TATENDA CHIZU
MASVINGO – Twenty-one students from
GZU have been charged and are waiting
to appear before a disciplinary hearing
after they allegedly demanded $50 000
extortion from a company that had won a
tender to provide medical aid to University
students.
One of the senior members of the executive
is further accused of going back to the
medical aid on his own and demanded
$100 000 bribe to facilitate for a new fiveyear
contract to the same company.
All the 21 students are executive members
of the Students’ Union and they allegedly
demanded bribe money from Eternal
Peace Health Company. After many arm
twisting tactics and threats Eternal Peace
Health eventually paid $15 000 to the account
of one of the students’ relatives.
The matter came to light when Michael
Taderera reported the other students to
the University excluding himself which
forced the university to investigate. The
students are charged for contravening the
GZU Act as read with Ordinance No 2 and
each of them faces six counts.
GZU spokesperson, Andersen Chipatiso
said, “ We can confirm that the University
received reports of alleged cases of serious
impropriety on the part of some members
of the Student Representative Council.
The allegations are now the subject of
disciplinary processes instituted in terms of
Section 27 of the Great Zimbabwe University
Act (Chapter 25:24) and Rules of Great
Zimbabwe University Student Conduct and
Discipline Ordinance, 2004 Ordinance No.
2. In a nutshell, the allegations arose from
incidences where some members of the
Student Representative Council are alleged
to have demanded and received kickbacks
from companies for them to push and
influence for the said companies to be
awarded the right to offer services to the
University. You will agree with us that such
allegations, if true, are quite disturbing
given that corruption, is ascancerous and
destructive to society as it is, is creeping
and finding its way into our University
students. However, in line with our thrust
to preserve and advance ‘Unhu/Ubuntu’,
we shall endeavour to root out any form
of corruption from amongst our students
in order to prepare them to be honest,
hardworking graduates who will contribute
positively to the modernisation and
industrialisation of our economy by 2030.
As a university, we fully subscribe to His
Excellency the President of the Republic of
Zimbabwe Dr. E.D. Mnangagwa’s stance
on corruption where he observed that corruption
remains the major source of some
of the problems we face as a country and
its retarding impact on national development
cannot be overemphasized”.
According to a memorandum from the
GZU Senior Proctor’s office dated December
6, 2018 to the 21 students; they are all
facing six charges each connected to the
alleged extortion.
“All the named students are each charged
with contravening the GZU Act as read
with Ordinance No 2 of GZU. Each of the
students named is alleged to have the
provisions stated herein;” reads part of the
memo.
On count 1, the students are alleged to
have mandated Michael Taderera a losing
parliamentary candidate for Masvingo
urban constituency who identified himself
as president of the Students Union to
demand $50 000.
Taderera said allegations are false when
asked for a comment by The Mirror.
In the same year in 2017 and on count 2
Taderera and five other members of the
Union are said to have demanded bribe
money from any other medical aid that
expressed an interest in providing medical
aid services to students at the University.
The students are also said to have brought
Eternal Peace Health to a local hotel in
Masvingo for a meeting and demanded
that Eternal Peace Health pay costs.
On count 4 Taderera is alleged to have
called Eternal Peace Health and demanded
commission and threatened to organise a
demostration by the students against the
company and bad publicity. On count 5;
some 14 students who were drunk went
and caused mayhem at the Eternal Peace
Health offices in Harare.
Pushed into a corner Eternal Peace Health
paid $15 000 into the account of one
of the relatives of the students and the
amount is said to have been shared
equally with each member getting $600.
This offence constituted count 6.
Gesham Mutero of Eternal Peace Health
said he was forced to pay the $15 000
after threats of a demostration and bad
publicity. He said he however, could not
absorb the pressure anymore when in
2018 Michael Taderera demanded $100
000 so that he could facilitate for a fresh
20-year contract.
It is then that Mutero reported the matter
to the University authorities.
for giving preference to teachers
who have served outside the metropolitan
this will reduce the spread of HIV
the rural setup where they will gain
experience,” said Ndlovu.
200 cattle perish in Chiredzi as dry spell persists
MORRIS BISHI
CHIREDZI BUREAU
CHIREDZI - Over 200 cattle have died so
far this year in Chiredzi district as a result
of the drought caused by El Nino
with areas in Chiredzi South being the
most affected.
