Haveyourghostmodelmoveinandoutoftheframe,ormovearoundinsome<br />
waytocreatetheghostlyefect.Thistechniquewilgivetheefectof“seeing<br />
throughthem”becausetheexposurecontinuesafterthey’vemovedthroughor<br />
outofthescene.
Werecommendexperimentingwiththistechnique.Howmuchtimeyouleave<br />
theshuteropen,andhowlongyourghoststandsstilbeforemovingwilefect<br />
theendresult.<br />
Fortheimageabove,themanmovedhisheadforabriefamountoftime,then<br />
returnedtotheoriginalpositionfortheremainderoftheexposure.Thesekinds<br />
ofshotsarebestdoneinlowlightwhereyouareabletosetaoneminuteor<br />
longerexposure.Youwon’tbeabletoachievethisefectwithashortexposure<br />
astheydon’talowsufficienttimeforthesubjecttomoveinandoutofthe<br />
originalsceneorpose.<br />

wantyourpettobetheonlysubjecttheviewer’seyeisdrawntowards.
Whenshootingindoors,pickashootinglocationwithabrightwindow&<br />
indirectlight.Ensurethewindowlightisevenwiththeirentirebody.<br />
Whenshootingoutdoors,photographonalightlybrightovercastdayorinthe<br />
shade.

BlurryPhotographs<br />
Thereisnothingworsethanunwantedblurinyourphotographs.Ifyourgoal<br />
thisyearistolessenyournumberofbluryshots,youfirstneedtounderstand<br />
whatcausesthem.<br />
Beforewestart,it’simportanttounderstandthatimagesafectedbyfog,<br />
morningmist,smoke,orhaze,arenotbluryshots.Theyaresimplyanaturaly<br />
hazyimage.Thereisnothingyoucandoaboutnaturalelementslikethesethat<br />
arecausingyourimagestolooknotassharpasusual,otherthantoshootata<br />
diferenttimewhentheweatherisclearer.<br />
Therearethreebasickindsofblurknowntophotographers.Outoffocus,<br />
camerashakeandmotionblur.<br />
Theterm ‘Outoffocusblur‘referstonaturalblurcreatedbyyourlens’optics.<br />
Whenthebluriscausedbyshake,weusetheterm ‘camerashake.’Whenit’s<br />
causedbythesubjectmoving,weusetheterm ‘motionblur.’
‘Outoffocus’blurusualyisn’tabadthing,youjustneedtolearnhowto<br />
controlit.Havealookatthisexamplebelow.Themainsubjectissharp<br />
(cupcakeatthefront)andthebackgroundhas‘outoffocus’blur.<br />
Manygreatphotoshave‘outoffocus’blur.Theonlytimethiskindofbluris<br />
bad,iswhenitisunintenional.Forexample,ifthephotographerwantedal<br />
threecakesinfocus,thenthe‘outoffocus’blurisbad.<br />
Ifyouareseeingtoomuchblurforyourliking,yousimplyneedtoincreaseyour<br />
aperturef/numberand/ortakeonestepbackfrom thesubject.Sometimesit<br />
canbeduetothephotographerstandingsoclosetothesubjectthatthelens<br />
can’tfocusproperly.Oritcouldbethatyouarenotfocusingcorectlyonthe<br />
mainsubject.Ifyouthinkit’safocusproblem andusualyusemanualfocus,try<br />
AUTOfocusingandseeiftheproblem stilexists.Wealsorecommendsingle<br />
pointfocusing,placingasinglefocalpointoverthemainsubject.Thisis<br />
