CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY CHOIR
SINGS MUSIC OF OUR TIME
On Thursday 21 March (19.30) at
St Bride’s Church, Fleet Street, one of
Cambridge University’s most recorded
choirs, the Chapel Choir of Selwyn
College will perform a captivating
concert. Selwyn will be joined by Onyx
Brass ‘the classiest brass ensemble in
Britain’ (Gramophone) and organist
Simon Hogan. This concert, Music of
our Time, launches JAM’s 2019 season.
‘JAM concerts are fresh, energised
and surprising. The combination of
amazing performance spaces, aweinspiring
musicians and head-turning
composition is very potent. A JAM
experience is unrelentingly exciting and
always enjoyable.’ – Audience
The dramatic sea-churning The Fifth
Continent by Paul Patterson and Ben
Kaye (JAM commission 2005) describing
the mysteries of Kent’s Romney Marsh
headlines the evening. This magical work
starts with all the performers offstage;
space and physical movement are used
as an integral part of the musical
structure. A sense of boundless mystery
prevails, encompassing a huge range of
extremes, from the dark and austere, to
the serene and tranquil via storms of
violent winds and high seas. Performers
will include internationally renowned
countertenor, Andrew Watts, (Royal Opera
House (London), Paris Opera, La Scala
(Milan)) who premiered the work in 2005.
Since, The Fifth Continent is JAM’s most
successful commission with over forty
performances, enjoying rapturous
applause and international broadcast.
Songs from the Marshes by Rory
Boyle (JAM commission 2018) will be
programmed with The Fifth Continent.
This is a collection of modern folk
songs based on subjects of a timeless
nature which hark back to an earlier era.
The songs deal with love, death, war,
ghosts and nature all relating to
communities living near the sea.
Premiered last July by BBC Singers and
broadcast live on Radio 3, this work
receives its London premiere in this
concert.
Six further new pieces of vivid, vibrant
music by Phillip Cooke, Steven Nunes,
David Nunn, Richard Peat, Helen Roe and
Frederick Viner showcase the great pool of
talent working in the UK today.