Chiredzi District Administrator (DA)
Lovemore Chisema said the cattle
started dying in December 2018 but
the numbers are now increasing on a
daily basis. He attributed the deaths
to lack of grazing pastures due to
drought. He said 188 deaths were officially
recorded as at 29 January 2019
but many other cattle deaths are not
reported.
"The District is now recording drought
induced cattle deaths on a daily basis.
This is because in areas mostly in
Chiredzi South there are no pastures
since they did not receive any meaningful
rains. Officially 188 deaths
. . . drought becomes dire
were recorded as at 29 January 2019
but there are many cases which go
unreported meaning that the numbers
are high.
“We wait to hear if Central Government
will give us assistance in the
form of supplementary feeding,” said
Chisema.
The MP for Chiredzi South, Kallisto
Gwanetsa said the drought situation
in his constituency is dire as people are
losing cattle on a daily basis. He said
the area from Runde to Limpopo is
yet to receive rains and boreholes are
drying up worsening the situation. He
urged cattle owners to de-stock as a
way of minimising loss.
"The situation in my constituency is
dire, cattle is dying on a daily basis.
The area from Runde to Limpopo did
not receive any meaningful rains this
season. I am conducting meetings
with village heads and councillors to
sensitise them on the drought and to
urge them to persuade villagers to destock.
I am also advising them to buy
supplementary feeding to minimise
loss" said Gwanetsa.
Chief Tshovani said there is need for
Government intervention to save people
as well as cattle from dying due to
the prevailing drought. He said communities
under his area did not plant
any crop since they did not receive any
rains.
El Nino is a climatic phenomenon that
occurs above the Pacific Ocean every
five years and causes extreme weather
conditions such as droughts and
floods in many regions of the world.
COMMENT
Climate change; everyone’s baby
Some time ago climate change was something that we
thought was happening only at the North Pole where
they were talking about melting ice and possibilities of
sea levels rising. Today we are experiencing the disastrous
effects of climate change on a daily basis. Rainfall
patterns have drastically changed and we are currently
going through a drought with many parts of the country
finding themselves dry. When it rains, where it really
rains, it rains cats and dogs leaving a trail of destruction
that takes with it even human lives. Thousands are facing
hunger and starvation. When the weather gets cold
or hot it goes down or up to extreme temperatures that
we have never experienced before and this is happening
all over the world. Recently in some parts of America it
was so cold you could throw boiling water in the air and
it would freeze before hitting the ground. In Australia it
was so hot even animals were fainting. We are being told
that if nothing more is urgently done on climate change
most of the ice on Mt Everest will melt with disastrous effects
on almost two billion people mostly in China, India
and Pakistan who rely on the ice for water.
Climate change is here with us, a stark reality we cannot
afford to ignore as it is now affecting each and every
one of us on a daily basis. Climate change is caused by
the smoke that we produce from vehicles, planes, trains,
factories and fires. It is caused by us cutting down trees
without replacing them. It is caused by gas from the
dung of numerous animals that we keep. Hence in all
this we humans are the culprits and therefore should
blame ourselves. If the situation continues as it is one
wonders whether this planet will actually be habitable in
a hundred years to come. It is therefore up to us to take
responsibility of the damaged we have already done and
continue to do to the environment and take drastic steps
to remedy the situation before it is too late. We need to
reduce the smoke we are causing, jealously preserve our
forests and grasslands and take tree planting very seriously.
Climate change is everyone’s responsibility, otherwise
we are just digging our own graves and those of
generations to come. Eventually there will be no generations
to talk about. The choice is ours.
has used this tube since 2010 till now because he
could not get a proper one from South Africa.
the young man is now having difficulties in
The ZANU PF chairman for National
Displinary Committee Paul Mangwana
confirmed the development at the
party’s Provincial Coordinating Committee
which held at Victoria Primary School
on Sunday.
Ngwenya and Nzombe were accused of
disrespecting the provincial leadership
by working with members of the opposition
party and thereby not following
party constitution.
According to Mangwana, the national
disciplinary committee resolved that the
provincial committee come up with a
decision on what to do with two.
“We decided that we should not solve
the problem at national level, rather we
decided to let your provincial team here
to solve it in the shortest period because
it is a trivial matter,” said Mangwana.
