In honour of
International Women’s
Day, Google today announced
the launch of 18
new Womenwill chapters
across Sub-Saharan Africa.
Womenwill is a Google
initiative to create economic
opportunity for women
everywhere, so that they
can grow and succeed.
Helping women make the
most of technology to build
skills, get inspired, and
connect with each other
through training, events
and advocacy, Womenwill
aims to drive conversations
promoting gender equality
to benefit everyone.
Speaking at the event,
Google Africa’s Brand &
Reputation lead,
Mojolaoluwa Aderemi-
Makinde said: “The gender
gap could be solved if
women have the same
access to resources and
skills acquisition sources as
men. This is why we’re
expanding the Womenwill
chapters in SSA and continuing
our focus on
diversity and gender equality
into 2019 and beyond.”
The 18 new chapters are
located across Sub-Saharan
Africa in cities including
Accra, Cape Town, Dar es
Salaam, Johannesburg,
Lekki and Onitsha. This
brings the total number of
chapters in Africa to 25,
with more to launch in the
coming weeks.
Today’s chapters are
being launched simultaneously
at events in Johannesburg,
South Africa,
Nairobi Kenya and Lagos,
Nigeria following a week in
which Digital Skills
Masterclasses were held at
Google launches 18 new
‘Womenwill’ chapters
various locations in these
countries, involving some
5000 women.

IWS: Creating enabling environment

As Mrs Nkoli Ogbolu
received the mantle of
leadership as the 62nd president
of International Women’s
Society, Nigeria, she restated
the association’s commitment
to continue to create an enabling
environment for the development
of women.
Speaking at her investiture,
Nkoli Ogbolu, said that over
the last six decades, the International
Women’s Society, IWS
has doggedly marched
forward in the business of
clarity creating an enabling
environment for our targets,

girls, women, children and
youth, ensuring that those disenfranchised
and hurting, find
healing through different programmes.
Ogbolu noted that the clamour
for gender parity, gender
balance and balance for
better should not be lost on us
as we have just celebrated the
International Women’s Day
with striking a balance at
home, at work and in every
facet of our lives. This means
that we all must look out for
one another if we want life to
be purposeful, meaningful,
fruitful and fulfilling.
“We will enhance infrastructure
to cater to our targets. At
the end of this decade, we
should have earned it and
owned it fully as Nigeria’s
foremost indigenous charity
organisation.”

by members, friends
and associates of International

Nigeria, a social justice
non-governmental organisation
working to combat
poverty in Nigeria has
called on the Federal
Government to put policies
and systems in place to stop
tax abuses by multinational
corporations and Illicit
Financial Flows.
It also cautioned the FG to
reduce unfair tax burdens
on women; remove gender
bias and discrimination in
tax policies; increase allocation
of tax revenues for
gender responsive social
services and ensure tax and
fiscal policies recognise and
serve to represent, reduce
and redistribute unpaid
care work.
The Country Director of
the organisation, Mrs. Ene
Obi who stated this on
jobs. We have trained more
than 3 million people in
total, of which 48 per cent
are women.
“This year, we are playing
our part in the contribution
to women empowerment and
we will be expanding the
reach of our Grow with
Google programs in SSA to
focus on women empowerment
as a key pillar. We aim
to empower women with the
right skills, coaching,
mentorship and community
support to access opportunities,”
she said.
IWD: ActionAid calls on FG to engage in
‘progressive and transformative’ tax policies
•says Tax burden affects Women more in Nigeria
Thursday said: “Multinational
corporations are
systematically avoiding and
evading taxes, by abusing
weaknesses within the
national tax system and
these abuses comprise a
large part of Illicit Financial
Flows, IFFs, resulting in
hundreds of billions of
Naira in lost public revenues
every year. These
potential public revenues
could and should have been
used by government at all
levels to provide economic
and social services and
infrastructure that are urgently
needed to address
inequalities.
“However, instead of
improving legislation and
regulations, the Nigerian
government is conceding
more and more tax giveaways
in the form of tax
exemptions and incentives,
as well as scaling back
regulations with the alleged
intention of attracting
investment. At the same
time, government is introducing
copious austerity
measures and increasing
the tax burdens on the poor,
particularly on women,
which is in turn aggravating
the precarious social situation
of women in Nigeria.
“Amid poverty and heightened
levels of exposure to
violence and insecurity,
most women in excluded
communities across Nigeria
have poor access to food,
potable water and the
essential services they
need, such as reproductive
health services and social
amenities. These basic
amenities and services are
vital for women’s survival,
as well as empowering them
to lead productive and
meaningful lives,” Obi said.
