‘‘ 

he time has come to build one”, said the officials of The 

TDepartment of Science and Technology (DST) about the 

development of the Indian quantum computers. Quantum 

computing, in its current fifth generation, has emerged as a new trend in 

computing and has proven to be more proficient over conventional 

computing. Observing international entities, the Australian government has 

announced AUD$25 million investment and the European Commission 

Support investing $1.13 billion for quantum projects. This raises the 

question, where does India stand in the race of quantum computing? 

Our nation is attempting to take significant steps in quantum computing 

technology. DST has already funded the projects to develop the quantum 

computers. The physics departments at Indian Institute of Science, 

Bangalore and Harish Chandra Research Institute, Allahabad are not far 

behind and have also paved their way into the theoretical aspects of 

quantum computing. 

Is India Ready 

for Quantum 

Computing? 

Critics label the limitations on the existing systems and the R&D sector of 

the country saying that the Indian quantum computers are years away and 

the current systems only solve the little problems. However, various causes 

fall under the advantageous category of our nation. India has been home to 

names in quantum computing like Raman Research Institute (RRI), DST 

etc. that are conducting innovative research in quantum communication, 

quantum computing, and quantum optics. Furthermore, the Indian 

government has shown massive support in quantum computing setting up 

initiatives like Quantum Information Science & Technology (QuST). The 

aim of these initiatives is to revolutionize future computation and 

communication systems. The government has introduced these 

propositions from noted academicians and experts of the quantum 

technologies. 

To remain ahead of the quantum computing course, our nation can set up a 

roadmap comprising groups of academicians, industry representatives, and 

the end users. Being a home to the broad interest groups, one group 

comprising academicians and theoretical computer scientists should work 

in close collaboration. To inspire the young generation, our nation can set 

up a strong value of fellowships encouraging more postdoctoral and 

doctoral research works. Additionally, more workshops and conferences 

can be held to promote quantum computing. The benefits will roll in the 

form of further drug discovery, weather predictions, logistical planning,

In the society that we live in there is often a stigma 

attached with the concept of visiting a 

psychologist. People often hesitate in consulting a 

therapist and if out of sheer necessity they do consult a 

psychologist, the fact is considered as disgraceful. 

What is surprising is that these same people can very 

well be mildly hypochondriacs, rushing to a doctor's 

clinic or hospital to ensure that nothing is wrong with 

their physical health. But when it comes to mental 

health, the need to visit a specialist evaporates. 

While western civilizations may have overdone it with 

people having multiple therapists to resolve different 

problems, Indians are still struggling with the fact that a 

psychological counseling is important too. We Indians 

are comfortable in our understanding of mind and 

continue to believe that any emotional support required 

can be given by the network of friends and family. 

Who needs a Psychologist? 

This blatant ignorance and even avoidance of the topic 

has led to worsening of problem. Recent research 

suggests that mental illnesses and anxiety are major 

contributors to adoption of smoking and drinking habits 

among youth. Clinical depression, mood swings and 

suicidal tendencies are increasing in adolescents due to 

undiagnosed psychological conditions. 

But unfortunately, parents are often the last ones to 

realize that their child may need psychological 

attention. Worse, parents often 

remain in denial that something

Established in 1996, the Model 

Institute of Engineering and 

Technology (MIET) is the 

first private engineering institute in the 

state of J&K. It is ranked in top 100

The Tech-Savvy Director 

Besides being a Professor in the 

Department of Computer Science and 

Engineering, Professor Ankur Gupta 

is also the Director of MIET. Prior to

zettabytes (ZB) or around 1.8 trillion 

gigabytes (GB), of digital information was 

created in the year 2011. The amount of data in 

2012 was approximately 2.8 ZB and is expected 

to rise to 40 ZB by the year 2020. There is a 

specific need for data centers to be created that 

can not only store large information but which 

can store it more efficiently, safely, securely and 

confidentially. These data centers need to be on 

the front on storing, processing, managing and 

disseminating of the data. Forthcoming 

technologies like Cloud are giving tough 

competition to these centers. 

Purpose 

The terms, data center and cloud based data 

centers may be confusing at times, but the only 

common thing between them is that they store 

the data. The main difference lies in their 

physical working location. A company can have 

an in-house data center or can store data in other 

geographical location, whereas cloud stores

information online. There is a physical need for storing electrical equipment in the centre. They also have to back up 

the data which require more storage units. Cloud on the other hand is online and becomes operational just after a 

quick registration. 

Restraints 

The cloud can offer unlimited storage but lacks certain security reasons. It can be upgraded and extended with ease. 

On the other hand, in-house data centers have limited capacities. To increase it, the company has to invest in new 

equipments and infrastructure; furthermore it occupies additional space and requires dedicated manpower to maintain 

it. In addition to that, in-house data centres needs utmost care as they have to be cooled down to reduce the heat 

generated by the equipment. This heat can cause the units to malfunction. Such incidents affect the company’s data 

and costs. In terms of energy, a simple data center may need only a few kilowatts of energy, but an enterprise-scale 

data center installation can demand tens of megawatts or more. Today, the green data center, are designed for 

minimum environmental impact. These data centers have to be constantly monitored, which takes a great deal of time 

and money but has its advantage in security. 

