of excused absences, it is the responsibility of the student to arrange with the teacher an
alternate time to complete an assessment. Our staff aims to be fair and flexible with missed
assessments. Student learning will be negatively impacted if students demonstrate a pattern
Attendance/Late Responsibilities and Expectations at M.E. LaZerte:
● Attending each class every day on time is one of the most important contributing
factors to student learning & success;
● Responsibility for attendance comes from students and parents. All absences must
be reported to the main office, by a parent phone call or signed parent note, within 7
calendar days of the absence. Medical documentation is required for ongoing
absenteeism due to health concerns lasting more than 3 consecutive days;
● Students that need to leave the school during class time due to illness or to attend an
appointment must sign out through the main office for safety reasons. Office staff
will need to speak with a parent/guardian by phone before the student can sign out;
● All unexcused absences from class will be recorded and will be reported to the home
on a daily basis by an automated phone reporting system or by teachers;
13 |40
● Students are responsible to sign the late book located in every classroom when
coming late to class.
● Students should not to be walking into class late with food or beverages;
● 90% attendance and lates is required for all students to take part in school activities
(e.g. Taste of LaZerte, Grad & Commencement, tournaments, school celebrations);
and
● A combination of more than three lates and/or absences is a cause for concern and
it is important for students and parents and school staff to learn more about this
emerging pattern. Interventions may occur to assist in establishing a more positive
trend.
Students are responsible for all course material missed while absent for any reason .
Medical and dental appointments should be made outside of school time if possible. If a
student will be absent due to illness or to attend an appointment, students must sign out
through the main office. The office staff will need to speak with a parent or guardian by
phone before the student can sign out.
M.E. LaZerte does not permit early dismissal for summer holidays. Missed instruction and
assessments could seriously jeopardize students’ success. Parents are requested not to
schedule holidays or pull students out of school prior to, or during instructional time and
major exam periods. Absenteeism will be addressed through communication between
teacher, student, parent and administration. Excessive unexcused absences may result in
withdrawal from classes.
14 |40
Daily summaries of student attendance are available on SchoolZone and upon request by
phoning the school. Students are responsible for all course material missed while absent
for any reason. Medical and dental appointments should be made outside of school time, if
possible. Parents should not allow students to miss school prior to or during major exam
periods or for any extended periods of time. Absenteeism will be addressed through
communication between teacher, student, parent and administration. M.E. LaZerte does
not support early dismissal for summer holidays. Missed instruction, exams and
assignments can seriously jeopardize students’ success, and excessive unexcused absences
may result in withdrawal from classes.
Cell Phones & Electronic Devices Responsibilities and Expectations:
Cell phones and other electronic devices, including earphones/earbuds should only be used
in class under the direction of the teacher to support instruction. The following uses of
technology do not contribute to learning and are therefore not permitted in classes:
● sending or receiving text or instant messages;
● checking voicemail;
● making or receiving calls;
● taking/sharing unauthorized pictures or video; and
● checking what time it is.
Cell phones are not to be used in the hallway during instructional time. Once the moving
music starts playing to signal that classes are about to begin, students must turn off their
cell phones and keep them out of sight. Students not complying with cell phone
expectations must respectfully cooperate when any staff member asks them to hand over
their phone. The phone will be brought to the office and the student must speak with an
administrator at the end of the day to have the phone returned. Consequences may
include: parent contact, a warning, detentions, turning the cell phone in at the office every
day, loss of cell phone privileges and suspensions.
15 |40
Clothing Responsibilities and Expectations:
M.E. LaZerte Students are expected to dress respectfully. This means:
● Students should remove headwear prior to entering the school (unless worn for
religious reasons). This includes hats, hoods, bandanas, do-rags, etc.;
● Clothing that is insulting/offensive/unsuitable for school wear is inappropriate. This
may include graphics depicting or suggesting violence, profanity, pornography,
alcohol, drugs, etc.; and
● “Underwear” items should remain under cover in our learning environment.
Students whose dress does not meet the requirements of our dress expectations will be
asked to change into appropriate wear.
Course Change Guidelines/Dropping a Course Responsibilities and Expectations:
Our time-table is based on student choices provided during the spring pre-enrollment and
classes are created based on requests. Because of this, few student timetable changes
should be required (or can be accommodated). Students must make an appointment before
the start of school or the start of second semester to do a course change. Students must
bring a signed parent/guardian note with them to their appointment authorizing the course
change; otherwise no changes can be made. Course changes need to be completed prior to
the start of classes.
16 |40
Please look at the course change guidelines we will be adhering to for the school year. A
course change might be considered or possibly provided if:
● a required course is needed for grad requirements (and has an open spot);
● a student is failing a prerequisite course;
● a student is not meeting the prerequisite minimum; and
● a student has successfully completed the course (summer school).
