1,600 trees and counting 

Somerset Wood organisers say thank you 

The first phase of Somerset Wood tree planting is now complete with organisers 

thanking volunteers for their “extraordinary” response. Over 200 volunteers have 

given their time to get involved in a project which will create a lasting, living memorial 

to the 11,281 Somerset residents who lost their lives in the first World War. 

The Somerset Wood project is a joint partnership between Taunton Deane Borough 

Council, Somerset County Council, and Cheddon Fitzpaine and West Monkton Parish 

Councils. Located in the largely rural parish of Cheddon Fitzpaine to the north of 

Taunton and west of Monkton Heathfield, 14,000 trees will eventually be planted to 

create a community wood in honour of the Somerset residents who died in the first 

World War. The Somerset Wildlife Trust has helped coordinate the volunteer effort 

and the Woodland Trust has helped secure the trees.

Dear Readers, 

Phishing scams 

This month I want to take a look at phishing emails. There has been a large increase of 

spam and phishing mail lately, mostly from Apple or Amazon, and I want to help you to 

spot them. The people who send these emails are trying to con you out of money, and 

they are getting clever! My mum received one only last week and even I struggled to see 

it was a phishing scam. 

So let’s start with Apple emails. These claim to be from Apple and generally have the 

same style to them, saying your account is suspended and asking you to open an 

attachment or click on a link to verify information. It is generally not the attachment 

which is the issue but where that attachment then asks you to go, normally a website 

that “looks” like Apple's website, but is nothing like it behind the scenes. Then once you 

submit all the information which claims to be for your account, it redirects you to the 

actual Apple site, so you would be none the wiser. But now they have your details 

including any security questions you may have answered giving them the answers they 

need to reset your password and use your account. 

The email from Amazon was so good that I really struggled to find the chink. It looked like 

a normal Amazon confirmation email, the font, the colours, everything about it. Even the 

sent name Amazon.co.uk however, it was only when I 

clicked on the name that I saw the part, was actually 

hiding a very strange email address that was not Amazon. I then checked a little further, 

and the link half way down the page to Cancel the order, again went to a very different 

location, away from Amazon. 

What can these companies do? The bottom line is nothing. Amazon, Apple, and all the 

other legitimate companies spend a lot of time and money trying to find solutions to 

these scam emails and shut the operators down, but as quick as they shut one down, 

another ten will start up. What can we, as customers, do? If you know you have ordered a 

new kettle, and the email shows a new kettle, and you know you went to the right site, 

then it is probably OK. If however it says that you ordered a new iPhone X, but you know 

you didn't, check! Don't click on the links in the email but instead go to the site it claims 

to be from. Type in the address yourself and then check your recent purchase history. If it 

shows you ordered an Iphone X then change your password straight away as your 

account may have been compromised. 

I hope this short insight has helped. I did receive an email from Jeremy regarding an 

Outlook problem with Windows 10 but I was pleased to learn his problem had been 

resolved without my assistance.

Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance 

Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge 2019 

Dorset & Somerset Air Ambulance will be hosting their 9 th annual Coast to Coast Cycle 

Challenge on 12 May 2019 starting at 11am in Watchet and ending in West Bay. 

In 2018, 524 supporters took part in the event to help raise funds to keep Dorset & 

Somerset Air Ambulance flying, and in doing so collaboratively rode over 28,296 miles 

and raised over £62,000 - thats enough to fund approx 17 missions by the air 

ambulance.

Watchet Coastal Community Team wins major funding for 

community action programme 

Watchet Coastal Community Team is delighted that their application for £240,000 for 

Place Based Social Action has been successful. 

The project is one of only ten places countrywide to be awarded the funding from The 

National Lottery Community Fund and Department of Digital, Culture Media and Sport 

(DCMS). 

They are now able to deliver six strands of community action projects that aim to work 

with and engage local people to help solve local problems. The funding is to support 

volunteering and social action in the town over three years, and is the result of a 

year’s worth of work by the WCCT to establish what the local difficulties were in the 

town and co-design solutions as to how local people might be involved in fixing some 

of those problems. 

The funding will support six projects that include: young people, peer tutors and a 

‘mini university’ community transport, information sharing, deliberative democracy 

and digital gaming. Part of the mini university project will also be to refurbish the 

much loved Harbour Community Bookshop building at 7 The Esplanade, as a 

community volunteer build.