Benefits 

Cloud glistens in the eye of small businesses. It cost them less, provides affordable subscriptions and takes no time to 

build. In the digital world of 2018, cloud is essential platform for several companies. A quick registration and you are 

set. It takes no time to bring together its operation. The subscriptions are affordable and scalable from vendor to 

vendor. The in-house data centers take times to build. It cost the company millions of dollars. One of the main 

problems these centers face generally is the efficiency of equipment. The power and cooling systems often don’t 

work as they are supposed to be. The solution to such complications is to maintain the accuracy via accessing a 

real-time data source such as Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) and Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency (DCiE). 

Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) tools address these problems and simplify the process. (DCIM) 

tools are quickly becoming the solution of choice to control inefficiencies. As the saying goes “Money is Power”, 

here it applies “Power is Money”. 

Security 

An in-house data center is more secure than the cloud based. CCTVs and security personnel provide better 

management to these storage centers. Only authorized persons can access these records and therefore easy to identify 

the culprit in event of data theft. As these are physical local network, the safety protocols are repeatedly updated and 

help in transfer of data from one place to another, even to the third party businesses. Since the data center is a core 

business asset, comprehensive security measures, like badge access and video surveillance, helps in detecting and 

preventing malfeasance by employees, contractors and intruders. Cloud on the other hand, is external, remotely 

controlled site which is difficult to secure. It is vulnerable to cyber, malware and virus attacks. A simple breach can 

cause a whole lot of damage to data and the company. Numerous reports about such leaks have surfaced repetitively. 

Verdict 

Companies in need of dedicated system, space and control should opt for the in-house data centers. But to expand it, 

they will need to buy more equipment, staff, and electricity. New and small business, which wants less cost and can 

cope up with less control, cloud is best. According to the revenue increase rate reports, it is evident that enterprises 

are transferring to the cloud on a large scale. Companies are opting for both cloud based and in-house centers, 

allotting their data as per their needs. The remedy can be a hybrid solution comprising both storages. Google, 

Microsoft, and Cisco have already created hybrid solutions. Cloud is sure flexile but it’s not that perfect to fully adapt

Big data is BIG!” 

The interest in big data and learning analytics revealed 

itself in the responses I received to the tweet above that I 

sent earlier this year. On my way to a smart-learning 

conference in China and in an attempt at humor, I hit send 

on this tweet, and almost immediately, the likes and 

retweets started pouring in. This exchange illustrated the 

popularity of big data—and learning analytics—among my 

few and newly found followers. 

A quick Google search for images related to big data and 

learning analytics also illustrates the currency of these 

terms; the results page is a colorful myriad of infographic 

after infographic. The use of big data and learning analytics 

has the opportunity to transform the field of education. The 

same has been said about blackboards, filmstrips, overhead 

projectors, radio, television, and, yes, even computers. 

Education researchers have been conducting media studies 

for decades, comparing television instruction to teachers, 

teachers to computers, and most recently online instruction 

to face-to-face instruction. For the most part, the conclusion 

has been the same: When it comes to media impact on 

learning, there is no significant difference. In the everevolving 

world of technology, it’s imperative that education 

professionals stay conversant on the current trends. 

There’s a lot of data out there. Forbes magazine states that 

more data has been created in the past two years than in the 

entire history of the human race. Virtually everything we do 

in our modern society generates some form of data. We 

produce data on social media and networks. Scientific 

instruments collect all sorts of data. Mobile devices 

ubiquitously track all information, all the time. Sensor 

technologies and networks constantly measure an 

assortment of data. 

Data are collected through the Web through searches, game 

consoles, entertainment networks, e-commerce, purchases 

at department and grocery stores, bank and credit card 

transactions, social networks, and yes, even colleges and 

universities. 

Data in Education 

Student data generated through the education system can be 

sorted into two broad categories: institutional data and 

instructional data. Institutional data include admissions 

statistics (high school class rank, admissions test scores), 

instructional records (past grades, program information),

system and engagement (online discussions, content viewed, interaction with students and instructors, time spent 

online). Both categories of student-generated data can be processed via analytics. To harness this data and 

properly use it in teaching and learning, educators must understand learning analytics. 

Learning analytics focuses on students and their behaviors, with the primary audience being learners and 

instructors. Learning analytics support learning goals by targeting instructional, curricular, and support resources. 

EDUCAUSE, a nonprofit association dedicated to advancing higher education through information technology, 

defines learning analytics as “the use of data and models to predict student progress and performance, and the 

ability to act on that information.” 

Learning analytics has the potential to help answer the following questions: 

• What assessments (quizzes, tests) in a course are the most important predictors of a student’s success? 

• When is a student at risk of failing a course? 

• What prerequisite courses are most critical to a student’s success in a course? 

• When should a student receive tutoring or counseling? 

• How many times should a student access an online course during the week? 

• What are the not-to-be-missed activities in a course that predict student success or failure? 

Being able to answer these questions drives me to make my bold statement: Learning analytics is a true gamechanger. 