Course changes for second semester are not guaranteed or always possible because of
enrolment limits in a class. Students may need to consider summer school or alternative
educational opportunities.
Course Mark Appeal Responsibilities and Expectations :
If students feel that a course mark was arrived at unfairly or an error has been made, they
may appeal the mark.
● The appeal should be made first to the classroom teacher. If the student is still not
satisfied with the outcome, he/she may then contact the department head. The
department head will check the mark, discuss the concerns with the teacher and
make sure that it is correct according to the records. Should the student still need
clarification, he/she may then appeal to the designated assistant principal.
Emergency Procedures Responsibilities and Expectations:
Our student’s safety is of utmost importance to us. It is imperative that students do not
use their cell phone during an “on alert”, evacuation or lockdown. Students are expected to
follow the orderly conduct and rules given at the time of the procedure. It is also expected
that students use one earbud (instead of both) everyday when in the school so emergency
announcements can be heard. Parents will be notified by SchoolZone after a legitimate
emergency procedure to receive a debrief of the incident.
Fees Responsibilities and Expectations:
School fees should be paid on registration day. Parents are able to pay school fees online
through SchoolZone. If families are unable to pay the full amount on registration day, they
may set up a payment plan with the Accounts Department. Failure to pay fees may result in
students not being able to participate in non-curricular activities such as sports teams and
graduation/commencement. Students are responsible for the care of the textbooks that are
signed out to them, and textbooks must be returned at the end of the course. Students will
be responsible to pay for lost or damaged textbooks.
Field Trips Responsibilities and Expectations:
M.E. LaZerte recognizes field trips are valuable educational activities which enhance
student learning and development. Throughout the school year, students will be invited to
participate in field trips in order to enhance and complement course work through the use
of facilities and sites outside of the school. Students are not allowed to drive themselves or
other students to or from a field trip. Students are not allowed to leave a field trip without
a combined teacher and parent’s permission. In order to inform parents of the goals of the
trip, (as well as location, special provisions, safety requirements and potential costs) a field
trip consent form will be sent home to the students involved. A parent or guardian
signature will be required in order for the student to participate. If you have any questions
regarding any aspects of field trips we would welcome your inquiries at 780.408.9800.
Fitness Centre Responsibilities and Expectations:
We have a top notch fitness centre that rivals many professional health workout businesses.
Students have access to this centre for a nominal fee. If students are using the fitness centre
during a spare (Grade 11 & 12 only can have spares) they must be in the facility by the start
of the period, changed into fitness attire and must stay in the facility until the bell rings to
end the period.
Food Service- Milton’s and The Canoe Responsibilities and Expectations:
● Milton’s is one of the multi-purpose areas in our school and is used as both a
teaching/learning area as well as place for individual/small study groups to complete
work;
● They are open for food services during the school day and our intent is to have
healthy food choices at a reasonable cost. This can include fruit smoothies, veggies,
salads, paninis, sandwiches, pasta, and hot food meals for $6 or less;
● These facilities are a service to our students and respect is expected. Please be
courteous - don’t buy for friends and don’t cut in line;
● They are intended as areas for learning and eating; card playing is not allowed during
instructional time;
● They are part of our school home, so please clean your table and push in your chair
upon leaving;
● They accept cash and debit along with ID cards (which can be loaded up with
money to spend in the cafeteria); and
● An ATM is located outside of Milton’s for student use.
Fourth Year of High School Responsibilities and Expectations:
Edmonton Public Schools may allow students, who meet the criteria, to attend their
designated high school for a fourth year. At M.E. LaZerte, opportunities for a fourth year
are very limited because of space but students still have the option to attend Centre High,
Argyll, Outreach/Learning Stores and Metro Continuing Education. Students should meet
with their counsellor if they want to explore this possibility.
Friday Prayer Responsibilities and Expectations:
We offer the opportunity for students to pray in community on Fridays during the lunch
break. Students who participate in prayer are expected to attend all classes on time.
Graduation - Commencements Responsibilities and Expectations:
To be eligible to participate in our school sponsored M.E. LaZerte Commencement, a
Grade 12 student must:
● have 90% attendance and punctuality (no more than 10% unexcused absences or
10% unexcused lates). For commencement purposes the school will only count an
absence or late as “excused” if parents/guardians report the reason to the main
office within one week of the absence or late. Medical documentation may be requested
for chronic absenteeism (even if excused). If parents/guardians see any discrepancies
in attendance, (as communicated in SchoolZone and the automated phone system)
they must notify the main office within one week of the date of the absence or late
in order for it to be corrected;
● be a student in good standing by abiding by all M.E. LaZerte School rules and
behavior expectations;
● be on track to complete his/her high school diploma by the end of June;
● have no outstanding fees (including grad fees); and
● register for a myPass account.
