Best of Luck to You 

Four-leafed clovers are popping up everywhere these days: drawn out with 

green sugar sprinkles on the top of cookies, on the crafts that young children 

bring home from preschool, and— yes— out in the garden. 

Despite the proliferation of those cheerful, green images, a 2016 study 

showed that the odds of finding an actual four-leaf clover is one in 5000. 

Those are some pretty rough statistics to live by if you’re hoping for a stroke 

of good luck to come your way! 

On the other hand, the German philosopher Max Weber introduced a more 

serious philosophy: lebenschancen. Lebenschancen suggests that our life is 

partially shaped by the circumstances that we are given. For example, someone 

who is born in a small beach town is more likely to learn how to surf 

as a young child than someone who is born and raised in the Midwest. Or, 

someone who is raised in a home where both parents hold a college degree is 

more likely to see college as an inevitability. 

Still, your story is not written for you. The choices that we make very well 

may be partially shaped by how we are raised and what we are told… but 

those circumstances are rarely insurmountable, and the things that we see 

as limitations can also be personal challenges. We, too, are able to give fresh 

life to our goals and plans. We are our own four-leaf clovers, plucked out of 

our own garden. 

Throughout this month, I hope that you will find the time to truly think on 

what would look like “good luck” to you as you glance back on your life a 

year from now. What would you tell someone about how you used your luck 

and your lebenschancen?

Phil’s BBQ Coming to Temecula 

San Diego-based Phil’s BBQ is coming to Temecula, 

replacing the TGI Fridays restaurant on 

Winchester Road. 

The chain, founded in 1998, is known for its 

mesquite grilled “beefy rib” dinners, baby back 

ribs and barbecued chicken. Fans of the San 

Diego Padres may know it for its concession 

in Petco Park. 

The Temecula restaurant, at 48030 Winchester 

Road, will be Phil’s 10th location and its first 

outside of San Diego County. 

Phil’s closed escrow on TGI Fridays 

6,342-square foot building in January, according 

to a news release. After a full remodel, it 

expects to open there by the end of the year. 

Temecula’s city government Facebook page 

posed a thank you TGI Fridays for 20 years for 

of doing business. The restaurant is at Promenade 

Temecula, next to the Karl Strauss Brewing 

Company. 

TGI Fridays is expected to open by the middle 

of this month, according to Christine Damko, 

Temecula’s economic development manager. 

The casual restaurant chain did not respond to 

phone or email requests for comment. It has 

more than 870 restaurants in 55 countries.

To enjoy the full majesty of the Antelope Valley Poppy Reserve, 

you have to visit it in the spring, when the valley 

bursts into a spectacle of bright colors and the typical seasonal 

show of the Mojave Desert grasslands. The mosaic 

of colors and fragrance changes from day to day and from 

year to year and lasts from mid-February to the end of May. 

There are 8 miles of trails in the park, and strolling along the 

rolling hills covered in wildflowers is a true delight. There are 

occasional benches, perfect for spotting lizards, meadow 

larks, or even a bobcat. The Jane S. Pinheiro Interpretive 

Center features wildlife and wildflower exhibits, a gallery of 

Jane Pinheiro’s botanical watercolors, an orientation video, 

and a gift shop.

Cabot’s Pueblo Museum is a house museum in Desert Hot 

Springs. A large, Hopi-style pueblo was built in the Pueblo 

revival style by homesteader and adventurer Cabot Abram 

Yerxa in the early 20th century. The four-story 5,000-squarefoot 

house was entirely hand-made from found and reclaimed 

objects and has 35 rooms, 65 doors, and 150 windows. 

The house museum is a fascinating portrait of the 

life adventures of Cabot Yerxa and his family. The museum 

includes many household artifacts collected during their 

adventures through the Dakota Territory, Mexico, Alaska, 

Cuba, France, California, and the Southwest. There are also 

many artworks from Alaska Native and Native American cultures 

as well as curious memorabilia of desert homesteaders’ 

life.