Online learning and improved processing power have provided an opportunity to gather and analyze 

student data like never before. 

Ethical Concerns 

There are, however, some ethical concerns, because using student data for learning analytics raises important 

issues about student data privacy and how colleges and universities use and share that data. In addition, how a 

college or university acts on these findings may come under scrutiny. What happens when learning algorithms go 

awry and unintentionally steer students in the wrong direction? What about students who do not “fit” into the 

algorithm? Will their academic future be jeopardized? As promising as learning analytics appears to be, it would 

be smart for colleges and universities to think deeper and create policies and procedures that prioritize students’ 

best interests. Numerous other concerns will surely arise as we make our learning analytics journey. 

Conclusion 

Will learning analytics transform education or will it find itself relegated to the dusty shelf with the audienceresponse 

systems—both underused and oversold? Time will tell. If I were a betting man, however, I would go allin 

on learning analytics because I believe it truly is a game-changer in the world of teaching and learning. 

And here is one final bold prediction: The ease with which we can gather data and analytics through online 

instruction and our ability to take action to support student learning may soon make online instruction superior to 

face-to-face instruction, at least until we discover how to collect such data in a face-to-face instructional

• The manufacturing giant Qualcomm recently unveiled its new Soc i.e. Snapdragon 855, which include the X50 5G 

modem to be used in 5G-enabled smartphones. Lenovo unveiled its Z5 pro GT to be the first smartphone powered 

by this monster processor. It will be the first phone with the 5G connectivity beating all the other competition in the 

market 

• Out of India, both the Verizon and AT&T have announced plans to launch smartphones with 5G. One Plus, LG are 

also developing their own phones 

• The luxury phone manufacturer Apple has put on hold its 5G phone manufacturing and is reported to launch 5Genabled 

devices in 2020 


The Current State 

In Hawaii, a demonstration by Verizon highlighting a 5G smartphone showed a 1Gb file 

download in just 17 seconds, which will even be more faster when the commercial 5G 

connectivity sets up. The non-standard specifications for 5G are the new radios, which 

covers 600 and 700 Mhz bands and 50 GHz millimeter wave end of the spectrum. These 

non-standard specifications apply to the 5G radios build in the base of LTE. With the LTE 

base, the new radios will play nicely with the areas having zero to none 5G connectivity 

and will shift to the 4G networks when needed. Earlier this June, 5G network operators fine 

tuned their software using the equipment complying with the full complete standards. 

The industry giants such as Qualcomm and Intel are working to incorporate 5G models in 

phones, car, and home automation. These new radios are in midst of testing in order to 

make sure they are interoperable with the network infrastructure and operators. 

Qualcomm’s newly introduced SD 855 can give a blazing download speed of 29 Gbps. 

Qualcomm has said to form partners with over twenty operators currently to roll out its 

5G-enabled processors and even around eighteen device manufacturers have already 

committed to using its technology. 

Where does Smartphone Manufacturers Stand? 

Now that the chipset makers and the network providers are all set, phone manufacturers are 

also bucking up in delivering the best of 5G devices. These devices are going to be special 

and a lot different from the current generation smartphones. However, the phones built 

today, even when the standards of 5G are completed, will not feature the 5G capabilities. 

In terms of big names, Apple has hold on to 2020 to roll out 5G devices and wait until the 

wireless carriers have worked out all the early testing in 2019. OnePlus has also aligned 

itself with the SD 855 processor and their next phone may feature 5G capabilities. Sprint 

and LG are doing the same. However, Motorola has been a step ahead with its Moto Mods 

in delivering 5G speeds. The phone manufacturer has announced 5G mods for Moto Z3 

and the 5G connectivity can be attached to the back of the phone. 

Beyond 5G 

Users have always been dreaming to take advantage of the new generation in every 

technology and now it is the time of 5G with its astonishing speed and automated features. 

The consequences will take place in terms of machines talking to each other in cars, houses 

seamlessly alongside reduced latency. Furthermore, 5G will be a household name in AR, 

VR and will mainstream these technologies for the users. 

This all seems too exciting, but there is a lot of work to do. Companies are testing the new 

radios to play nicely with the government and infrastructure norms. The year 2018

videos, etc. Students sometimes get 

lost in the sea of information and need 

help in analyzing and evaluating the

authenticity and validity of the content. 

The main challenge is the adoption of 

technology is to upskilling of the 

teaching staff. They need to learn new 

technical skills to be relevant. 

Whatever we have discussed till now 

have already been implemented in 

most of the developed countries, but 

the developing nations are still very 

far. 

The fourth industrial revolution has 

brought new technologies like Virtual 

Reality, Augmented Reality, Internet of 

Things (IoT), Machine learning, 

Artificial Intelligence, Blockchain, etc. 

Their technologies are going to 

completely transform the world and 

almost all the industries including

learning will reach a new height with 

the help of virtual reality and

apps already available for this. 

Machine Learning will help in 

personalizing the learning for 

individual student and redesigning the 

assessments. Artificial intelligence can 

help in tracking the mental steps which

explanations and intervention to
