Fractured Landscape<br />

ICONOCLAST - Central Park<br />

Redesign Competition<br />

In the wake of a fictional eco-terrorism attack, Central<br />

Park as we know it ceases to exist. Trees and plant life<br />

have died off within a week, and the landscape is a shell<br />

of what it had been previously. We are challenged to<br />

create a new landscape, to bring back the identity of<br />

Central Park and it’s significance within the Manhattan<br />

borough and New York City as a whole.<br />

My proposal extends the uniform city grid into the new<br />

park, abstracting and deforming as connections are<br />

made to other entrances. From there, the ground is<br />

split and extruded, creating a fractured landscape that<br />

introduces new activity into the city. Outdoor rappelling<br />

and climbing are now available as recreation, as are<br />

more conventional methods of entertainment such as<br />

walking your dog, people watching, and throwing a<br />

frisbee.<br />

Pulling the ground up creates a terraced effect, with<br />

different levels creating more segmented public spaces<br />

meant to be shared by fewer groups of people at a time.<br />

By adding the vertical to the new Central Park, eye level<br />

is now above the treeline and at the same height as<br />

roofs of 6 or 7 story walkups, common sights through<br />

all of Manhattan. This new perspective on the city allows<br />

for the sharing of views that only select buildings on<br />

the North end of the Park typically receive, giving these<br />

views to all of the millions of yearly park visitors, instead<br />

of just a handful of New Yorkers.<br />

For Central Park to remain such a prominent New York<br />

icon in the aftermath of an eco-terrorism attack, it needs<br />

to pave the way for what a modern park is. By raising<br />

the ground plane above the tree line, and providing for<br />

new activities not conventionally seen in parks, Central<br />

Park can once again be the standard by which all public<br />

parks are compared.<br />

Race to Zero Competition<br />

From 2014 to 2018, the U.S. Department of Energy ran<br />

a design competition for students, challenging teams to<br />

design structures of varying programmatic requirements<br />

that resulted in net zero buildings. The team I was on,<br />

Z-Haus OTR, consisted of 4 architecture students and<br />

3 architectural engineering students, and was the only<br />

team from the University of Cincinnati that progressed<br />

to finals presentation in Golden, Colorado.<br />

We partnered with a local non-profit, Cincinnati Center<br />

City Development Corporation (3CDC), to choose an<br />

appropriate site, and settled on 1531 Pleasant St., located<br />

in Over-the-Rhine (OTR), a neighborhood that has<br />

seen large scale revitilization since 2000. With public<br />

transit providing quick access to all of Cincinnati just a<br />

block away, the local farmer’s market a 5 minute walk<br />

away, and a plethora of historic buildings and new<br />

developments within a mile radius, we knew this would<br />

be the perfect location to begin design.<br />

As one of the New York Times’ “52 Places to Go in 2018,”<br />

and as a city that is a hotspot for startups, we knew<br />

our target audience would be for a young family, with<br />

1-2 children. We then strived to design the interior with<br />

comfort and a healthy mix of private and public spaces<br />

in mind, while relying on the fabric of the surrounding<br />

buildings to drive a common language for the exterior.<br />

Cincinnati, as a city, has a fairly uniform look. With new<br />

developments straying from the typical Italianate and<br />

Germanic architecture, various groups have been calling<br />

for a return to the older styles. The OTR Foundation<br />

was publishing a set of guidelines as we were starting<br />

our initial designs, guidelines that called for, among<br />

others, primary use of brick on the exterior, a primarily<br />

vertically-oriented facade, and a relative uniformity<br />

in height between new developments and existing<br />

buildings.<br />

Wanting to somewhat conform to these new guidelines,<br />

my team performed glazing optimization studies using<br />

Sefaira and Sketchup, finding that a 30-40% surfaceto-glazing<br />

ratio would provide the most optimal light<br />

against loss of energy through the panes. Keeping<br />

in mind the emphasis on the vertical, 3 floors were<br />

required to fit the program while simultaneously<br />

allowing for a large surface area to place windows.<br />

Along with the above surface-to-glazing studies, the<br />

team also studied how overall form would impact<br />

energy loss, and found that a “deep-L,” as we called<br />

it, would give us the required square footage, while<br />

maintaing the architectural look stressed by the OTR<br />

Foundation and be remniscent of other similar floor<br />

layouts in the surrounding streets.<br />

I spent my first two co-ops in Cincinnati, OH, working<br />

at K4 <strong>Architecture</strong>. During my first semester of work,<br />

I spent most of my time on a school renovation and<br />

addition in Kentucky. The majority of the program was<br />

adding a gymnasium with auxiliary spaces (a fitness<br />

center, concessions, and running track) as well as a<br />

daycare and media center. On this project, I touched<br />

a little bit of everything, from construction details to<br />

construction administration, as well as preliminary<br />

research and sketches for contractors. This project is<br />

currently under construction, with scheduled completion<br />

at some point in 2019.<br />

My second semester of work with K4 was spent working<br />

primarily on a series of projects for a chain of shops in<br />

Ohio. The chain was looking to rebrand and, depending<br />

on the location, would rebuild or build new, do a full<br />

interior gut and renovation, or just a remodel of graphics<br />

and some equipment. Specifically, I worked on three of<br />

the renovation projects, creating a majority of the base<br />

drawings for construction as well as some detail work.<br />

My final co-op was spent in San Francisco, CA, working<br />

with Jackson Liles <strong>Architecture</strong>. While there, I got<br />

the opportunity to work on a number of various size<br />

projects, from design development on a preschool to<br />

design development and renderings on a new shipping<br />

facility for the Bay Area. Additionally, I assisted with<br />

preliminary code review and schematic design for a<br />

client looking to expand on their current site.<br />
