A letter from the Director
Hello Selah! The 2019 year has us off to a chilly and snowy start,
but we are looking forward to the upcoming events and recreational
opportunities the Parks and Recreation Department will be
bringing you! 2019 marks 100 years since incorporation in 1919
which means the City of Selah is excited to be celebrating our
Centennial year! So much has happened since then, and we are
looking forward to featuring our town’s history throughout the
year and in our official Centennial Celebration on April 3rd at the
Selah Civic Center. Our Centennial theme will be woven into
each city-wide event as we decorate the town with Centennial
Celebrations. Big changes are going on in Selah this year –
Selah Community Days will see a change in location, SPRSA will
see their first year as managers of your new pool, and the Selah
School District is looking forward to breaking ground on the
new Kindergarten campus in April 2019. So grab a cup of coffee
and take your time reading through this brochure as you’ll find
plenty of information to keep you up to date on all the wonderful
things happening in our beautiful town!

A letter from the City of Selah Recreation Manager
The new Selah Aquatic Center is well underway and scheduled to be
completed by June 2019. In the past, the City of Selah operated the pool
during the summer months, meaning that memberships, daily passes,
programs, and pool employment were administered by the Selah Parks
and Recreation Department. With the recent demolition of the
J. Francis Pool, the City of Selah is no longer in the pool business.
The Selah Park and Recreation Service Area Board (SPRSA), (covers the
same geographical borders as the school district: approximately 27,000
residents) was created as a junior taxing district to collect taxes to pay
for the costs of constructing and operating the new aquatic center.
Construction for the new pool has been financed by a $6.2 million dollar
bond to be repaid over 20 years. A maintenance and operations levy to
be proposed by the SPRSA Board is expected later this year in order to
finance maintenance & operations of the new pool.
The City of Selah will no longer maintain, oversee, or operate the
Selah pool. The SPRSA is the governmental organization designated to
collect taxes in order to construct, manage and operate the pool, and
will operate, and oversee the facility. Please note that any and all
scheduling, reservations, memberships, daily or season passes, rentals,
lessons or questions will need to go to the SPRSA – see contact info
above.

A letter from the SPRSA Board President
Selah Community Members,
As we look forward to the completion of the new Selah Aquatic Center
in Summer 2019, I want to be sure you know the Selah Park & Recreation
Service Area Board. The Board is made up of seven community members
who volunteer their time to make sure the Selah community continues
to enjoy wonderful Aquatic facilities.
The Board is currently managing the construction of the Aquatic Center
and will manage operations at the facility in Summer 2019 - if the
ongoing fundraising efforts are successful. When the Selah Aquatic
Center Maintenance & Operations Levy failed by approximately 40 votes
in August 2018, the Board was left without money to operate the
Aquatic Center in 2019. The Board looks forward to putting an M&O Levy
on the ballot in 2019, so we can guarantee funding for operations at the
Selah Aquatic Center starting in 2020.
The Selah Park & Recreation Service Area Board meets regularly at
the Civic Center. Our meetings are open to the public. All are welcome!

A Note from the Recreation Coordinator: Due to the construction of the

at other locations in town, Selah Parks and Recreation will not have a
Fall Soccer Season. Instead, the department will run five, one day camps in
place of the season, wrapping up with a jamboree the final weekend.

Ballroom and Beyond Dance Class

Not just for seniors! All ages welcome!
Basic Ballroom and Beyond Dance Classes will teach introductory
ballroom footwork, framework, spins and turns to music of the 40’s
and 50’s. The six week program offers lessons in foxtrot, cha-cha, tango,
waltz and more. A dance partner is recommended, but not required.

City Centennial
April 3rd, 2019
April 3, 2019 marks 100 years to the day since
the town of Selah incorporated with
63 unanimous votes. Since then Selah has
grown into one of the most desirable places to live in the Yakima Valley.
Join us on April 3rd from 5:30pm - 8:30pm at the Selah Civic Center to
celebrate Selah’s birthday. This free family event will showcase a visual
history of Selah, including a slide show and a Centennial dedication from
Mayor Raymond. Enjoy free ice cream from Kings Scoop, and pastries
and refreshments from Nana Kate’s.

