Dear Readers,
Since the last few decades Indonesia has emerged as one of main furniture
suppliers to the world market, especially as supplier of wood and rattan
furniture. Furniture products have significant contribution in foreign
exchange earned from exports of non-oil & gas products.
The development of Indonesian furniture industry has been supported by
huge resources of raw materials of wood and, especially, rattan. Indonesian
forests provides abundant of various species of tropical hardwoods as well
as softwoods. In addition, Indonesia is the largest producer of rattan in the
world.
Therefore, Indonesia has great a potential to further develop its furniture
industry. That’s why this Edition is promoting again Indonesian furniture
industry together with the suppliers that can be contacted by interested
overseas importers.

Wood and Rattan Furniture
Since the second half of 1970, Indonesia has aggressively
developed and promoted its furniture industry. The first large
furniture exhibition was organized in Jakarta in December
1975. The exhibition, called Indonesian Furni Fair, was
visited by hundreds of overseas buyers and importers.
Initiated by the National Agency for Export Development
(NAFED), Ministry of Trade, the exhibition has been
organized annually, and after three years the organizing of
the Furni Fair has been transferred to the Association of
Indonesian Furniture, ASMINDO. As Indonesian furniture
industry has rapidly developed, there have been many other
event organizers staged furniture exhibitions around the
year.
Indonesia produces furniture products made of wood,
rattan, and metal materials. Those products are usually
used in the offices, the kitchens, the bedrooms as well as
in the gardens or outdoor furniture. They include drawing
table, special furniture (with cases or drawers) for printing
works, other wooden furniture of a kind used in offices,
wooden furniture of a kind used in the kitchen, wooden
furniture of a kind used in the bedroom, and others.

Indonesia is rich with tropical wood species that support
the furniture industry. The popular wood species used in the
making furniture are, among others, Teak, Rubber wood,
“Sawo Kecik” (kind of sapodilla), “Nyatoh”, “Ramin”,
Mahogany, “Prupuk”, Ebony, “Sungkai”, “Keruing”, Pine,
“Agathis”, “Meranti”, Cananga, and Champac.
Other wood species can also be used for making furniture,
as long as they have characteristics that meet the furniture
requirements, e.g.:
a. Good performance of the surface (decorative)
b. Hard and durable (not easy to be destroyed by insect).
c The structure of the fiber is straight and long.
d. Easy to be processed and not easy to be cracked or
bended.

Centers of Production
Indonesian wooden furniture products are manufactured in almost every
provinces in Indonesia, Furniture with modern designs are mostly produced
in factories located in Jakarta and its surroundings and in other big cities like
Bandung (West Java), Semarang (Central Java), Surabaya (East Java), and
Medan (North Sumatra). In a village in South Jakarta, called Pondok Pinang,
there are numerous small and medium-sized industries that produce carved
wooden furniture. Most of the craftsmen came from Jepara, a town in Central
Java, famous as a center for carved wooden furniture. Jepara is surrounded by
villages with most of the people are involving in carved wooden furniture with
antique and modern designs, Solo, another big city in Central Java, also produces
carved wooden furniture. Some of the companies are run jointly by local people
and foreign businessmen. The latter play important role as technical advisors on
designs, marketing the products for exports, and provide capital to expense the
production.

