Smith Crossing to offer free memory care support groups on April 4 Southwest suburban families and caregivers of older adults living with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia are invited to a free support group in April at Smith Crossing in Orland Park. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. The hour-long gatherings at both life-plan communities will be open to questions and comments from the assembled group. After the meetings, light refreshments will be served. <strong>OP</strong>Prairie.com news the orland park prairie | March 21, 2019 | 23 FROM THE TINLEY JUNCTION Tinley Park High School band director named to Midwest Music Festival Hall of Fame Vince Aiello has been the band director of Tinley Park High School for more than two decades. And, for more than two decades, he has entered the band in the Midwest Music Festival, where the ensemble performs challenging pieces and more often than not finishes in the contest’s Top 5. All of that happened again in February, but this year’s event also featured a special touch: Aiello being named to the longrunning festival’s prestigious Hall of Fame. The recognition — which only has been extended to a small, accomplished set of directors — was due after Aiello’s many years of consistent excellence, said Mike Madonia, the festival’s long-time executive director. “He wants to get better all the time,” Madonia said. “He wants the band to get better all the time. He cares a lot about those kids. His groups are simply phenomenal.” Aiello, 53, was presented with the honor in front of family, friends, peers and, of course, his student-musicians. “My band kids were really rowdy, jumping up and down and cheering for me,” Aiello said. “That probably meant the most to me. They’re why I do it.” Madonia said Aiello’s approach to music and to teaching perfectly reflect what he has tried to accomplish with the festival over the decades. “I’m trying to teach them that nothing worthwhile is easy,” he said. “It’s going to take hard work, and if you’re not going to dedicate yourself to it, it won’t happen. FROM THE MOKENA MESSENGER Village holds annual Student Government Day More than 60 students from four schools participated in Student Government Day on March 13, hosted by the Village of Mokena. The tradition started more than 30 years ago and is used as a way to give young people handson experience of what it is, exactly, that local governments do for their towns. The morning started with a welcome from Mokena Mayor Frank Fleischer, followed by an overview of local government processes, which included a Q&A session with Village staff and students. Later that evening, Mokena Junior High School students met at Village Hall to rehearse and tape a mock board meeting, with students playing the roles of various staff, trustees and even the mayor. Samya Walker, an eighth-grader at MJH, portrayed the role of development director. She said she has an interest in getting involved in politics at some point in the future. “Yeah, I do, but probably a higher-up role,” Walker said. “I just picked any role for now, just to see how the government works, in general.” Fleischer said that the day was an opportunity for the children to become ambassadors for the Village. “They’re going to go home after the meeting [and tell] their parents what they learned today,” Fleischer said. “And, if they learned what happens in our community — what our public works department does, what our finance department does, what our police department does — they understand a little better what they’re paying taxes for. FROM THE LOCKPORT LEGEND LTHS grad excels on ice in first season at Robert Morris When Morgan Donchez attended Lockport Township High School, she did not flock to a lot of school social functions. “I didn’t have much of a social life in high school,” Donchez said. “I didn’t go to the social dances or anything. But I wouldn’t trade it.” Donchez, a 2018 LTHS graduate, would not trade her high school experience, because she was busy doing something else: playing hockey. She is still playing hockey now and excelling at it. Donchez just completed her freshman season as a starting left winger on the women’s hockey team at Robert Morris University in Chicago. Donchez not played but also was named the Central Collegiate Women’s Hockey Association’s Third Star for January. That is because “Doochie” registered five goals and five assists in six games during the month. That is not all she did in her freshman season on the team. She led the team, which finished 10- 19, with an average of 0.64 goals per game. “I was the second leading scorer as a freshman in the CCWHA,” Donchez said. When she was in grade school at Taft School in Lockport, she also played basketball, but there is nothing like hockey for her. “It’s just the feeling of purpose when you step out on the ice,” Donchez said of why she loves hockey. “Just that close-knit feeling with people who have the same goal as you and want to have that success with you. “I’ll just try to do better each year, on and off the ice. FROM THE FRANKFORT STATION St. Baldrick’s event continues tradition that started with Hope There were cheers, tears and a lack of hair March 10 at the sixth St. Baldrick’s head-shaving event held at Frankfort Black Belt Academy. Frankfort residents showed up at the academy to have their heads shaved, purchase baked goods and buy raffle tickets. The annual event benefits the St. Baldrick’s Foundation — a notfor-profit organization that funds childhood cancer research — and the families of area children and teens with cancer. Vicki Truesdale, of Frankfort, has organized the event for the past six years. She is a student and instructor at Frankfort Black Belt Academy, which donates its space every year to host the event. “Seven years ago, a sibling of a student at the academy was diagnosed with cancer and was going through treatment,” Truesdale said. “Her name is Hope. A couple of kids from the academy did an event getting their head shaved, so we decided to host an event here. St. Baldrick’s helps to raise funds for research and treatments, which is underfunded. FROM THE HOMER HORIZON LTHS boys water polo looks to make its mark after last season’s success Coming off one of — if not the best — seasons in its history, the Lockport Township boys water polo team knows it will be hard to have that level of success again this season. But the Porters are OK with that, as this year’s group will look to make its own mark and improve as the season progresses. “I’m really excited,” Lockport coach Joe Lewandowski said. “This [first week] offers just a glimpse of what we have. We graduated seven seniors from last season’s team, and [in the opener], we were excited to just get back in the water.” Lockport opened the season March 11 at home. The game was close into the third quarter, but in the end Metea Valley pulled away for an 11-7 victory. “This was their sixth game,” Lewandowski said of the Mustangs at that point. “We were just excited to be playing as a team. We have a lot of new guys, and our communication has to improve. We missed some marks, and that led to some missed shots and them getting some man-up opportunities.” Four seniors with experience return for Lockport. They are Michael Bates, Simon Harmata, Caleb Speechley and Tyler Thompson. Last year, Lockport lost 13-4 to Naperville Central in the title match of the Metea Valley Sectional. It was the first sectional final in five years for the Porters, who won their only sectional title and placed fourth in the state in 2012. The team still finished with a record of 27-5.