West Somerset Council has given its firm backing to a 

community group hoping to breathe new life into Watchet. 

The Onion Collective aims to create an arts, cultural and social enterprise 

development with a national profile at East Quay. The scheme will provide over two 

hundred new jobs from the building phase through to operation and increased 

tourism, and will bring economic prosperity to the area. 

The Full Council gave its support with approval of a lease on part of the land at East 

Quay and a loan of up to £1.5m to support the Group while its application for funding 

from the Coastal Communities Fund (CCF) is decided. 

West Somerset Council had appointed the Onion Collective as the preferred bidder for 

a development of the land at East Quay in February 2015 and granted planning 

consent in June 2018 after The Onion Collective’s consultation showed strong public 

support.

Music and Magic Night 

A novel and entertaining ‘Music & Magic’ Charity Night 

is being held on Friday 22 nd March at Wootton Courtenay Village Hall 

and is organised by the Exmoor support group of The Brooke. 

David ‘The Rockin’ Rev’Croucher will be providing an eclectic mix 

of music from a number of his ‘Burns’ guitars collection and will 

include music from the 60’s through to the 80’s.

Minehead’s first literary festival 

to take place on 27 April 2019 

Minehead Literary Festival will take place on Saturday April 27 at the Methodist Hall, Minehead, 

featuring presentations by four leading writers with ties to the area who will explore the importance 

of place in their writing. 

Speaking at the festival will be one of the country’s foremost writers of novels and short stories Tessa Hadley, 

winner of the 2018 Edge Hill Short Story Prize and author of critically-acclaimed novels Clever Girl, The London 

Train and The Past. Tessa Hadley has just published her seventh novel Late in the Day to rave reviews hailing 

her as ‘one of Britain’s finest writer of contemporary fiction’ (Thea Lenarduzzi, Vogue). She is joined by BBC radio 

producer, writer and bird watcher Tim Dee, whose new book Landfill is about how rubbish tips sustain bird life, 

and Pamela Holmes, best-selling author of first novel The Huntingfield Paintress and winner of the Jane Austen 

Short Story Award in 2014. Popular local writer and ‘the best contemporary writer of pony stories around’ Victoria 

Eveleigh will be giving a special illustrated presentation about her much-loved series of children’s books. 

A writing competition, with separate classes for adults and children, is being organised in the run-up to the 

festival, and an art exhibition will run from April 2 to May 6 at the Regal Theatre and Toucan Wholefoods to 

celebrate Minehead Literary Festival, featuring work by local artists Jo Minoprio, Leo Davey and Pauline Clyde 

and focusing on the theme of the importance of place. 

Catering for Minehead Literary Festival will be provided by Toucan Wholefoods and tickets may be booked in 

advance for the individual events or for the full one-day festival.

As part of the Minehead Literary Festival a short story competition with separate classes for adults 

and children is being organised in advance of the festival. 

The children’s competition is organised by West Somerset Academies Trust and supported by the local creative 

writing group Café Write. 

Children aged between 5 and 9 years old are invited to write a short, illustrated story or poem of no more 

than 250 words, entitled ‘The Magic Train’. 

Children aged 10 to 15 years old are invited to compose a short story or poem of up to 500 words with the 

theme ‘The Day all the Teachers Disappeared’. 

The theme for adults (16+) is ‘Minehead: Gateway to Exmoor’ and this competition is run in collaboration 

with the creative writing group, Minehead Writers. Type-written entries of no more than 500 words are invited 

from those aged 16 and over, and may be either prose or poetry. 

Only one entry for each competitor should be submitted, providing name, age (optional in the adult class) and 

contact details on a separate sheet, to ensure judging anonymity. 

All children’s entries should be sent either by email to mineheadliteraryfestival@gmail.com or by post to West 

Somerset Academies Trust, Minehead Middle School, Ponsford Road, Minehead TA24 5RH (and marked ‘Literary 

Competition’). Adult entries should be sent by email to mineheadliteraryfestival@gmail.com or by post to Literary

All entries must be received no later than March 31, 2019. The adult class will be judged by festival speaker and 

‘one of Britain’s finest writer of contemporary fiction’ Tessa Hadley, and the judge for the two children’s classes will 

be the author of much-loved children’s books Victoria Eveleigh. 

Winners will be announced at Minehead Literary Festival on the April 27 and winning entries will be published in the 

West Somerset Free Press and displayed in Minehead Library.
