Macedonia, of course, is a part of Greece, yet now, since I am following the nature and shape of the places geographically, I have decided to classify it apart from the rest of Greece and to join it with that part of Thrace which borders on it and extends as far as the mouth of the Euxine and the Propontis. The way women are treated with us at present is<br />
this—we huddle all our goods together, as the saying<br />
goes, within four walls, and then hand over the dispensing<br />
of them to the women, together with the<br />
control of the shuttles and all kinds of wool-work.<br />
Or again, shall we prescribe for them, Megillus, that<br />
midway system, the Laconian ? Must the girls<br />
share in gymnastics and music, and the women<br />
abstain from wool-work, but weave themselves<br />
instead a life that is not trivial at all nor useless,<br />
but arduous, advancing as it were halfway in the ,<br />
path of domestic tendance and management and<br />
child-nurture, but taking no share in military<br />
service ; so that, even if it should chance to be<br />
necessary for them to fight in defence of their city<br />
and their children, they will be unable to handle<br />