Graduates and their family members are encouraged to go to our website to locate
important dates and relevant information about graduation and commencement. There are
a maximum of three (3) guest tickets per graduating student that are available for purchase
for commencement at the Jubilee Auditorium but unlimited tickets for purchase at the
banquet (Shaw Conference Centre).
Hallways Responsibilities and Expectations:
At M.E. LaZerte High School we want students in class, on time with all necessary
materials, and ready to learn. In order to encourage better traffic flow, students are not to
gather on the ramp (it’s a no stopping zone) or along the atrium rails. Staff members will
ask students to ‘walk & talk’ to ensure traffic flows well. Moving Music is 3 minutes prior
to the bell and reminds students to be moving to class. It is the students’ responsibility to
obtain a hall pass from their teacher if they need to leave a classroom. Any student who is
20 |40
in the halls during class time must be in possession of a hall pass or they may receive a
consequence. Students who have spares:
● are not to be in hallways, stairwells, or the atrium;
● can leave the school or go to Milton’s, the Library or Fitness Centre; and
● can wait outside the front school doors during decent weather or in the front foyer
outside the main office in cold weather so they do not disrupt in session classes.
Information Access Responsibilities and Expectations:
At M.E. LaZerte, we believe that students are most successful when students, parents, and
staff work as a team, and parents will always be informed about student progress and
issues. When a student turns 18, he/she is entitled to make a choice about whether or not
the school continues to have contact with parents and/or guardians. At M.E. LaZerte
High School, we will continue to have contact with parents and or guardians until a student
completes their schooling with us. If a student turns 18 years of age during the school year
and does not want us to have parents and/or guardians as our primary contact, it is the
student’s responsibility to notify our office at that time. Together the student and
administrator will contact parents to make them aware.
Injuries & First Aid Responsibilities and Expectations:
Your safety is our utmost concern, and many processes are in place to ensure student safety
& wellness. Students must report any injuries immediately to the teacher in charge of an
activity or to the main office. We have multiple people at the school who are first aid
trained and our intent is to always make sure our students are cared for in a safe learning
environment. A written report of any accident will be completed by the teacher or
administrator and parents will be notified.
Library Responsibilities and Expectations:
The library is open from 8 am to 4 pm Monday to Friday. We encourage students to use
our quiet space to do research, homework, assignments or to relax and read. We offer
desktop computers, charging stations as well as a wide range of print resources. Check out
our large fiction collection, recreational reading supports and vocabulary development for
successful learning. During class time, students must provide their school identification if
they are on a spare or a hall pass if their teacher is giving them permission to work in the
library. No food or drink other than a water bottle is permitted.
Locked Doors Responsibilities and Expectations :
All outside doors are open until 9:05 am each day. After that time, only the two front doors
will remain open to enter the school. Students should not open any locked doors for
individuals attempting to enter the building.
Lockers Responsibilities and Expectations:
Lockers will be assigned by teachers and the combination (or spare key) is shared with the
office. Lockers are the property of M.E. LaZerte School. Students are responsible for the
cleanliness and care of their lockers and will be held responsible for any defacing or damage
to the inside of the locker occurring during the school year. Students should not bring
valuables or large amounts of money to school. Valuable items should not be left in
backpacks, in classrooms, or in a student’s locker (or the physical education lockers). The
school cannot be responsible for any locker losses or unattended valuables left in an
unsecured state. Students are not permitted to share lockers. Students can either purchase
a quality lock from the school or use their own. School officials may search a student’s
locker at any time and seize any suspicious or illegal materials, and these may be used as
evidence against the student in disciplinary proceedings.
MEL Time Responsibilities and Expectations:
M.E. LaZerte operates on a two-day cycle. This allows some classes to meet every second
day (all year courses) and other classes to meet every day (semestered courses).
MEL Time is a closed campus activity where all students extend their learning, pursue
individual interests, collaborate with peers, or seek tutorial/learning supports. It occurs
between Block 1 and 2 on Mondays Students and sign up through SchoolZone and
sessions will become available at 8:30 am on the Tuesday prior to the session being offered.
MEL Time gives choice about what is learned & when it is learned, and it can be mandated
Parental Involvement Responsibilities and Expectations:
Schools have the responsibility to provide instructional programs that ensure students meet
graduation requirements. Parental support is a vital component of students’ success in
school. Please encourage your child to:
● Do homework consistently - check with the teacher if you think your child needs
more practice in course work;
● Attend all classes regularly and punctually - 90% is the minimum attendance we need
to assist your child in learning;
● Study for exams - and try different study methods for different courses. A free EPL
Library card allows free access to study websites like Solaro and Brainfuse;
Parents wishing to drop off or pick up students in front of the school on 144th Avenue
must do so past the west crosswalk where parking and stopping is allowed. Students are
reminded that there is no loitering in the parking lot at any time.
