FAST TIPS to Thaw Frozen
When temperatures drop, frozen pipes can slow even the most efficient home.
If toilets don’t refill after flushing, or faucets aren’t flowing, it may be time to
thaw your pipes with these quick tips:
Shut off the water line and inspect visible plumbing
lines in exterior walls or crawl spaces.
If the frozen pipe is accessible, use indirect heat to
warm the area gently. Try a space heater, a hair
dryer, or heat lamp.
3 | Winter 2019
For inaccessible lines or possible burst
pipes, call your Horizon plumbing
team for 24/7 emergency service.
Once thawed, allow a small
trickle of water to flow
continuously during extreme
cold. The minimal cost of extra
water is tiny in comparison
to a burst pipe.
DID YOU SNOW?
The world’s fastest snow sled was clocked at 134.368
km/h (83.49 mph). UK TV host Guy Martin set this record
on January 10, 2014, in Grandvalira, Andorra.
Winter Safety Tips
Whether you’re at home, or on the go, stay safe this winter with these tips:
Show Your Hands: While gloves look great, mittens
provide the most warmth by allowing fingers to touch
and share heat.
Say No To Bulky Coats In Car Seats: Puffy winter coats
prevent car seat harnesses from securing children. Use
blankets and turn up the heat to keep kids comfy.
Look for Lines: When venturing out after a snowstorm,
keep an eye out for downed power lines and report
them promptly.
Top Up Your Tank: Keep a full tank of gas to avoid ice
in the tank or fuel lines.
Skip The Pockets: Keep your hands out of pockets
while walking on ice or snow to reduce the risk of
losing your balance or falling. Wear mittens instead!
Shovel Healthy: Warm up muscle groups before
shoveling snow. Gentle stretching or a quick walk
can help get you ready for the task ahead.
Your Fail-Proof
Garbage Disposal Guide!
When snack time ends, make sure clean-up
goes smoothly at the sink.
NEVER wash grease, oil, starchy food waste,
bones, seeds, or pits down the drain.
Use cold water when running the disposal.
Hot water can melt foods and allow waste
to cling to the sides.
Run your disposal regularly! Turn the unit on
(with water) every few days to combat rust,
corrosion, and hardening food waste.
Check Into The World-Famous Icehotel
The world’s first icehotel opened in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden, in 1990,
following a popular 1989 ice art exhibition. Every year, crews use
thousands of tons of local ice and snow to build a bar, church,
main hall, reception area, plus about 100 rooms for guests.
Walls, furniture, décor, and even glasses are made of ice.
Unfortunately, suites don’t include bathroom facilities
or electrical sockets.
Q: What did one glacier say to the other?
A: ICE to meet you!
DID YOU
SNOW?
Richard Daly holds the Guinness World Record
title of World’s Fastest Ice Carver. In 2013, Daly
created 60 sculptures from 18,000 pounds of ice
in just two hours, 52 minutes and 12 seconds!
Q: Why do reindeer have fur coats?
A: Because they look silly in snow suits.
Q: What is the Yeti’s favorite dish?
A: CHILLI and icebergers!
Power Through Winter
Before you turn on an electric blanket or space heaters, check out these simple rules for electrical safety.
Cracks"
Keep space heaters at least three feet away from combustible
materials, including bedding, drapes, or furniture.
Q: What do you call a Yeti
with a six-pack?
A: An abdominal snowman!
Check appliance cords for cracks, charring,
fraying or other signs of damage. DO NOT USE
damaged items – replace immediately!
Never fold electric blankets when in
use! Folded or tucked-in blankets could
overheat and cause fires.
Cover exposed electrical outlets with
childproof caps to keep little ones safe.
Mark Your
Calendars!
February first appeared on the Roman calendar in 713 BC.
Its name originates in the Latin word februa which means
“purification rites.” When Julius Caesar remade the Roman
calendar, the month was assigned 28 days during normal years
and 29 days during leap years which occurred every 4 years.
