Day 2 – Engagement inspections Quality engagement performance is the heartbeat of our practices and profession. During day 2 an overview of the ISAs will be given and practical tools will be made available to measure engagements against before considering them complete. The purpose role, focus and processes of the Regulator (where there is one), or the membership body who has a duty to monitor its members, will be discussed and engagement partners will learn how to avoid documentation and evidentiary mistakes. This session will have a lot of practical tips, and everyone will learn from each other, and with Ms. Marthie as an experienced inspector, with 18 years’ experience in engagement reviews. MEET THE FACILITATOR The workshop will be facilitated by Ms. Marthie Claassens - an independent, technical expert and experienced trainer who will deliver a practical; relevant, and quite engaging sessions. She is a Chartered Accountant from South Africa; CA (SA), and a Registered Auditor. She possess an LL.M. International Business Law (cum laude) (University of Liverpool); Post Graduate Diploma in Contract Law (with distinction)(UJ); Certified Trainer (with distinction) (Damelin); Higher Diploma in Company Law (Wits). Marthie is the founder and CEO of Protect- A-Director (Pty) Ltd where she is aiming of inter-connecting the risks and controls on a pragmatic level in the spheres of integrated reporting, regulatory audits, legal compliance, other assurance providers and , corporate governance. She is an advisor and supporter to any entity, in the public or private sector that strives to do the right thing for long-term sustainability. She also connects all these statutory and regulatory requirements to stakeholder relation optimization. Her passion is people development, and empowering professionals with practical knowledge by simplifying complex concepts. One of the outstanding assignments she has performed include: Professional audit firms, reviews and regulatory support. Marthie specialises in assisting Registered Auditors and Financial Reporting Professionals to comply with international standards, regulations and requirements from professional bodies, statutes and governance codes. She assists at the highest level of professional audit firms with practical quality assurance on audits and other professional assignments. She worked for the IRBA (Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors) and performed an estimated 600 practice reviews (inspections), where after she started her own consulting firm ‘Protect-A-Partner’ to assist professional bodies, auditors and accountants with technical matters. Her primary focus was the development of new products and innovative income generators to answer to a changing market, rapidly influenced by corporate collapses such as Enron, WorldCom and Parmalat. All product innovation and development at Protect-A-Partner was to answer to regulatory and statutory needs that were in existence and also evolving in the market. She designed and/or presented courses to the profession in Botswana, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, and South Africa on ISA, ISQC 1, professional standards and practical aspects of delivering quality assurance project. Protect-A-Partner was the first firm in Southern Africa to develop a fully compliant 4 www.icparwanda.com
ISQC 1 manual to the profession that was sold internationally. During 2015 she led a team to Nigeria for the World Bank to assess the quality of compliance with ISQC 1, ISA and other professional standards of audit firms in the country, to qualify for the auditing of World Bank capital projects. During 2012 she led a team to Zimbabwe to re-establish the Inspections function in the country, on behalf of the World Bank and the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors. She also designed a methodology for the auditing profession in Namibia to ensure that they adhere to the IFAC Statements of Member Obligations. She also led teams for numerous years to conduct these inspections and assessment. During 2016 she was a technical advisor to the team at Protect-A-Partner on the East African Community’s (EAC) professional project dealing with “Public Finance Management Coordination and Harmonization Project Consultants: Auditors Quality Control”. She has recently been part of a World Bank team that performed the second Report on the Observance of Standards and Codes (‘ROSC’) ROSC: Accounting and Auditing in Zambia. She was responsible for areas dealing with Audit Regulation, Quality Assurance and Public Oversight; Audit Standard Setting; Review of Regulatory Processes and Findings on Compliance with Standards; among others assignments. She has been instrumental to assist various professional bodies in the auditing and accounting profession to ensure highest compliance with international standards. During 2017 and 2018 Marthie completed a project for the Pan African Federation of Accounts for all their member countries that were presented in Kenya, Senegal and Nigeria to delegates of 45 African countries, of which the outputs and outcomes were: She has recently presented training on auditing standards, ISQC 1, the IESBA Code of Ethics and documentation on audit engagements to auditors in Malawi, and is on her way to present training in similar topics to the profession in Mauritius. Most recently Marthie trained up a full team of inspectors for the Zimbabwean Public Accountants and Auditors Board, to ensure that the country can adhere to their IFIAR, AFIAR, IFAC membership obligations, and to enable the country to execute public protection mandates. She has been an EQCR and/or monitoring reviewer for many large entities such as Transnet, Eskom, MTN, fund managers, assets managers, wholesalers, investors, retailers, both listed and unlisted and private and public sector entities.