Coronado is a historic resort city on a peninsula in San Diego 

Bay. The city’s oldest landmark is the 1888 grand Victorian 

Hotel del Coronado. The magnificent hotel is located 

just across from Coronado Beach, which is popular with 

surfers and sunbathers. On the western end of the beach is 

the leash-free Coronado Dog Beach. The Coronado Ferry 

Landing is a lively area with shops and restaurants. Centennial 

Park offers spectacular views of the San Diego skyline.

Ron Roberts, Former Temecula Mayor Dies 

Ron Roberts, who served on the Temecula 

City Council for 24 years, died Monday, Feb. 4, 

according to City Manager Aaron Adams. 

Supporters credit Roberts with helping revitalize 

Old Town Temecula, create Duck Pond 

Park and build the library that now bears his 

name. 

He was first appointed to the Temecula Traffic 

Commission in 1990 — the year after the city 

incorporated — then was elected to the City 

Council five consecutive times, from 1992 to 

2014. That included five terms as mayor. 

He served on a variety of regional transportation 

boards and was chairman of the National 

League of Cities Transportation Infrastructure 

& Services Committee, president of Southern 

California Association of Governments, and 

Metrolink board chairman. 

State Sen. Jeff Stone, who was elected to the 

City Council the same year as Roberts, hired 

his former colleague when Stone was on the 

Riverside County Board of Supervisors. 

“His experience as a retired California High 

Patrol officer, and his expertise in all areas of 

transportation, proved invaluable,” Stone said 

in a written statement Wednesday, Feb. 6.

Disney Will Celebrate ‘The 

Lion King’ at Disneyland’s 

California Adventure This 

Summer 

While crowds are expected to mob Disneyland 

this summer for the opening of Star Wars: 

Galaxy’s Edge, Disney resort executives don’t 

want you to forget about their other Anaheim 

park across the plaza, especially since some annual 

passholders who would otherwise head to 

Disneyland will be blocked out under the new 

two-park system. 

Disney has just announced that it will hold a 

“vibrant celebration inspired by Disney’s ‘The 

Lion King’” at Disney California Adventure 

just in time to tie into new “The Lion King” 

movie that is scheduled to be released to theaters 

on July 19, directed by Jon Favreau. 

According to the Disney Parks blog post, the 

event at DCA will include music, crafts and 

more “honoring the spirit of Africa.” 

It’s not secret that 1994 “The Lion King” was 

one of the most successful Disney movies of all 

time, spawning a variety of sequels and even 

a hugely popular Broadway show that’s played 

nearly everywhere. And, since the new “Lion 

King” movie is being directed by Jon Favreau, 

whose 2016 “Jungle Book” grossed nearly $1 

billion, it will be interesting to see what happens.

Irish Sausage Coddle 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 pound pork sausage links 

1/2 pound smoked bacon, cubed 

2 onions, thinly sliced 

3 carrots, chopped 

4 large potatoes, peeled and sliced 

Salt and ground black pepper to taste 

1 teaspoon dried parsley (optional) 

1 cup beef stock 

1 1/2 cups Irish stout beer (such as 

Guinness(R)) 

1/2 cup heavy cream 

DIRECTIONS: 

Preheat oven to 325 

Place sausages/bacon into a large skillet over 

medium heat, and cook until the sausages are 

browned on both sides, about 10 minutes. Slice 

the sausages into large chunks, and set the sausage 

and bacon aside. 

Place a layer of 1/3 of the onions in a 9x13-inch 

baking dish, followed by a layer of 1/3 of the carrots 

and sliced potatoes. Arrange 1/3 of sausage 

and bacon in a layer over the potatoes; sprinkle 

with salt, pepper, and parsley. Repeat layers 

twice more. Warm the beef stock in a saucepan 

over medium heat, and pour in the stout beer 

and cream. Pour the sauce over the casserole, 

and let the sauce fill in the spaces in the layers. 

Bake in the preheated oven until the potatoes 

and vegetables are tender, about 1 1/2 hours.