Rattan Furniture
Rattan furniture products include tables, chairs, and other household products
made of rattan. As the largest producing country of rattan in the world, Indonesian
rattan furniture industry experiences a rapid development seen from kinds of the
product point of view as well as its contribution to revenues of non-oil exports.
In general, kinds of rattan furniture are as follows:
• Box-type goods, consisting of : chest, cupboard, cabinets, layer racks.
• Pedestal goods, such as products for guest room, bedroom, dining room,
chairs, tables.
• Small items, such as umbrella box, magazine box, sandal racks, etc.
• Other products, such as place for mirror, bed, room divider, etc.
Nationally, raw materials of rattan are spreading in 15 provinces with a capacity
of 687,000 tons per year, consisting of:
1. Group of rattan with large diameter: “Manau”, “Batang”, “Tohiti”,
“Semambu”, “Tabu-tabu” , “Ambulu”, and “Suti”.
2. Group of rattan with small diameter: “Sega”, “Pulut”, “Cacing”, “Jahab”,
“Air”, and “Dalu”.
Kinds of rattan mostly cultivated in Indonesia are: “Irit”, “Taman”, “Sega”, and
“Manau”.
The uses of rattan are vary, among others:
1. “Ketam” or round rattan, used for frame of chairs, tables, stands, umbrella
sticks, etc.
2. Rattan peel is used for webbing of mats, mattress, bags, baskets, etc.
3. Rattan core is used for various household articles.
4. The waste of rattan industry still can be used for material for fire crackers
industry, etc.
5. Rattan can be used for various luxurious purposes, such as luxurious furniture,
weaving products for household needs, as wall surface, decoration, isolator
against cold weather, plastics, and pulp.

The centers of production of rattan
furniture are found in Jakarta,
West Java, Central Java, East Java,
Kalimantan, Sumatra, and Sulawesi.
The most well-known production
centers of rattan furniture are found
in Cirebon Regency, especially in the
villages of Tegal Wangi and Plumbon.
In those villages we can find hundreds
of small and medium-sized industries
dealing with rattan furniture and
basketry works.
The standard of quality of rattan
furniture is generally known or can
be seen in the working process. The
traditional way of works will be
different in quality with semi-modern
works. Rattan furniture products are
mostly done by hand (manual). This
method is mostly used by craftsmen
and indigenous businessmen.
Meanwhile, rattan furniture products
are also made by using machine and
having designs suitable to local and
overseas consumers. The processing
is carried out based on modern
management and supported by
machine and modern equipment.
Until now, there is no special standard
of quality to be implemented in rattan
furniture products. However, the
exporter could describe detail on: form,
measurement, quality, raw material,
method of making process, and other
information required.
Export
Indonesia has emerged as one of the
main exporter of furniture products
in the world. In 2007, Indonesia was
the 18th largest exporter of furniture
products among other 230 exporting
countries in the world. Total export
value of Indonesian furniture in that
year reached US$ 1,198.9 million.
However, Indonesian export of
furniture products in 2008 valued
at US$ 1,905.8 million or slightly
declined by -0.69% compared to the
previous year.
There were nearly 40 kinds of furniture
products exported from Indonesia
in 2008. The major ten exported
products were: Other wooden
furniture (US$ 869.9 million or 56.64%
share); Bedroom wooden furniture
(US$ 194.9 million or 10.23% share);
Rattan furniture (US$ 174.7 million
or 9.16% share); Other seats of wood
or of wickerwork (US$ 107.6 million
or 5.64% share(; Seats of rattan (US$
106.1 million or 5.57% share); Other
seats of cane, osier, bamboo (US$
64.2 million or 3.37% share); Other
seats with wooden frames of other
than upholstered (US$ 62.9 million
or 3.30% share); Other furniture
(US$ 46.3 million or 2.43% share);
Other parts of furniture (US$ 40.1
million or 2.11% share); and Other
seats with metal, frames of other
than upholstered (US$ 38.8 million or
2.04% share).
Indonesian furniture products have
been exported to more than 100
countries around the world. Ten major
markets in 2008 included: the United
States (US$ 522.2 million or 27.40%
share); Japan (US$ 207.2 million or
10.87% share); the Netherlands (US$
130.3 million or 6,84% share); France
(US$ 105.3 million or 5.53% share);
United Kingdom (US$ 102,4 million
or 5.37% share); Germany (US$ 94.1
million or 4.94% share); Belgium (US$
88.9 million or 4.66% share); Australia
(US$ 63.4 million or 3.33% share);
Spain (US$ 57.0 million or 2.99%
share); and Italy (US$ 55.4 million or