Progress Reporting Responsibilities and Expectations:
In an effort to safeguard our environment and to promote much more accurate and
efficient reporting practices, M.E. LaZerte uses paperless reporting. An update on student
progress is posted during the last week of each month. Please ensure that you access
SchoolZone on a continual basis for evaluation and attendance results. Should you require
assistance in obtaining and/or using SchoolZone please contact the school at 780.408.9800.
In addition, you are encouraged to communicate with your classroom teacher(s) to
regularly inquire about student progress and attendance. The most effective means of
communication with staff is via email, and our District email format is simply
firstname.lastname@epsb.ca
Technology at M.E. LaZerte Responsibilities and Expectations:
Technology can be a powerful tool to enhance learning, enabling students to access
information and collaborate with others across the school, community, and the Internet.
We believe that all students, staff and parents must be positive digital citizens by following
standards of acceptable use when using either school-owned technology (software,
hardware, and Internet) or their own personal electronic device for school purposes while
enrolled at M.E. LaZerte School. Students should understand that having access to
technology in school is a privilege, and this privilege may be revoked if students do not use
technology responsibly and according to these acceptable use expectations.
Student Responsibilities & Declaration For Acceptable Use: I will use technology:
and
personal electronic device if there are reasonable grounds to believe that there has
been a breach of school rules or discipline policies and that a search of the device
would reveal evidence of that breach. This may include (but is not limited to)
Unacceptable Behaviour:
Any behaviour which disrupts the educational atmosphere of the school or which interferes
with the rights of others to learn, to be respected or to feel safe is unacceptable. Edmonton
Public Schools’ policy on student behaviour and conduct outlines the following:
Students are accountable for their behaviour whether or not it occurs on school property
or within the school day. When behaviour that occurs off school property, or outside of
regular school hours, threatens the safety or well-being of individuals within the school
community or disrupts the learning environment, school administrators may apply
consequences for the behaviour.
Examples of unacceptable behaviour include, but are not limited to:
1. behaviours that interfere with the learning of others and/or the school environment
2. behaviours that create unsafe conditions
3. acts of bullying, harassment, threats, or intimidations whether it be in person,
indirectly, or by electronic means
4. physical violence
5. retribution against any person who has intervened to prevent or report bullying or
any other incident or safety concern
6. possession, use or distribution of substances restricted by federal, provincial,
municipal, District or school authorities
7. any illegal activity such as:
32 |40
a. possession, use or distribution of illegal substances
b. possession of a weapon or use of a weapon (or replica) to threaten, intimidate
or harm others
c. possession, use, display, or distribution of offensive messages, videos or
images
d. theft or possession of stolen property
8. any breach of rules and expectations established by District administrative
regulations or a school-based code of conduct
9. failure to comply with Section 12 of the School Act.
School Responses to Unacceptable Behaviour:
If students fail to meet classroom, school or District expectations, a range of responses or
consequences may be put in place to address unacceptable behaviour. Edmonton Public
Schools’ policy outlines the following:
Unacceptable behaviour may be grounds for disciplinary action which provides the student
with an opportunity for critical learning and reflection in the areas of personal
accountability and responsibility, the development of empathy, as well as communication,
conflict resolution, and social skills development.
The specific circumstances of the situation and of the student are taken into account when
determining appropriate responses to unacceptable behaviour.
When a student engages in unacceptable behaviour, consequences may include, but are not
limited to:
● temporary assignment of a student to an alternate supervised area within the school
● temporary assignment of a student to an alternate learning location
● short term removal of privileges
● interventions such as positive behaviour supports, contracts, counselling, restorative
practices
● replacement or reimbursement for loss of or damage to property
● in-school or out-of-school suspension
● referral to Attendance Board or outside agency
● recommendation for expulsion
Students are expected to cooperate with investigations by school administration. When
contemplating and conducting a reasonable search of student property (including electronic
devices), school administration must balance a student’s reduced expectation of privacy in
relation to school matters, with the need to provide a welcoming, caring, respectful and safe
learning environment that respects diversity and fosters a sense of belonging for all
students and staff.
34 |40
At M.E. LaZerte High School, we are committed to ensuring that our school is a safe and
productive learning environment. Where necessary, appropriate interventions or
disciplinary action may be used to address unacceptable behaviour by students.
If students are having difficulty resolving a conflict, they should seek assistance from a staff
member that can include a school counsellor, administrator, or school resource officer.
Physical violence or fighting to resolve conflicts is not tolerated. Students who fight may
receive serious consequences that could include (but are not limited to) detentions,
suspensions, alternative to suspensions, or a recommendation to the Superintendent for
expulsion from M.E. LaZerte. Possession of a weapon will likely lead to a recommendation
for expulsion and involvement of the police. Anything that has the potential to be harmful
to one self or others may be considered a weapon.
