friends and family. 

The layout is similar in 

the sub-acute rehabilitation 

small house. There are 30 

residents spread out over 

two floors. After an illness, 

injury or surgery, patients 

are often discharged from 

the hospital to Victorian 

Village for physical, occupational 

and speech 

therapies. These patients 

receive therapy in a building 

designed to look like 

home. The short hallways 

and home-like setting offer 

realistic opportunities for 

patients to practice tasks 

and activities they will be 

doing once they are home. 

“We receive a lot of great 

feedback from people who 

have gone through our rehab 

program,” Visser said. 

“This really is an ideal environment 

to get better after 

a hospital stay.”

Improve flexibility with

Let’s be honest. Are people 

really taking the time 

to stretch each day? They 

always hear the advice to 

stretch before a workout 

to get the muscles primed 

and ready to go, but it’s not 

just before workouts that 

stretching is important. 

Stretching should be a regular 

part of your day, just 

like brushing your teeth. 

We stretch to improve 

our flexibility. Our flexibility 

is the available 

range of motion of our 

joints. Most often individuals 

are too flexible in one 

area (think the arch in the 

back of a gymnast) and not 

flexible enough in others 

(the hunchback of Notre 

Dame). Flexibility of our 

joints in the appropriate 

range of motion is important 

for several reasons: 

Flexibility allows the 

muscles surrounding the 

joint to fire correctly. This 

helps us with our posture. 

When we have good posture, 

we have decreased 

stress along the joints of 

the spine, hips, knees and 

ankles. With less stress 

on our joints, our muscles 

continue to fire correctly 

for greater periods of 

time preserving the wear 

and tear on our cartilage. 

If our muscles are firing 

how they are supposed 

to, our body moves more 

efficiently, therefore we 

have less chance of injury 

because we are decreasing 

bad stress and strain 

throughout the body. 

Stretching also helps to 

increase blood and nutrient 

supply to muscles and 

cartilage. This helps to 

decrease muscle soreness 

after exercises or participating 

in greater amount 

of activity than your body 

is used to. 

There are many do’s 

and don’ts of stretching. 

Let’s take our hamstrings 

for example. My husband 

has tight hamstrings. I 

seem him stand up, bend 

over and bounce to try 

and touch his toes. This 

is his idea of stretching. 

This is absolutely wrong. 

First and foremost, you 

should never bounce into 

a stretch. When muscles 

and surrounding tissues 

are tight, they need time 

to progress into a stretch. 

Hold your stretches for 

at least one minute of 

time. This is not going to 

change the length of your 

hamstring muscle, but it 

will, over time, change 

how mobile the hamstring 

muscle becomes, allowing 

you to gain range of 

motion. Secondly, my dad 

should be lying on his 

back or seated in a chair. 

His hamstrings are tight. If 

he bends over to touch his 

toes, he is just bending at 

his back, not getting a true 

stretch of his hamstring. 

If anything, he is putting 

himself in harm’s way of 

injuring his back because 

his posture is not allowing 

him to fire his glutes 

and stomach to protect his 

spine in this position. 

This may seem confusing 

at first, but it doesn’t 

have to be. Physical 

therapists are movement 

specialists. We can help

scams where criminals try 

to trick consumers into 

sending them money by 

pretending to be someone 

they are not. The “grandparent 

scam” is one type

Greenhouse: Can medical cannabis be a benefit to one’s health? 

For those who don’t know what Greenhouse 

is, Greenhouse is a medical cannabis

with medical cannabis 

The effectiveness of cannabis as an analgesic 

and pain reliever continues to be 

proven. It can also be used to reduce the 

use of pain medications: A recent study 

in the Journal of Pain found that patients 

who use cannabis for chronic pain show a 

64% lower rate of opioid use. 

The state of Illinois has two programs 

that enable access to medical cannabis. 

The Medical Cannabis Pilot Program 

allows patients to receive medical cannabis 

if they have been diagnosed with one 

of 41 approved conditions. Included in 

the list are cancer, agitation of Alzheimer’s, 

rheumatoid arthritis, PTSD, fibromyalgia

clothes dryer vent 

is fire hazard

Most people know they 

need to clean out their 

dryer lint tray between 

each cycle, but what lurks 

behind the wall is just as 

important for safety and 

avoiding fire traps, as well 

as fully efficient dryer performance. 

Joe Enzenberger, 

owner of Dryer Vent 

Wizard, opened his New 

Lenox-based business in 

2009. 

Lint is the villain, which 

is lint that has been allowed 

to build up and linger too 

long in the dryer exhaust 

vent. It is estimated by the 

U.S. Consumer Product 

Safety Commission and 

the U.S. Fire Administration 

that 15,500 fires associated 

with clothes dryers 

occur annually. These fires 

account for an average of 

20 deaths, 370 injuries and 

more than $88 million in 

property damage. “Failure 

to clean the dryer vent” 

was the leading factor cited 

in U.S. Fire Administration 

reports. 

“It is something very 

few people know about or 

think about,” said Enzenberger, 

whose company 

specializes in dryer vent 

cleaning, repair, alteration 

and installation. “It is 

the leading cause of dryer 

fires.” 

Lint accumulation also 

can cause dryers to stop 

working or to work inefficiently. 

A dryer vent 

clogged with lint can add 

as much as $18 to $24 per 

month to energy costs. 

“Improper venting 

causes problems, as well,” 

he said. “The dryer exhaust 

duct and connections 

should be made of rigid 

metal or semi-rigid metal 

and secured with metal 

heat-resistant tape rather 

than duct tape. I often find 

plastic or foil accordiontype 

material, which can 

easily trap lint and is more 

susceptible to kinks and 

crushing.” 

Warning signs include: 

• Clothes are taking more 

than one cycle to dry, especially 

jeans & towels. 

• No lint visible on lint 

screen. 

• Dryer repeatedly stops 

during a cycle. 

• Clothes have moldy 

smell after dry cycle. 

• Clothes are very hot after 

a dry cycle. 

• The top of your dryer hot 

to the touch while running. 

• There’s excess lint left on 

your clothing. 

“This has been a consumer 

education process, 

but it’s hard to get the 

word out,” Enzenberger 

said. “Most don’t call until 

they have a serious problem 

with their dryer.” 

He suggests people 

treat clothes dryers as a 

household item in need of 

regular maintenance. Consumers 

can protect dryer 

performance and promote 

safety by cleaning the lint 

screen between each use, 

ensuring the connection 

between the dryer and 

wall is made of compliant 

material and remains 

unkinked, and having the 

dryer exhaust duct cleaned 

regularly. Dryer manufacturers 

recommend inspection 

and cleaning at least 

annually. 

Now is the perfect time 

to have an inspection and 

cleaning of clothes dryers 

and dryer vent systems. 

Another important tip is 

to never let your clothes 

dryer run when you are out 

of the house or asleep.
