Malibu Fashion Week,
where high couture met
Malibu chic, was a two-day
extravaganza held at Rosenthal
Wine Bar and Patio Friday-Saturday,
March 23-24.
The event focused on
fashion, beauty and lifestyle,
and attendees enjoyed
an ideal Malibu day by imbibing
in intriguing wines
and beers, surveying fashions
displayed by cuttingedge
designers, and grooving
to a DJ’s playing fun,
rhythmic tunes.
“We’re coming to Malibu
to support the community,”
guest Sari Miller said. “We
have friends and clients in
Malibu who were affected
by the fire as so many
people were, but I know
that Malibu is recovering
strongly..”
Miller’s friend, Mindy
Wood, chimed in, saying,
“It’s a joy to support people
in Malibu as it’s such an
amazing community.”
Malibu Road displayed
its fabulous fashions, as
Malibu’ Shivali Patel displayed
l cashmere sweaters
from Christian Lehr, noting
that some of the clothing’s
fibers were twisted and
washed before being woven
together, resulting in both a
better feel and look.
by one of Malibu’s most
spirited designers, Krishna
Jaret, who displayed her
fashions and sweatshirts
with fun, simple, hip messages,
such as, “Lucky,”
and “Brooklyn.”
Shoppers had so many
choices.
“I am featuring blingedout
bikinis with Swarkovski
crystals,” said Sheri Bodell,
designer. “This year, we’ve
also added beautiful, wide
studded equestrian belts
and really cute corset belts
Happy The Golden Jam touts fresh flavor, animal welfare with each jar
Freelance Reporter
“Happiness is homemade
jam from Happy The Golden
Jam,” Chef Gilles Dirat
quipped, as he and Malibuite
Suzanne Zimmer cooked
in Zimmer’s aromatic kitchen,
putting up homemade
grapefruit-orange marmalade
jam.
“Because the orchard is
so close to the ocean, the
salt air helps beautiful oranges
and grapefruits to
grow fabulously here,” he
explained.
Guavas, figs, oranges,
tangerines, lemons, grapefruit,
apples, pears and avocados:
They all thrive in the
lovely orchard that nature
niched in a narrow ravine
abutting the Pacific Ocean.
Many Malibuites look
forward to enjoying the
jams that Dirat and Zimmer
create every new season.
“It’s some of the best jam
that I’ve ever tasted,” said
Jefferson Wagner, Malibu’s
mayor. “The various flavors
provide just the right blend
of sweet and tangy tastes.”
Dirat emphasized that the
secret to making such delectable
jam is to use 100
percent of the oranges and
grapefruits, adding only organic
sugar but no preservatives.
“The jam is au naturel
and in making it, there is no
waste because first, we boil
the grapefruits and oranges
and then, we use their pulp
to ensure that all the flavors
are fully captured,” he said.
“The trees in the orchard
have been here for 25 years
and they bear beautiful
fruit.”
Trying the grapefruitorange
marmalade, one’s
taste buds tingle as the various
zesty flavors merge and
mingle in one’s mouth, leaving
a memorable after-taste.
Vegans, you are taken
care of by Happy The Golden
Jam because the Vegan
Lemon Curd is full of lemon
zest and other fantastic flavors.
Jars of the jam, which
cost $14, are seasonal, so
soon, the company will feature
Fig Love, apple cinnamon
and guava.
“We know when the figs
are ready when they’re a
beautiful purple inside,” Dirat
said. “The ground in this
orchard is fabulous.”
Zimmer said that theirs
is essentially a two-person
operation, and they are cautious
about quality.
“In the 23 years that our
family has had the orchard,
we have used no pesticides
whatsoever; we are very
mindful of what is going
into the ground and of what
is coming out.”
Zimmer decided to start
the jam company in 2017.
“I used to win the pie festival
at Malibu Methodist
Church,” she said. “People
loved my pies and they really
loved the figs from the
orchard as well. So, it was a
natural progression to start
making the jams.”
The delicious jams were
inspired by Happy, the Zimmer’s
golden retriever.
The company motto for
Happy The Golden Jam is
“share the compassion,” because
a portion of the company’s
net profits is donated
to provide medical care for
homeless animals.
“It is very gratifying to
give back to the animals,”
Zimmer said, “We do so to
help each of them have a
happier, healthier life.”
Happy The Golden Jam
is available at purveyors
P.C. Greens and Vintage
Grocers, as well as at Malibu
