Overtime winner caps highlightfilled
year for Highland Park Grey
Submitted Content
The Highland Park Giants
Grey JV squad won its division
championship in electrifying
fashion on Feb. 28 with a 3-2
overtime win over Lane Tech.
Grey capped a strong season
in which it won the Wright
Angle tournament in Madison,
Wisconsin; was runnerup in the
President’s Day Tournament;
finished third in the regular season
standings; and then won all
its playoff games to earn a place
in the championship game.
The game was originally
scheduled for Feb. 24. Late in
the second period, the power
went out at the rink, suspending
the game. Play resumed Feb.
28.
HPHS freshman Pierce Romo,
the league’s leading scorer,
and sophomore Sam Schlussel
scored goals in the second period
to force overtime.
After two minutes of overtime
play, freshman defenseman
Langston Knapp zapped a tapeto-tape
pass to sophomore center
Jack Broderick who lit the lamp
with a laser shot, leading to an
explosion of sticks and gloves
in the air and the HP Grey team
celebration.
Coach Brian Kelly summed
it up: “It will be something I’ll
never forget. From the tournament
win in Madison to the climatic
end, the season was truly
amazing. They took their share
of lumps that’s for sure, but
they worked through them as
a team. That’s what they were,
a team, it showed in the locker
room, on the ice and even out
to dinner.”
Sunset Valley Golf Club
wins facility award
Submitted by the Park District
of Highland Park
The Park District of Highland
Park was presented with the Illinois
Park and Recreation Association’s
(IPRA) Outstanding
Facility Award for the district’s
newly renovated Sunset Valley
Golf Club on Jan. 25.
The award was presented at
the IPRA annual business meeting
held at the Hyatt Regency
Hotel in Chicago. This is the association’s
top award presented
to one agency out of over 2,000
from across Illinois for outstanding
and unique achievements in
the design and development of
new or renovated parks and recreation
facilities.
The Park District of Highland
Park won the IPRA Outstanding
Facility Award for the renovation
of Rosewood Beach in
2016.
“We are very pleased to kick
off the new year with this significant
honor and recognition
from IPRA,” said Brian Kaplan,
President of the Board of Commissioners
for the Park District
of Highland Park. “It has been
extremely rewarding to work
cooperatively with our residents
and our dedicated staff to create
this one-of-a-kind facility for
our community.”
In August 2018, Sunset Valley
Golf Club re-opened to the
public after an extensive $7
million, 18-month renovation
to the 18-hole golf course and
clubhouse. The 98-year old club
has a new lease on life with a
distinctive British Heathlands
course design accommodating
every level of golfer with the
unique features unlike any other
golf course in the area and a new
clubhouse with striking views of
the course.
The project included a complete
renovation of all tees,
fairways, greens, bunkers as
well as overall infrastructure,
drainage and storm water management.
Unique features of the club
now include five sets of tees,
18 new green complexes that
give a variety of ways to attack
the pin locations, and native
fescue grasses that frame
each hole. Hole five and hole 13
were lengthened, hole four is a
picturesque peninsula outlined
with a new stone wall embankment,
and the fairway on hole 14
wraps around and connects with
the approach on hole 10’s green.
Each hole also features strategic
bunkering, and the course now
features a newly remodeled
clubhouse offering a classic
modern vibe with an expanded
golf shop, the new 13ninety restaurant
and bar, cozy lounge and
fireplace, and a large outdoor
patio with additional seating and
firepits.
The new course also features
state-of-the-art golf carts. Sunset’s
new high-efficiency, lithium
ion cart fleet drives with zero-emissions.
The carts feature
10-inch interactive GPS touch
screen monitors to enhance the
golfer experience including:
HD hole graphics so golfers can
visualize specifics of the location
of water hazards, bunkers
and pin placement; on-screen
pro tips; digital scorecard offers
email option; yardage to pin; 3D
hole flyover with full screen HD
video; food and beverage menus
and ordering.
In keeping with its legacy
as the course for all, the new
Sunset Valley is a participating
course in the Chicago District
Golf Association Youth
on Course program. The
program allows young golfers
ages 6 to 18 the opportunity to
play at the course for $5. To
take advantage of the Youth on
Course $5 rate, young golfers
should sign up for membership
at cdga.org.
