Ini Edo storms
Tanzania for
AWAFFEST
Continues from page 19
In a span of 12 years of her career, it appears she has released
17 singles of her own, most of which were not even promoted
despite the free social media tools available, at the time, to
her. In 2019, Waje’s songs on Spotify received only 7,000 + people
listening, and her You Tu<strong>be</strong> subscri<strong>be</strong>r page was about 6,800+.
Mrs Uduak Oduok, Entertainment lawyer and Co-founder Ebitu
Law Group, wonders what the talented singer has done to leverage
her Facebook fan page of 63,000+ followers, Twitter fan page of
450,000 +, and Instagram followers of 1.3 Million + to turn them
into listening and paying customers?
In a lengthy post on Africa Music Law blog, Mrs
Oduok stated that in her 12 year career, Waje has
released only two studio albums. “The first was in
2013, six years after she first officially entered the
music industry. The second was
released in 2018, five years after
the release of her first album. So
12 years after her career <strong>be</strong>gan,
we are just now getting a
sophomore album, and one that
insists on an RnB genre and
style that her core demographic
in Africa, from her metrics, do
not seem as interested in? It is
of significance that even in the
western market where RnB is
prevalent, the genre is not as
popular as it once was.”
“In the meantime during the
12 years of Waje’s career, she has ventured
into other creative ventures. In 2014, she
delved into acting. In 2016, she was one
of the four judges for the inaugural launch
of The Voice, in Nigeria. She wasn’t really
releasing her own music. In fact, the only
single officially released from Waje in
2016, was cover of ‘Ave Maria.’ This 2019,
Waje just launched a media company,
which presumably she employed to shoot
her documentary.”
“My point is there has never <strong>be</strong>en a true
consistency and focus on Waje’s part in
what got her to the limelight, that’s music.
And for all artists, you can’t say you are
“tired” of music (that is if you as
passionate as Waje says she is) when all
visible objective metrics show a lack of
true commitment to building your music
brand. Intermittent appearances on
television shows, radio, winning awards,
live performances and a completely
inconsistent release of music doesn’t cut
it.”
“If an investor is interested in Waje,
where is the brand consistency to give that
investor the confidence that she will have
a true return on investments when there
is no consistent music output from Waje?
The music is what helps drive an
attraction of investment opportunities,
and diverse streams of income to help
scale her business. If an investor cannot
see it, what is that investor investing in?
Further, what can Waje show an investor
to make that investor have confidence in
investing in her when 12 years later, she
is still at the start-up level of her business
i.e. wearing all hats, overworked, and has
no true operational infrastructure in
place?”, Mrs Oduok wrote.
Meanwhile, in as much as there is hope
for the living, Waje’s career is yet to reach
its dead end. In her 12 years career, the
songbird has accomplished so much that
Why Waje
should
not stop
the music
she has earned so little from her hard work,
which is why she decided on venting her
frustrations and even announced her
decision to quit music. Good enough, some
industry operators are showing interest in
helping to resuscitate Waje’s dwindling
music career. Controversial music
business personality, Ubi Franklin, is
among the stakeholders who have
offered support to the talented singer,
even as many are blasting her for not
<strong>be</strong>ing hardworking enough and also, that
she’s <strong>be</strong>ing stingy towards the publicity of
her craft.
But despite the insinuations, Waje in an
interview with Showtime said she’s still
at the stage where she’s hungry to surpass
her achievements. “I don’t have low selfesteem,
I’m a large cat. The reason I said
that is <strong>be</strong>cause I wanted to descri<strong>be</strong> to you
how hungry I’m to do more every day. If
you have this conversation with Omawumi
she would tell you; we literally sit down to
find out new ways to
interpret my brand. It’s
something we’re
constantly thinking of.
When you get to the
mindset that you’ve
arrived then there
would <strong>be</strong> nothing
more to think. May<strong>be</strong>
after I’ve conquered
the whole world, I can
sit back and say I’ve
arrived. But for now, I
haven’t even
conquered one tenth
of it yet. For now, I’m
still at the stage where
I hunger for more,”
she said. And that’s the
reason, Waje should
not stop the music.
Timaya rever<strong>be</strong>rates at industry nite
FOLLOWING the release of his 7 th studio project ‘Chulo
Vi<strong>be</strong>s’, veteran singer, Timaya was hosted at Industry Nite
for a listening party of the new album. The Hard Rock Cafe,
Lagos, was packed to the rafters on Thursday, as people turned out
en mass to celebrate and support the artiste.
Timaya got the crowd warmed up by performing some of his
greatest hits, and had everyone singing along. The artiste then
followed this with his traditional praise session, <strong>be</strong>fore <strong>be</strong>ing joined
on stage by Harry Song to perform ‘Samankwe’. Timaya then
performed songs from the ‘Chulo Vi<strong>be</strong>s’ album, instantly filling
the room with good energy and excitement. Since its release on
the 8th of February, “Chulo Vi<strong>be</strong>s” has <strong>be</strong>en widely received and
enjoyed massive airplay. Most favoured on the album are the hit
tracks ‘Balance’ and ‘Stoopid’; this much was evident as the crowd
lit up when Timaya performed the songs. To close the show, Peruzzi
performed his single ‘Amaka’. This was Timaya’s third outing at
Industry Nite, and he continues to perform above and <strong>be</strong>yond
expectations of fans. Among the audience were celebrities
including Harry Song, Ycee, DJ Jimmy Jatt, Peruzzi, Korede Bello,
Dprince, Dapo Taburna, King Perry, and Good girl LA . They all
came out to support one of their own.
