World’s Greatest Shave’s touching moment This year’s World’s Greatest Shave held a poignant significance for Bennelong MP John Alexander at Top Ryde City Shopping Centre on Friday. “As well raising more than $13,400 for the Leukemia Foundation, 18 months ago a member of my staff, a young man called Brendan (pictured, far right) was struck down with aggressive Stage 4 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, right in the middle of my 100km walk for the Leukaemia Foundation,” Mr Alexander said. “Brendan became dangerously ill within a matter of weeks but thankfully upon diagnosis he immediately started chemotherapy and received support from the Leukaemia Foundation. “Brendan has thankfully made a full recovery and to celebrate his 12 months back at work he and other members of my staff joined me in shaving our hair for a good cause: supporting those with blood cancers! “A special mention to Kendall, her hair was so long it was donated to make a wig! “She has informed me it will take two years to grow her hair back, she did very well committing to the cause.” People can still donate online by going to the link: http:// my.leukaemiafoundation. org.au/teamja WIN! with TWT! Wednesday 3 April, 2019 THE WEEKLY TIMES 17 Our local band of politicians are thrilled with their new ministries Recently re-elected government MPs across TWT territory were sworn into new ministries yesterday (Tuesday) and said they look forward to the challenges ahead. Ryde MP Victor Dominello moves from Finance, Services and Property to take charge of the Customer Service portfolio where he will be responsible for Service NSW centres and the additional role of public sector digital transformation. Former Planning Minister and Lane Cove MP Anthony Roberts takes on the role Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections, while Epping MP Dominic Perrottet remains Treasurer. Drummoyne MP John Sidoti is the new Minister for Sport, Multiculturalism, Seniors and Veterans. In Drummoyne, John Sidoti told The Weekly Times he is thrilled by his appointment, which is his first ministry. “I’m over the moon, very emotional and can’t keep up with all the phone calls congratulating me,” he said. “Both these ministries are right up my alley and of course multiculturalism has many links with sport.” A passionate fan of the Sydney Roosters he conceded he has a “soft spot” for the Tigers. “Perhaps the Inner West will now be become the epicenter for sport!” he said. Upper house MP Damien Tudehope - who gave up his lower house seat of Epping for Mr Perrottet – is expected to come into cabinet as Finance Minister and Parramatta MP Geoff Lee has taken on the Skills portfolio. Former Local Government Minister Gabrielle Upton – who opposed forced council mergers and then back flipped on Living with Lymphoedema By HEATHER YORK SUSIE* has never quite felt herself since she had breast cancer three years ago. Her wounds have healed, she has returned to her job as a school receptionist and is back playing netball but things are not quite right. She is reluctant to share her worries with her family and friends as she doesn’t want to bother them and thinks she should be happy she is here and alive and a “breast cancer survivor”. In her quiet moments, Susie is concerned that her left arm on the side where she had her surgery, has felt heavier since she flew back from a family holiday in Bali last month. Her bra feels a bit tight on the left side and she finds it difficult to reach up and hang clothes on the line. Susie is showing early signs of lymphoedema, a progressive condition where the accumulation of protein rich fluid results in swelling of one or more limbs. As Dame Judi Dench, well known actress and patron of the Lymphoedema Support Network states “lymphoedema is a little known illness”. The National Breast and Ovarian Cancer Centre (NBOCC) review of research evidence on secondary lymphoedema states “conservative estimates suggest that 20 per cent of breast, genitourinary, gynaecological, or melanoma survivors will experience secondary lymphoedema. More specifically, the incidence of lymphoedema following sentinel node biopsy which is a common surgical technique for women with breast cancer, can range from 4-8 per cent. March was Lymphoedema Awareness Month. On March 9 the Lymphoedema Support Group of NSW met in the city for an Information Day. This was well attended and an excellent opportunity for people like Susie to come and meet with other people also living with lymphoedema. Talks were given by Professor Neil Pillar, Dr John Boyages on radiotherapy and its effects and new surgical options, Tiffany Boland on exercise and practical tips and attendees also had the opportunity to visit trade displays and enjoy a delicious lunch.
