Kremer III, Editor It wasn’t quite Valentine’s Day yet, but there was plenty of love in the air and on the lanes at Thunder Bowl in Mokena Saturday, Feb. 9, for Mokena Community Park District’s annual Mother Son Bowl. While the music was blasting and the bumpers were bumping, around two dozen mothers and sons showed up for the event, which included unlimited bowling for two hours, a pizza lunch, Valentine’s Day cookies that the families could decorate themselves and cupcakes. Many of the bowlers were regular attendees of the annual event, though some of those have aged out of the program — geared toward children between 5 and 12 years old — which left room for some new families to take part in the fun. “We have a lot of new faces, which is really cool,” said MCPD’s special events planner Rebecca Phetteplace. All throughout the are reserved for the mothers and sons were brightly colored decorations of heart shaped balloons, in the spirit of a mother’s love for her son. Even the competition of the bowling couldn’t overshadow the love, though some children were certain they were better bowlers than their mothers. One of those, 6-year-old Tyler Thorns, emphatically answered, “I am!” when asked who the better bowler was. But his mother, Jenny Thorns, didn’t seem to mind letting her son have the braggin rights. “We came to this last year, so we had a lot of fun and decided to come back again for another time,” Jenny said. When asked about his favorite part of the day, Tyler initially cited the bowling but then quickly remembered the pizza and cupcakes that were due after. Echoing the sentiment was Amy Ambrose and her son Henry, Brightly colored decorations adorn Thunder Bowl in Mokena for Mother Son Bowl. who — surprise, surprise — also claimed to be the better bowler. “This is our third year doing this,” Amy said. “We love all the stuff the park district does for me and Henry, my husband and my daughter. It’s just a lot of fun.” And the duo said they plan to be back for a fourth year next year. “For sure. This is our nice little date time,” Amy said. One mother-son duo even made a trip over from neighboring Tinley Park to enjoy in the festivities. Raquel Guvea and her son 10-year-old Gabriel were spotted getting their picture taken by Phetteplace. Raquel said her favorite part of the day was just being able to spend time with Gabriel. “Tinley doesn’t have something like this for the mothers and sons,” she said. As for Gabriel, he said his favorite part of the day was the food. And, when asked who the better bowler is, Gabriel gave it some deep thought before humbly answering, “Everyone.” MCPD’s next event is scheduled to be the Daddy Daughter Ball, formerly known as the Princess Ball, on March 16.