coveredinourDSLRPhotographyCourse.
Camerashakeisobviouslycreatedwhenwhateverisholdingthecamerais<br />
moving.Whetherthatbeaphotographershands,oratripodthatisgently<br />
movingwiththewindandsoforth.Whenyou’rehandholdingthecamera,there<br />
wilcomeacertainshuterspeedwhereyourbodymovementwilcausethe<br />
cameratoshake.Everyoneisdiferent.PersonalyIfindIcanhandholdawide<br />
angleshotat1/40thofasecond.Anyslower,andit’lresultinagoodnumber<br />
ofbluredimages.<br />
Toavoidcamerashake,youneedafastershuterspeedthanthelengthofyour<br />
lens.Forexample,ifyouareusinga70mm focallength,thenyourshuter<br />
speedshouldbefasterthan1/70thofasecond.Ifyourfocallengthis200mm<br />
thenyourshuterspeedneedstobefasterthan1/200secwhenhandholding<br />
andsoforth.<br />
Note,theimagebelowisblurybecausethephotographerhandheldtheshot<br />
withthefocallengthat50mm andtheshuterspeedwassettoonly1/10th<br />
sec.
Motionblur,istheresultoftheshuterspeednotbeingfastenoughtocapturea<br />
movingsubjectinaninstant(presumingthiswasyourintention).Many<br />
photographersusemotionblurasanartisticform ofimagery.Howeverifthe<br />
motionbluryouseeinyourimagesareunintentional,thenit’saproblem.The<br />
goodnewsis,alyouneedtodoissetafastershuterspeed.<br />
Ifyouhavemovingsubjectsinyourimagesthatlooklikebluryblobs,anditwas<br />
unintentional,youneedtosetafastershuterspeed.Youcandothisbyeither<br />
setingaloweraperturef/number,orusingahigherISO.Themoreexperienced<br />
youbecomeasaphotographer,theeasieritwilbetoautomaticalyknowwhat<br />
shuterspeedisrequiredfordiferentsituations.
OTHERCAUSESOFBLUR<br />
Asidefrom thethreemaintypesofblurinphotography,thereareotherthings<br />
thatcancauseblurinyourshots.Forexample,dirtygearcausedbydust,<br />
fingerprints,sunburncreams,mouldetc.Beforeeachphotoshoot,cleanyour<br />
gear.Intheveryleast,wipeyourlenswithasoftlenscloth.
It’salsoimportanttounderstandthatanoisyand/orpixelatedimageisn’tblur.<br />
Althoughitmaylooklikeblurbecausethepixelsoverlapeachother.I’vehad<br />
manybeginnersaskme‘whyismyimageblury’?Usualywhattheyrealymean<br />
is,‘whyisn’titsharp’?Thiskindoflossofsharpnessinanimageisoftendueto<br />
yourISOsetingbeingpushedveryhigh.<br />
BeforepushingyourISOsohighly,firstaskyourself,ismyaperturethelowest<br />
f/numberIcanpossiblygo,yetstilbehappywiththedepthoffield?Onceyou<br />
havealowf/number,thenincreaseyourISOuntilyouhaveafastenough<br />
shuterspeedforyourneeds.Ofcoursetherewilbetimeswhenyouhaveno<br />
otherchoicebuttoincreaseyourISOandhaveanimagethatislesssharp.<br />
Thatisperfectlyfine.It’sbetertogettheshot,thannotgetitatal.Justknow,<br />
thatgrainyimagesarenotbluryphotos,butratheraresultofahighISO<br />
seting.

