10 March 2019 ASIA www.theasianindependent.co.uk Delhi to install hydraulic lifts in 1,000 standard floor CNG buses New Delhi : Taking a step towards making public transport accessible to all, the Delhi Cabinet on Friday approved the installation of hydraulic lifts in 1,000 standard floor CNG buses in the city. The Cabinet, in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, approved a proposal of the Department of Transport for reimbursement of incremental cost for fitment of hydraulic lifts in 1,000 standard floor CNG-propelled buses to the concessionaires. "Sufficient modes of public transport are the only way to reduce air pollution in Delhi and bring down the number of vehicles on the roads to reduce congestion," the government said in a statement. "The technology of fitment of lifts in standard floor buses is new to India. However a prototype of buses with hydraulic lifts for wheelchairbound commuters has been prepared," the statement added. The cabinet approved the proposal to allow reimbursement of the overall cost of fitment of lifts on 1,000 buses, at a benchmark cost of Rs 3,63,396 per bus, amounting to a total of Rs 36,33,96,000 to the concessionaires, it said. "The reimbursement of the cost shall be made to the concessionaires, at the time of actual induction of buses subject to a supplementary agreement to be executed by the concessionaire with the department about the recovery of expenses incurred by government after taking into account the depreciation factor in the eventuality of termination of agreement," it added. The decision to install hydraulic lifts in standard floor buses has been taken following the directions from the Supreme Court and the Delhi High Court, it said. The Delhi government made a promise to bear the installation cost of lifts in 1,000 buses before the Supreme Court. Delhi Assembly passes 2019-20 Budget New Delhi : The Delhi Assembly on Thursday passed by a voice vote the Rs 60,000 crore budget, fifth of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, for 2019-20. Tabled on Tuesday by Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia, the budget outlay was two times the first one presented by the AAP in 2014-15. Education once again received the major share, which was 13.21 per cent higher than the Budget Estimate (BE) of Rs 53,000 crore in 2018-19. Speaking at the motion of thanks, Sisodia also the Finance Minister, said he took "personal interest in supervising a makeover of school education in Delhi in the past four years as the Education Minister." He also shared a four-minute video on the transformation in government schools since the AAP came to power. "This video should be shown throughout the country. I had asked the officials to show it in cinema halls and television channels in Delhi. But the Education Department officers had denied permission in writing, saying how could they believe the video showed the transformation in Delhi schools," Sisodia said. Pointing at the Bharatiya Janata Party MLAs, Sisodia said: "They have intentionally got such officers posted in the Delhi government." Speaker Ram Niwas Goel later said a special committee will be formed to look into the matter. Hailing the budget, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said it was for everyone and dedicated to the soldiers. Anti-terrorism protest at UN demands action against Pakistani terror sponsors, JeM chief United Nations : Members of the Indian community and international supporters have held a protest outside the UN headquarters demanding that the international organisation act against Pakistani leaders abetting terrorism and impose an arms embargo on Islamabad. The protest on Sunday by about 400 people also included concerned citizens from the US, Bangladesh, Caribbean countries, Sri Lanka and Israel, as well as from Pakistan's Balochistan province. The protesters held up signs listing various terrorist attacks around the world linked to Pakistan -- from Pulwama to New York's Times Square, and from Mumbai to London, and the Pakistani military's atrocities during Bangladesh's War of Independence. Their posters also listed terrorist organisations like the Al Qaeda, Lashkare-Taiba, Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM), Haqqani Network, Taliban, Laskshar-e- Omar, Sipah-e-Sahaba that are based in Pakistan and operate internationally. A memorandum from the protesters to the UN said the world body should declare Pakistan a global terrorist state and JeM leader Masood Azhar an international terrorist and impose sanctions on them. As a member of the Security Council, China has been protecting Azhar and has vetoed efforts by other members to add him to the list of global terrorists so he would face international sanctions. The JeM claimed responsibility for the suicide bombing in Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir on February 14 which killed 40 Central Reserve Police Force personnel. The memorandum also asked the UN to impose an arms embargo on Islamabad and financial and travel sanctions on Pakistani political and military leaders involved in protecting and aiding terrorist organisations. www.theasianindependent.co.uk NEWS March 2019 11 Air Force doesn't count casualties: IAF chief Coimbatore : Amidst a raging controversy over the damage inflicted on the Jaish-e- Mohammad (JeM) terror camp in Balakot, IAF chief B.S. Dhanoa on Monday said his force does not count human casualties but the airstrike had hit the "target". "The Indian Air Force is not in a position to clarify the number of casualties. The government will clarify that. We don't count human casualties. We do not count how many people were dead. We count what targets we have hit or not. We hit our target. The air force doesn't calculate casualty numbers. The government does that," he told the media here. "The target has been clearly amplified by the Foreign Secretary in a statement. If we plan to hit the target, we hit the target. Otherwise why would he (Pakistan Prime Minister) have responded. If we dropped bombs in the jungles why would he respond," Dhanoa said in his first public remarks on the February 26 air force operation as a consequence of the February 14 Pulwama attack in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed. There has been a controversy over the number of people killed in the attack on the JeM camp in Balakot. While officially no figures have been given, BJP President Amit Shah claimed in Ahmedabad on Sunday that more than 250 terrorists were killed in that airstrike. Union Minister S.S. Ahluwalia had said that the Balakot strike was to convey a message that India has the capacity to strike deep inside enemy lines and was not intended to inflict any human casualties. The date and timing for the opening was announced on the occasion of Maha Shivratri at Omkareshwar temple, Ukhimath in Rudraprayag district, which is also the winter sojourn of the Kedarnath idols. Amid chanting of vedic hymns and sounds of conches, the priests announced the muhurat. "The Kedarnath temple will reopen at 5.35 a.m. on May 9," an official of the Badrinath-Kedarnath temples said. The muhurat for the reopening of the Badrinath temple has already been announced, which is on May 10.