Chimedza appeal thrown out
MASVINGO – Former Minister of State
for Masvingo, Dr Paul Chimedza’s
appeal to re-join Zanu PF after his
dismissal in in 2017 has been thrown
out by the Zanu PF disciplinary committee.
The chairman for the National Disciplinary
Committee, Paul Mangwana
told party members at Masvingo Province’s
first Coordinating Committee
for 2019 at Victoria Primary School
today (Sunday) that Chimedza can
only re-join Zanu PF after spending
five years out of the party.
Efforts by The Mirror to get a comment
from Chimedza were futile.
“Chimedza appealed to come back
to the party and as a committee we
resolved that he should serve 5 years
out of the party then come back. The
province can however, approve his
return before the five years if makes
contributions that warrant,” said
Mangwana.
Man stabs Bikita sex
worker to death
TATENDA CHIZU
BIKITA - A man from Nyika Growth Point
has appeared at the local magistrates court
charged with murder after he allegedly
stabbed a sex worker twice with a knife causing
her death.
The incident happened last Friday at Hightown
Night Club.
According to the State outline Moreblessing
Madakuchekwa of Musavengana Village under
Chief Mukanganwi , Charity Matake, a fellow
sex worker and the accused Peter Gwari were
drinking beer together at Hightown Night Club.
At some stage Charity Matake who stayed in
the same room with Madakuchekwa decided to
retire to bed and she left the two at the bar.
When she got home she found Madakuchekwa’s
three-months old baby unattended and
shortly afterwards the accused arrived and
asked Matake to accompany him to his house.
Matake refused insisting that she wanted
to mind the baby that was crying. There was
a misunderstanding with Gwari trying to force
Matake to accompany him. Gwari started assaulting
Matake with a necklace chain and the
deceased arrived at that time.
Angry at Gwari, the deceased locked the
door from outside and cried out to neighbours
for help. Gwari allegedly broke the window,
jumped out and was sprayed with pepper spray
by the deceased. Gwari assaulted the deceased
then allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed
Madakuchekwa twice before running away.
MASVINGO – The ongoing
clashes in the AFM Church
have left pastors facing hard
times as elders who are
signatories to bank accounts
are refusing to sign withdrawals
for salaries and cash for
the day to day running of the
church.
The pastors cannot transact
on church accounts because
in terms of the law the accounts
are frozen until the
High court determines the
legitimate leadership of AFM.
Although pastors in Masvingo
recently got a reprieve from
the magistrates’ court to continue
work at their parishes
after being kicked out. for
staging a coup in the church,
they face a new hurdle; control
of the purse.
One pastor, Joseph Madzinga
from Mucheke Assembly
has not been able to access $5
000 from the church account
since November last year.
Madzinga is now in trouble after
being reported to the Police
for allegedly trying to use violence
to force Godfrey Ncube,
the assembly’s administrator
and treasurer to sign out cash
for him.
The elders are aligned to the
Amon Madawo camp which is
for all of the church’s pastors
while pastors in urban salaries
are aligned to Cosam Chiyangwa
who wants pastors to earn
salaries according to the financial
capacity of their congregations.
The second option has seen
pastors in the rural areas living
a pauper’s life because their
congregants are poor.
Ncube filed a Police report
against Madzinga for allegedly
sending goons to force him
into signing off $5 000 from
the church’s bank account.
The case was reported on
Pedzisai Kambarami (77), who
was stabbed by Finish Kambarami.
The incident occurred at
Gonomundiro Village in Chief
Neshangwe’s area in the
morning.
It is alleged that Finish, who
was with his parents, asked
his father for $500 so that he
could go back to school so
that he would buy a car later
on in life.
His parents however said
they did not have the money.
This did not go down well
with Finish, who then took a
kitchen knife threatening to
stab his mother. His father followed
the two into the kitchen
and intervened. Finish instead
took a spear intending to stab
his father but they both wrestled
for the weapon.
His mother ran to their
neighbours for help but when
she came back, she found her
husband’s body lying on the
floor in a pool of blood, with
cuts on the forehead.
Village head Pasi Gonomundiro
told The Mirror that
Finish axed his father seven
times leaving his brains out of
his head.
Gonomundiro also told The
acquit Finish, he would be
banished from the village.
A report was made
and Finish was arrested
by the Police.
