itsmovement.Thereforeit’spersonalpreferencewhetheryouwanttouse<br />

fastershuterspeedthanthefocallengthofyourlens.Forexampleifyou<br />

Ifyourlenshasvibrationcontrol/imagestabilisation,youcangetaway<br />

manydiferentgenresincludingportraits,food,stillife,productshotsand<br />
studiowork.

FirstlyIrecommendinvestinginapieceofdarkseamlessbackground.Itcanbe<br />

Withimprovementstoautofocusovertheyears,manycameracompaniesarestartingto<br />
takeawaytheinfinitystops.Ifyoudon’tseeaninfinitysymbolwhenyouturnthefocus<br />
ringonyourlens,chancesareitmaynothaveone.Inthiscaseyou’lneedtokeepyour<br />

HarshLighting<br />
Howtoshootamazingimagesinharshlighting<br />
WhenyoufirststartusingyourD<strong>SLR</strong>camera,youlearnthatdawnandduskare<br />
primelightingconditionsforphotography.Howeverthatdoesn’tmeanyou<br />
shouldputyourcameraawayinthemiddleoftheday.Doneright,youcan<br />
actualytakeamazinghighcontrastphotosinharshlight.
ExposureSetingsForHarshLight<br />
Thesecrettoshootinginharshlighting,istoshootmanualmodeand<br />
under-exposeyourshots.Doingthiswildarkentheshadows,leavingthe<br />
brighterareasbeterexposed.Nodoubtyou’vetakenanimageinthemiddle<br />
ofthedaywherethebackgroundandsuroundingslookgreat,yetpeople’s<br />
facesorwhiteclothingarewashedout.Whenunder-exposinganimage,<br />
expectshadowstobemuchdarkerandmoredramatic.Inmanycases,ifyou<br />
weretozeroyourexposureline,everythingwouldbebrighter,andoveralit<br />
wouldlookwashedoutandmundane.However,theadvantageofD<strong>SLR</strong><br />
camerasisthattheyalowyoutobemorecreativewithyourimagery.
FindingAGoodLocation<br />
Fordramaticresults,lookforplacesthathavenaturalshadows/shade,<br />
whereharshdaylightsunisalsostreamingacrossthescene.Theexposure<br />
shouldbereducedenoughsothatyoucanseedetailsintheharsherlit<br />
areasofthescene.Irecommendtryingdiferentexposuresuntilyougetthe<br />
creativelookyouareafter.Don’tworyifyourfirstatemptsaren’tperfect,<br />
themoreyoupracticethistechniquethebeteryou’lbecome.
MakeGoodUseOfBacklighting<br />
Lookforsituationswhereyoursubjectisbeautifulylitfrom behindandyou<br />
