MAN AND THE SEA<br />
Balbo’s tower. Aphrodite’s myth. Atlantic’s legend.<br />
Montecristo’s treasure.<br />
These four elements characterise a journey of<br />
exploration and discovery. As the poet Fernando Pessoa<br />
wrote, “Travel is the traveler”.<br />
The journey begins at Punta Ala, at the 16 th century<br />
fortification commissioned by Cosimo I de’ Medici in<br />
1562 to defend the coast of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.<br />
The House of Lorraine modified it in 1788, giving it<br />
the appearance of a castle. In the following century,<br />
it became a private home and in 1932 it became the<br />
residence of the hero of the skies, Italo Balbo, who used<br />
to land in this bay with his seaplane, and who rested in the<br />
castle protected by his guards who would be stationed<br />
at the great arched opening of the tower to keep watch<br />
of the horizon. It is a property that was salvaged by Gino<br />
Pasotti, who has patiently reconstructed the interior and<br />
exterior, respecting the estate’s original design.<br />
The new chapter of the STEFANO RICCI lookbook<br />
series was born here. Dedicated to Man and The Sea,<br />
the relationship immortalised by Charles Baudelaire’s<br />
poem when he composed “Free man, you will always<br />
cherish the sea!”.<br />
Tuscany’s sea was the birthplace of Aphrodite. In fact,<br />
according to legend, when the Greek goddess emerged<br />
from the Tyrrhenian Sea for an amorous encounter with<br />
Eros she realised that her necklace had broken.<br />
At a certain point seven pearls slid into the salty sea<br />
yet, instead of sinking, they transmuted into flowering<br />
islands. These are now the seven wonders of the<br />
Tuscan sea: Capraia, Elba, Giannutri, Giglio, Gorgona,<br />
Montecristo, Pianosa.

Aphrodite, asymptote of beauty, had a naturally fertile<br />
instinct. The Greeks exalted the goddess by identifying<br />
her in the foam of the sea, and a cult was born between<br />
Cyprus and Corinth that quickly won over Sicily,<br />
seducing the heart of the Roman Empire and assuming<br />
the name of Venus. Idol of love that united both gods<br />
and mortals, venerated as verdant divine, goddess of the<br />
sea and guardian of warriors. In the art of beauty, Sandro<br />
Botticelli dedicated the Birth of Venus to her, a painting<br />
that now resides at the Uffizi Gallery.<br />
Inspired by her legend, the route introducing the Spring/<br />
Summer 2019 Collection is a voyage onboard the<br />
Atlantic, a schooner launched in 1903. Commissioned<br />
by Wilson Marshall, New York Yacht Club member and<br />
shipowner, and designed by William Gardner, within<br />
a few months the Atlantic became one of the most<br />
admired vessels in the world, with a cruising speed<br />
of 20 knots, a mahogany interior and electric fittings,<br />
known for the impeccable service of its original 39 crew<br />
members.<br />
Brenton Reef and Cape May Cup were the first victories<br />
for the three masted schooner. Yet nothing compared to<br />
the triumph of the transatlantic voyage that linked Sandy<br />
Hook (New Jersey) to Lizard Light (Cornwall). In fact, in<br />
1905 the three-time winner of America’s cup Captain<br />
Charlie Barr assumed the command of Atlantic, taking<br />
the schooner beyond the limits of his victories: 3006<br />
nautical miles covered in 12 days, 4 hours, 1 minute<br />
and 19 seconds. 341 miles were surpassed in one day.<br />
This remained an uninterrupted world record until 1998.<br />
It was a legendary story, which saw the schooner navigate<br />
between the two world wars: it was rebaptised in 1917<br />
as USS Atlantic II, and was used for anti-submarine<br />
sightings off the coast of Virginia. In the 1940s it was<br />
used as a vessel for the Coast Guard, after Gerald<br />
Lambert (who succeeded Cornelius Vanderbilt III as<br />
shipowner) donated it to the United States. Abandoned<br />
in 1947, and broken piece by piece into oblivion, it was<br />
fully dismantled in 1982. Only Ed Kastelein’s passion<br />
made the rebirth possible (with three years of historical<br />
and technical research, and another seven years of<br />
work), until the launch that returned the legend.<br />
And it is on board of the Atlantic that the<br />
STEFANO RICCI man ventures, and conquers the<br />
beautiful and impenetrable Montecristo. It is the island<br />
of Saint Mamilian of Palermo, the holy bishop who<br />
killed the guardian dragon protecting the rocky terrain<br />
before becoming a hermit of Mons Christi. The land
was later immortalised by Alexandre Dumas’ novel<br />
The Count of Monte Cristo.<br />
It is enough to be immersed in the romanticised<br />
literature to feel the lapping water that cradled the three<br />
masted ship of the young Edmond Dantès, or to imagine<br />
the glittering Eagle that was transformed into an imperial<br />
symbol at the dawn of the nineteenth century. “The<br />
morning’s sun rose clear and resplendent, touching the<br />
foamy waves into a network of ruby-tinted light.” wrote<br />
Dumas before gifting humanity with the story of Abbé<br />
Faria, a gothic character with invisible ink, custodian to<br />
a secret treasure that seduced time in the search for the<br />
“twentieth rock starting from the little creek eastwards<br />
in a straight line”.Man assimilates the privilege of a<br />
territory of conscious success.<br />
“[He] had often passed it, situated twenty-five miles<br />
from Pianosa, between Corsica and the Island of Elba,<br />
and had once touched there. This island was, always<br />
had been, and still is, completely deserted. It is a rock<br />
of almost conical form, which looks as though it had<br />
been thrust up by volcanic force from the depth to<br />
the surface of the ocean.” handwrote the writer in the<br />
novel supplement, published in the Journal des débats,<br />
between August 1844 and January 1846. It is a page of<br />
international vision that aids in rediscovering another of<br />
the worlds dreams, one of Italy’s many wonders.<br />