andmacrophotographersoutthere.Herflowerandmacroworkisabsolutely<br />

festivalheldhereinAustraliacaled‘HeadOn’thatIfoloweachyear.IfSam<br />
weretosubmitherportraitworktothisfestivalsometimeinthenearfuture,Ican<br />
seethem doingverywel.HerimageshavethatgrityAustralianfeelaboutthem<br />
thatoftenwinsuchcompetitions.
Howdidyoufirstbecomeinterestedinphotography?<br />
Ihavebeeninterestedinphotographyforyears.Igrewupinafamilythatalways<br />
tookphotos.Ihavetakenphotosformanyyearsbutneverrealylearned<br />
photography.IwasalwaystoldIhad“goodframingofmyshots”.Mypartner<br />
purchasedmeacanon7dmarkI.HetoldmeIwasgoodatphotographyand<br />
maybenowIhadanicecameraitwastimetolearnthewayIwantedtouseit.I<br />
wasstrugglingwithmanualmodeuntilafriendputmeontoyourcourse.OnceI<br />
gotthebasicsfrom thecourseofhowtomanagemanualmode,Ihavenotgone<br />
backtoautosince.
Whatorwhoinspiresyou?<br />
Natureinspiresme.OtherphotographersinthestudentFBgroupandfriends<br />
inspireme.Childrenlostintheirownlitleworldplaying,somanythingsthatI<br />
getinspirationfrom.Ilovewalkingwithmycameraandgetinglostinamoment,<br />
betweenmeandwhateverorwhoeverIam shooting,thatothersdon’tsee.<br />
Whetherit’samomentwithabugthatnooneelseevensaw,orcapturingachild<br />
playing,lostintheirownworld.It’sjustthatmoment,thejoyofthecaptureand<br />
sharingitwithothers.Thesmileaparentgivesyouwhenyoucapturedoneof<br />
theirkidsjustbeingthemselves.
Howhasourphotographycoursehelpedyou?<br />
Thecoursetaughtmemanualmode.Itgavemeverysimplesteps(cheatsheets<br />
onmyphone)thatIcouldfolowtostartmeonthejourneytolearningmy<br />
camera,inthewayIwantedbuthadstruggledwith.Ihadbeentryingtodo<br />
manualmodebutfailingtounderstandpeoplesexplanations.Italseemedso<br />
complex.Thelessonsshowedmeonebutonatatimehowtousemycamerato<br />
itsfulpotentialandalowmetocaltheshots,notletmycameradowhatit<br />
thoughtwasbestforme.LearninghowtochangemyfocuspointstowhereI<br />
wantedwasoneofmyfavouriteandmostimportantthingsIlearnt.Something<br />
sosimple,yetitmadeahugediferencetome.Ididtrytogobacktoautoone<br />
dayjusttosee,whenIlookedatthefirstshotIcouldn’tdoit.Ialmost<br />
immediatelywentbacktomanualasIdidn'tlikethewaymycamerahad<br />
balancedthecoloursinmyshot,oritschosenfocuspoint.Igetalotmore<br />
keepersnowthanIusedto.Yes,IstilscrewupmysetingswhenIchange<br />
locations,whatIam shooting,orswitchlenses,butInowrealisefasterand<br />
knowhowtofixit.
What’syourmostmemorablemoment?<br />
Mostmemorablemomentwasmyfirstmanualmacroshot.Itwasabeeatthe<br />
botanicgardens,it’soneoftheprintswehaveathomeonourwal.Iwasso<br />
excitedandproudofthatshot.Igothomeandremembersayingtomypartner<br />
lookwhatIdid!Look!<br />
Mostrecentlywasashotoftwohoverfliesmidflight,andbeingaskedbyTanya<br />
toanswerthesequestionsforthemagazine.HonestlynotsomethingIever<br />
thoughtIwouldbedoing.

MyfavouritelocationisthebotanicgardensatMountCoothaformacro<br />
photography,orathomewanderingaroundmyowngardenlookingforbugs.
Whatplansdoyouhaveforthefutureofyourphotography?<br />
Myfutureplansformyphotographyisahardquestion.Iwouldliketoselmy<br />
work,althoughIam stilverycriticalofit.Istoppedpostinginthegroup(asa<br />
lotofusdo)becauseIcomparemyselftootherpeople.Iseemanyamazing<br />
photographers.Istareattheirworkandthink‘wow’IwishIcoulddothat.<br />
LatelyIstartedtobelieveIcan.IhavebeentoldIseethingsdiferentlyto<br />
others,byfriendsandotherphotographersIhavebeenoutwith.AtfirstI<br />
wasn’tsosurethiswasagoodthing,nowIthinkitis.Ifwealshotthesame<br />
way,thatwouldbeveryboring.Ihavebeentalkingtosomeofthelocalshops<br />
intheareaaboutselingmywork.Iam notsurethatanythingwilcomeofit<br />
yet.Havingtheconfidencetoatleastaskthem andshowmyphotostothem<br />
wasabigstepforme.
What’syourbestpieceofadviceforotherssofar?<br />
Mybestadviceistodoityourway,shootwhatmakesyouhappy.Don'tcompare<br />
yourselftoothers,learnofthem,butbekindtoyourselfanddon’tgiveup.We<br />
alhavedayswherewedonotknowwhywebothered.Thosedayswherewegot<br />
itwrongandnotoneshotseemedtoworkthewaywewanted.Wealloseour<br />
mojoandinspirationatsomepoint.Keepshooting.Keeptrying.Playwithit,and<br />
ifitdoesn’twork,welnoonehastoknowbutyou.Anexperimentisnota<br />
failure,it’slearning,sokeeplearningandhavefun.<br />
