Keep Calm and Lead On!
The Vermont Coalition for Disability Rights is gearing up
for Disability Awareness Day on Wednesday, February 27
under the Golden Dome. The theme this year is citizen participation,
and advocates will be urging peers and legislators
to “Keep Calm and Lead On!” This event is a nod to the late
Justin Dart Jr., known as the “godfather of the Americans with
Disabilities Act.”
VCDR President Sarah Launderville said, “This is one of
my favorite days of the year, where people with disabilities
from across the state come and meet with lawmakers, connect
with one another and are part of the political process. The
experiences of people with disabilities are important for lawmakers
to hear about firsthand. The stories will leave a lasting
impression, which in turn will lead to laws that are inclusive
and thoughtfully crafted as legislators connect to the lives of
people with disabilities.”
A highlight of the day will be a keynote address by Patrick
Standen. He will deliver a speech entitled, “A Short History of
a Very Long Problem: Disability and Discrimination.” Standen
is an author, teacher, and activist who teaches philosophy at
Saint Michael’s College and medical ethics at the University
of Vermont. He also serves as president of the Northeast
Disabled Athletic Association, a nonprofit organization that
provides athletes with physical disabilities competitive and
recreational sporting opportunities. Standen is a pioneer in
adaptive sports and is a competitive athlete in a number of
sports including biathlon, Nordic sit skiing, sled hockey, and
sailing.

for graduates of the 2019 Vermont Leadership Series,
which trains Vermonters with developmental disabilities, and

Mountaineers to be Honored
at Hot Stove Banquet
With the Hot Stove Banquet quickly approaching in less
than a month, the Mountaineers would like to highlight those
that will be honored at the dinner on March 23! Mountaineer
volunteers Brian Murphy and Abbie Lever, along with former
Mountaineer and MLB player Michael Brady, will all be honored
at the event.
Brian Murphy has served in many roles over the last 8 years
including team photographer, baseball card co-designer, and
as a host family. Abbie Lever, meanwhile, has hosted 18 players
in the last four years!
Michael Brady is a current free agent, having last played
for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2017 and with their AAA
affiliate, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox, in 2018. A graduate
of the University of California, Berkeley, and a 24th round
selection in the 2009 Major League Baseball draft by the
Florida Marlins, Brady played for the Vermont Mountaineers
during 2006 and 2007. Brady made his MLB debut in June
2017 with the Oakland Athletics.

Washington County Receives
$11,512 in Four Spark! Connecting
Community Grants for Local
Projects
Four nonprofit organizations in Washington County
received a total of $11,512 in Spark! Connecting Community
grants from the Vermont Community Foundation for local
projects. One of the competitive grant programs at the
Community Foundation, Spark! Connecting Community puts
building and nurturing community front and center. The
Foundation aims to support the work happening throughout
Vermont’s 251 towns that builds social capital. These grants—
where a small amount can make a big difference—are intended
to light the spark that keeps Vermonters healthy and happy.
The Community Foundation awarded a total of $80,402.16
in Spark! Connecting Community grants to 28 nonprofit organizations
for local projects in communities across the state,
including some nonprofits that serve residents in multiple
counties. These awards were given out through grant rounds
held in late 2018.
“Our SPARK! Connecting Community grants are designed
to increase social capital—that value which creates resilience
and cohesion,” says Vermont Community Foundation Vice
President for Grants and Community Investments Sarah
Waring. “When communities across the state build this social
capital, and actively reach out to include all members, we
know that we are helping to resolve the opportunity gap in
Vermont. The grantee projects from 2018 exemplify creative
and effective strategies to do just that.”
Nonprofits interested in applying for the next round of
Spark! Connecting Community grants are encouraged to visit
vermontcf.org/spark for more information. The deadline for the
first of three grant rounds in 2019 is 5:00 p.m. on March 19.

Grants in Washington County
The Children’s Room received $3,000 to promote family
wellness by providing a free space for new parents and caregivers
to gather, build social bonds, and engage in programming
that focuses on positive social interactions between
baby and caregiver.
Good Beginnings received $3,000 to establish a monthly
evening get-together aimed at connecting working families
with babies with peer support to help navigate the challenges
of being a new parent.
Moretown Elementary School received $3,000 to support
free parenting workshops that facilitate conversations on challenging
topics specifically identified by the community.
Town of Middlesex “What’s Next Middlesex?” Committee
received $2,512 to support community meetings that will
engage residents in planning for community identified projects
in support of Middlesex’s cultural and economic future.
