PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018<br />

Hi everyone<br />

It seems like only a few weeks ago that I wrote my report for the last News<strong>letter</strong> before<br />

Christmas and what has changed? Well, the weather for one thing with the whole country<br />

enjoying or suffering from the heat wave generated by hot weather flying across the Tasman from<br />

Australia.<br />

Many local rivers in Hawkes Bay are almost dry in places and the same is happening I<br />

understand in the South Island with some big fish being caught. All this time the trusty Tongariro<br />

continues to flow, albeit at a slower pace, into Lake Taupo and there is plenty of fishing in other<br />

lakes and smaller streams in our region. What a wonderful place to have a facility such as ours!!<br />

As I have mentioned before we developed our TALTAC Operating Plan in 2016 in an effort to<br />

provide the committee with hard facts and figures upon which we could make short and long<br />

term decisions for the betterment (and continued existence) of the club for our 500+ members<br />

from NZ and overseas. A huge amount of work went into it from several committee members<br />

and it is an excellent Plan by anyone’s standards. One of the outstanding facts is that apart<br />

from the peak months of August, September and October (when it is 84-90%) cabin utilisation<br />

is less than 50% and in the summer months it is well down on that. Even April and May bednight<br />

occupancy can be as low as 20-30%. In other words the club is largely unoccupied for<br />

several months of the year and does not generate income. In the meantime costs are increasing,<br />

maintenance work still has to be done (although we believe we have finished of our major<br />

projects on the cottage, re-roofing part of the lodge, upgrading showers, replacing some wall<br />

cladding on the lodge and most recently painting a fair proportion of the lodge and cottage).<br />

How do we overcome that problem? Enrol new members? Increase annual subs? Increase<br />

accommodation fees? Encourage more members to bring their families to the club in the quieter<br />

times?<br />

We have money in the bank but some of that needs to be retained “for a rainy day” or rather a<br />

“disastrous day” to cover insurance excesses should we be badly affected by a natural disaster<br />

and also as a reserve for any major works we suddenly have to do.<br />

As you know from my previous reports your committee is working on a plan to bring more<br />

people to the club in the quiet times and many of you have agreed with me that the provision of<br />

a storage building for bikes (especially) would encourage them to come more frequently in the<br />

summer with their families. I know some of you disagree but times have changed and we have<br />

to look to the future to both grow our membership and increase our income without increasing<br />

subs and accommodation fees. We’re still working on that and looking for the best deal.<br />

I would like the thank Mary for the sterling work she has done yet again over the last twelve<br />

months. Mary, you are an amazing person as the manager of the club, your knowledge of<br />

members is second to none and you are great to work with as President.<br />

Along with Mary the committee members use their own skills in helping to run the club and you<br />

should all be very grateful for the work they do. Let’s also thank Helen Swetman and Ian Merson<br />

for their continued great work and Jim Allison who does so many things around the club that<br />

most of us don’t know about. We will have a special way of thanking Russell Bee at our AGM<br />

later this month.<br />

Finally thanks to Michael Cheyne and John Billing our Honorary Accountant and Reviewer who<br />

do such a good job on our accounts each year. John sent me an email today in part saying the<br />

following:<br />

“I have just completed my review of the 2018 accounts. Mary and Michael have done a fine job<br />

once again and everything is very much in order. Very few organisations would have their annual<br />

accounts prepared and reviewed within a month of the end of the financial year”.<br />

The Annual General Meeting of the Tongariro and Lake Taupo Anglers Club will be held in the<br />

Clubrooms, Koura Street, Turangi, on Saturday, 23rd February <strong>2019</strong> at 5.30 p.m. followed by a<br />

barbecue meal.<br />

AGM FISHING COMPETITION –<br />

There are prizes for the heaviest brown and the heaviest rainbow as well as the average weight<br />

caught in the Taupo fishery.<br />

The competition will commence at 5:00 am on Friday.<br />

Weigh-in times are flexible as long as there is a club member present to witness your catch.<br />

Weigh-in will cease at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.<br />

You must have a current Taupo fishing license and observe the Taupo Regulations.<br />

The Club will put on a barbecue dinner following the AGM on Saturday and all Club members<br />

and their families are invited to come along and join in the fun. Refreshments will be available.<br />

John Billing's, Reviewer, report to the Tongariro and Lake Taupo Anglers<br />

Club Incorporated.<br />

I have reviewed the financial statements on pages 2 to 5 of the Tongariro &<br />

Lake Taupo Anglers Club Incorporated for the year ended 31 December<br />

2018 in accordance with the Review Engagement Standards issued by the<br />

Institute of Chartered Accountants of New Zealand.<br />

A review is primarily limited to enquiries of club personnel and analytical<br />

review procedures applied to financial data and thus provides less<br />

assurance than an audit. I have not performed an audit and, accordingly, I<br />

do not express an audit opinion.<br />

Based on my review, nothing has come to my attention that causes me to<br />

believe that the accompanying financial statements which have been<br />

prepared using the historical cost method modified by the revaluation of<br />

certain assets do not give a true and fair view.<br />