Hot Rods on 1st Street - June 22, 2019
Hot Rods on First Street is going into its 3rd year and continues to be
one of the fastest growing car shows in the Yakima Valley. This year,
the car show will feature Selah’s Centennial Year and include the addition
of a special 1919 class and award. You won’t want to miss this free
family event as we fill First Street with all the classic hot rods, motorcycles,
and trucks as they arrive from all over the state and beyond. This year’s
show will feature a Poker Walk, new awards and prizes, and a Chili Picnic.

Selah Independence Day Celebration
July 4, 2019
Selah’s biggest event of the year is back in full force for 2019! We are
thrilled to be hosting live music, local vendors, outstanding food, local
breweries and wineries, and children’s activities! Join us at Carlon Park
from 3:00pm to dusk when we launch the fireworks! This small town
event is our most popular of the year and one you won’t want to miss.

Selah Base Race - September 14, 2019
Selah’s annual support our troops event is back again! You have plenty
of time to train all year for this family friendly 5k or half marathon. Enjoy
beautiful scenery as you run through the farmlands of Selah, up to –and
through- the Yakima Training Center and back to Carlon Park. Come
support your runner, or run yourself! Food and entertainment will be
available after the 5K. Proceeds from this race will go to The Soldiers
Project and United Through Reading.

Selah Christmas Celebration
December 6, 2019
The Civic Center will open its doors again after the Lighted Parade for
the Selah Christmas Celebration. Come inside for some warm beverages
and treats, free kids Christmas crafts, free pictures with Santa,
local craft vendors, and a Christmas movie. Doors will open after the
parade until 8:00pm.

A letter from the Community Days Association President!
Selah Community Days is excited for the new construction of the
Lince Kindergarten wing and the Selah Aquatic Center. These additions
located at Lince field next to Wixson park have created an opportunity
for the Community Days Board to find a new venue for the century
celebration.
This year Selah Community Days will be in the parking lot of
Carlon Park, located at 300 E Goodlander Rd. We will open on Friday
May 17th through Sunday May 19th. We will kick off Friday night with
our traditional car show. See a list of events happening on stage during
the festival on our website at www.selahdays.com
One of Selah’s favorite traditions is the Community Days Parade.
This will also see a change of direction but not location. All participants
will stage at Jim Clements and 5th where we have de-staged in the
past. Check in will be in located in that same vicinity. Tree Top has
acres of black top so all our parade participants can stage in one location.
The parade will head NORTH down Jim Clements to N. Wenas and end
at Goodlander. See you there!

2A State Softball Tournament- May 24-26th, 2019
Organizers: Washington Interscholastic Activities Association
Selah is proud to host the 2A State Softball Tournament at Carlon Park
again in 2019. Come down and support the Selah Vikings on May 24th
at Carlon Park for opening Ceremonies and the best 2A high school
softball teams in the state. This highly competitive weekend will be one
you won’t want to miss.

Where everyone, regardless of age or ability, can play!
Selah’s Volunteer Park is catching the eye of visitors, city leaders, and
government officials from all over the State of Washington. Presented
as the featured project at the January 2018 Recreation and Conservation
Office board meeting in Olympia, Volunteer Park is an all-inclusive park
fit for any age and any ability to join in collaborative and creative play.
The whole park – and all its components – is ADA accessible so those
with learning or physical disabilities are no longer restricted by surfacing
or space or height. If you haven’t seen it yet, pack up the kids and take
a trip to 116 Merinda Dr in Selah and check out the fun. Bring a picnic
and enjoy the sitting areas, your walking shoes to get some exercise
on the paved walking path, and a Frisbee for the nearby green space
next to the playground. The City of Selah is excited to add new features
and landscaping over the next few years as we continue to make this an
unforgettable destination park.
