<strong>Difference</strong> <strong>between</strong> <strong>Bars</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>Pubs</strong><br />

<strong>Bars</strong>, pubs, taverns, inns, alehouse <strong>and</strong> bars by many other names are places where you can go to have a<br />

drink. In some of them, you can have some snacks, full meals or even catch some sleep. If you want to<br />

know what makes them different from each other, we are going to give you a very quick run down.<br />

<strong>Bars</strong><br />

<strong>Bars</strong> are just that a BAR, this is a place where you get drinks served to you by a bartender. The reason<br />

why they are called bars is because they have a bar.<br />

Pretty much any establishment with a bar you can walk up to can be called a bar. In the USA you find<br />

most restaurants have bars as well, this is great if you have to wait for a table. So when they name the<br />

restaurant they normally add bar as well, so people know they can just go have a drink at the bar. Notch<br />

<strong>Bars</strong> are known for places you can get a drink, cocktails or maybe a fine wine or whiskey. back in the day<br />

bars only served bar snacks, but due to dem<strong>and</strong> most now have full kitchens that serve full meals just<br />

like restaurants. So Now the word Bar is just a general term for a place to get a drink.


<strong>Pubs</strong> - Public House<br />

<strong>Pubs</strong> or Public House are generally places where you can go after having a tough day at work, to relax,<br />

let it all go, have some drinks <strong>and</strong> maybe some dinner while listening to music. But the history of the<br />

Pub stems back to the 5th century where Alehouses would put a green bush out the front when their<br />

brew was ready for people the taste.<br />

These became meeting places where town folk would meet <strong>and</strong> gossip <strong>and</strong> discuss.<br />

<strong>Pubs</strong> spreed across Engl<strong>and</strong>, Irel<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> other countries.<br />

Also, there’s another difference in the allowance of customers; kids are normally not allowed in bars,<br />

but you can go having a family dinner at a pub.<br />

Inn's <strong>and</strong> Taverns<br />

Inns <strong>and</strong> Taverns are pretty much just <strong>Pubs</strong> with Accommodation, Inn’s where for travelers who where<br />

seeking lodging. These inns where normally in country towns or on highways. You will normally find old<br />

inns are very large <strong>and</strong> gr<strong>and</strong>er buildings as they where built for lodging.<br />

<strong>Pubs</strong> where alehouse, when they where built they where not designed around lodging.


Beer houses<br />

The English Beer house came about after a end to the Gin Craze when they introduced the Beer Act of<br />

1830 to stem the drunkenness of the cheaper Gin. A Beer house was where you got a license from the<br />

government so you could sell beer in your house you could even brew it your self to sell it. This took off<br />

within 8 years over 45000 had been built. The rule was that you could not sell spirits or Fortified wine.<br />

Hence the name Beer House.<br />

Lounges <strong>and</strong> Saloons<br />

It is funny because the modern lounges are normal chill <strong>and</strong> relaxed places but the history of the lounge<br />

runs back to the saloons that provided entertainment for there guests. This back in the day was more<br />

sinister then today’s karaoke. They had cabaret <strong>and</strong> strip shows.<br />

The modern day lounges more resemble an old days snug a more classy venue for more upper class<br />

patrons.<br />

Last but not least the Public bar<br />

The modern day public bar a Dive Bar. Public bars where dirt plan places to drink they didn’t have all the<br />

bells <strong>and</strong> whistles. The original ones had unfinished floors with saw dust to soak up the spit <strong>and</strong> spill<br />

from the night.


There where for the working class <strong>and</strong> that’s it.<br />