THE MONTECRISTO TREASURE<br />

Without displeasing the loyal readers of Alexandre Dumas,<br />
I know that the true treasure of Montecristo consists<br />
in the balance - unique in its kind - of a harsh and wild<br />
territory. This is why the D.M. of March 4 th , 1971, had<br />
foresight to establish the island as a Nature Reserve, which<br />
was then recharacterised as a Biogenetic Reserve (D.M.,<br />
December 12 th , 1977). Montecristo is a magmatic mass<br />
that consolidated between 7.3 and 5.1 million years ago,<br />
located halfway between the peninsula of Monte Argentario<br />
and Corsica. In 1988 the island was awarded the Diplome<br />
Européen del Consiglio d’Europa for Protected Areas due<br />
to its ecological and morphological characteristics. In<br />
recent years, noteworthy studies have been carried out on<br />
this pearl within the marvelous territory of the Arcipelago<br />
Toscano National Park (DPR, July 22 nd , 1996).<br />
For those who, like myself, have had the honour and the<br />
duty of commanding the Raggruppamento Carabinieri<br />
Biodiversità, Follonica Department, Montecristo is always<br />
one of the most delicate missions in the territory. It is the<br />
successor of the extraordinary effort made over the years<br />
by the State Forestry Corp, which then merged into the<br />
Carabinieri. A specific task has been handed down to<br />
us: to defend an area of 10.4 square kilometres, and a<br />
coastal development comprising of 16 kilometres. Indeed,<br />
a proper presence intends a profound intervention in the<br />
preservation of the island’s natural heritage and in the<br />
eradication of any foreign elements that may threaten<br />
it today, all exercised under strict control. I refer here to<br />
Ailanthus, a deciduous tree in the Simaroubaceae family<br />
which is thought to have origins in China, in the Maluku<br />
Islands and in North Vietnam. It is, therefore, not a native<br />
species. It was introduced to Europe in the first half of the<br />
eighteenth century and has since then begun an incessant<br />
process of colonisation of bare, over-populated and<br />
consumed areas, proving to be lethal for natural habitats.<br />
It is a tree that produces substances that are toxic to plants<br />
of different species. It was reported on the island for the<br />
first time by Stefano Sommier in 1898. One of our firsts<br />
tasks has therefore been to monitor its diffusion (equal to<br />
over 180 hectares), carry out preliminary tests and proceed<br />
with eradication through four methodologies linked to the<br />
characteristics of the plant.<br />
We have also done something else to make this island, with<br />
its almost elliptical shape, an authentic nature sanctuary.<br />
We have identified and studied 73 different species of<br />
epigeal macromycetes. We have mapped the asperity of the<br />
porphyroid granite spurs that enhance the natural beauty<br />
of peaks such as the Monte della Fortezza (645 metres<br />
above sea level), the Cima di Collo dei Lecci (563 msl),<br />
and including such evocative names as the impenetrable<br />
Punta del Diavolo. We have reinforced paths around these<br />
reference points, reserved for those who want to face<br />
the perilous walkways with their unfathomable beauty<br />
(always accompanied by our specialised personnel): from<br />
a comfortable visit at the Villa del Re to the ruins of the<br />
Monastery. We attempt to maintain the charm of the land<br />
that was so loved by Watson Taylor (owner of the island in<br />
the 1800s), the Marquis Ginori and the royal family who<br />
desired to create a hunting reserve on the island.<br />
At the dawn of the 1970s, Montecristo was known as<br />
the island of rats because of the proliferation of black rat<br />
that threatened the ecosystem as well as the lives in the<br />
nests of the Manx shearwater birds. It took us two years<br />
to eradicate, and to restore a more natural balance for the<br />
birds on the island.<br />
We did not do this for approval, but for the duty that we<br />
cultivate towards the creation that is also a marine reserve.<br />
Among our tasks is also that of standardising access to<br />
visitors on the island of Montecristo, which was included<br />
in zone 1 in 1996, with a limit of 1,000 annual visits using<br />
boats that respect access to the protected range which<br />
reaches the small port in Cala Maestra where two of our<br />
agents may verify the regular conduct of permitted activities<br />
and deal with the popularisation of the natural settings.<br />
Every fifteen days, we alternate between two soldiers who<br />
are stationed to protect this unique place who, through<br />
dedication and passion, allow the island of Montecristo to<br />
reveal itself in its irrepressible beauty.