The continued seizure of
Tongaat land has also seriously
affected its sugar production
and is one of the
reasons why the company
had to buy cane. There have
also been complaints that
the new farmers had caused
a sharp drop in production
of sugarcane per hectare because
of their poor farming
Mnangagwa protégé dies
MIRIAM MANGWAYA
CHIVHU BUREAU
CHIRUMHANZU - President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s
close ally, Gerald Mudzengi, who was Chief
Chirumhanzu is no more.
Chief Chirumhanzu died on Wednesday at
Parirenyatwa Hospital in Harare after a long illness.
Burial arrangements are yet to be made
Minister of State for Midlands Province Larry
Mavhima confirmed the death to The Mirror.
Chief Chirumhanzu of the Mhazi clan, was one
of the two chiefs in Chirumhanzu District. He was
appointed chief in 2005 during an installation ceremony
held at his home in Chizhou area. He died
after serving as chief for close to 14 years.
He is a descendant of Nherera, one of the two
houses in the lineage of the Chirumhanzu chieftainship.
However, his chieftainship was marred with legitimacy
disputes which saw at one time members
of his clan signing a petition to recall him as
Chief over allegations of corruption and failure to
respect cultural values.
The Chirumhanzu clan members were challenging
his legitimacy as chief, accusing him of taking
away people’s cattle and ruthlessly presiding over
cases at his traditional court, among other allegations.
The Government set a commission in 2018 to
investigate him over the allegations but it cleared
him of all the charges.
Chief Chirumhanzu served in the provincial
chiefs’ council from 2013-2018 but in July 2018,
he lost his bid to be re-elected into the same council
during the elections that were held Gweru.
Identical twin in court
for raping brother’s lover
SYDNEY NCUBE
ZVISHAVANE BUREAU
ZVISHAVANE – Taking advantage of the similar
features between them, Lloyd Ncube (34) who
stays in Maglas Township in Zvishavane allegedly
tried to trick his identical twin brother’s
lover into sleeping with him.
However, the complainant soon noticed the
difference and ordered Ncube out of her family
house.
Ncube would not have any of that, according
to a State outline and he proceeded to rape the
complainant.
Ncube appeared before Resident Magistrate
Archie Wochiunga on Friday facing charges of
rape after he impersonated his twin brother.
It is the State case that on November 19,
2018 at around 1230am at Maglas High Density
Suburb in Zvishavane, the accused who is the
identical brother to the complainant’s boyfriend
Laytone Ncube went to her house pretending to
be the complainant’s boyfriend. The complainant
noticed that the accused was not her boyfriend
and chucked him out of the room.
The accused refused to leave and told her that
he was hungry and pushed her onto the bed.
He lifted up her skirt to the waist and had sexual
intercourse with her without her consent.
He was remanded in custody to February 15,
MASVINGO – Murder is the last crime that one
must commit at least judging by the fear,
anxiety confusion and desperation that grips
the offender after committing the offence.
After murdering elderly Johannes Mudoro
and getting away with money from the deceased’s
EcoCash account, Francis Mugabe
(29) and his alleged accomplice Tinashe Chikumbi
walked nearly 200km on foot in a bid
to escape from the law.
The arduous journey from Runyowa Business
Centre near Mpandawana to Birchenough
Bridge took three long days.
In Birchenough Bridge Chikumbi dumped
Mugabe and went away with all the money
and the desperate Mugabe who was left without
money, food or clothes decided to make
the return journey home again on foot. High
Court Judge Justice Mawadze who presided
over the murder case heard that Mugabe
wanted to go back and collect his clothes so
he could run away to a safe place.
However hunger got the better of him and
he was forced to steal meal-mealie and chicken
but was caught and arrested
Mugabe appeared before Masvingo High
Court Judge, Justice Garainesu Mawadze and
was on Tuesday convicted and sentenced to
30 years in jail.
Chikumbi is still at large
The State presented overwhelming evidence
which incriminated him and Chikumbi.
Mugabe said he killed the deceased because
he was jobless after losing a job as a
herdboy. He said he wanted some money to
travel back home.
Mugabe and Chikumbi struck the deceased
four times on the head using axes.
The State said sometime in May 2018, Chikumbi
and Mugabe connived to kill the deceased
and steal money from his EcoCash
money wallet after he sold a beast.
