MESSAGE FROM THE
PRINCIPAL
MR. S. KHAN
Dear Parents and Students,
It has been 20 years since Al Ghazali College was established. Since the
inception of the school, opportunities have been provided for learners
to develop spiritually through the Friday dhikr programme. In addition,
leadership and social outreach programmes have been the hallmark of
the school's offerings. Academically, in excess of 90 % of our
matriculants have successfully graduated from university within the
duration of their chosen field of studies. We are indeed humbled by the
many blessings and favours that Almighty Allah has bestowed upon our
school. We also extend our heartfelt thanks to our parents and the
broader community who joined us in a memorable night walk to
commemorate the school's 20th anniversary.

A P R I L 2 0 1 9 | V O L . 1
While reflecting on the many highlights of the
school and the achievements of our learners, we
commenced the year with the development of a
''living'' strategic document. A key feature of the
school's strategic document is its vision which
seeks ''to create future oriented leaders through
individualised learning.'' Our commitment is
therefore, to ''establish a high performance
culture of academic excellence where all learners
are supported to discover and reach their full
potential.'', It is our intention to make a difference
in the lives of all learners who attend Al Ghazali
College.
Much has been written and spoken about the 4th
Industrial Revolution (4IR) as well as the
inadequacies of our current education system in
preparing school children for an unknown future.
In noting some of the existing gaps in our
education system, we have introduced a ''Create &
Innovate Hour'', a Digital Skills period, Project
Based Learning and a Critical Thinking period so
that our learners acquire important skills and
competencies. Additionally, our senior debating
team continues to grow in stature. In order to
remain relevant in a changing world, we will
continue to reflect, and we necessary adapt our
curriculum so that our learners acquire essential
skills and competencies to apply to new and
complex situations.
In celebrating the school's 20th anniversary, we
launched our rebranded school uniform with
much fanfare. The re-branded school uniform was
well-received by parents and learners who
attended a specially convened assembly. We now
eagerly await the delivery of the first batch of
orders
We pray that Almighty Allah continue to bless our
endeavours as we chart our way into an exciting
future!

RE-LAUNCH
WRITTEN BY:
RADIYAH REGAL

With Al Ghazali College reaching such a great milestone of
20 years, they decided to go big or go home by rebranding
the school uniform. AGC went well all out with the release
and it was an absolute success.
FROM NEW SCARVES, NEW ABAYAS, NEW BLAZERS, TIES,
BRANDED SHIRTS, NEW P.E KITS AND EVEN DRESSES FOR
LITTLE GIRLS!
Everyone is loving the new uniform and are actually happy
to call it their own. AGC hosted a fashion show on the
22nd of February to reveal these lovely uniforms modeled
by the best models you will ever find - the little ones and
our treasured staff of AGC.
The countdown got everyone hyped with the balloon
release, streamers and even a smoke machine! Our
uniforms are definitely the creme de la creme.

CELEBRITY COACH
Exclusive interview with
Allahudien
Paleker
Reporters: As'ad Bassier & Muhammad Naiko

WHO IS AGC's
COACH?
AGC Media Club Reporters interviewed Mr.
Allahudien Paleker, the school's very own celebrity.
He recently made his debut as an international
umpire and they could not wait to hear his
inspirational story... and maybe get an autograph or
two.
1. What was your childhood like?
I grew up in a small surburb
called Cravenbeak in Cape Town.
I had many friends and we spent
countless hours playing outside.
We played soccer, cricket, tennis
- basically any sport which we
saw on T.V. That is how I fell in
love with cricket.

2. What ignited your passion
for cricket?
Cricket is my family's passion;
all of my cousins and uncles
played cricket. My dad was an
umpire, so I spent most of my
childhood on a sport's field. I
used to accompany my dad to
club cricket on weekends and
that is how my passion for
cricket intensely grew.
3. Enlighten us about your professional career?
From the age of 11 to 19, I had played for the Western Province Team in
Cape Town and made my first-class debut and thereafter received a
professional cricket contract from Titan Cricket Academy. Grabbing this
opportunity immediately, I moved to Pretoria. I played for nine seasons
at the Titans, until the end of my contract period and then decided to
pursue a career in umpiring.
4. What inspired you to become an
umpire?
Umpiring is in my blood - my father
always wanted to be an international
umpire so I am living his dream. He will
always be my role-model.

4. What is the highlight of your career?
There has been many highlights
throughout my cricket career thus far.
However the one which stands out, at
this point in time, took place recently; I
umpired my first One Day International
Match between South Africa and
Pakistan. Other highlights of my career
include umpiring for 74 first-class
games, T20 games - both nationally and
internationally.
We hope that Coach Paleker will
continue to inspire our learners into
pursuing careers in sports.

EMBRACING CHANGE
WRITTEN BY: ANONYMOUS
As teenagers, we're often lost as to what we want. We're
confused as to what we deserve. It's a phase in our lives
where everything seems more complicated than it actually is.
That's just the beauty of being a teenager.
We are constantly changing. Maybe we are not who we once
were, and maybe we lost peers because they didn't agree
with the person we've become. Maybe we are in the process
of changing again and that's okay. Change is important, it is
vital and we can't stay the same all our lives.
Every mistake we make, every challenge we face and every
milestone makes us who we are. It transforms us into the
person we are meant to become. That's the beauty of change,
it allows us to go through phases to find ourselves. It
motivates us to continue. It enables us to hold our head up, to
keep strong - because we are strong. We just don't see it.

So although change may seem like a bad thing, and although
it scares us, we have to remember our roots, we have to
remember that just like a flower grows towards the sun, it
stays stuck to their roots. Just like how we grow up and
change, we have to remember where we started and how we
started. That way, we will be prepared for whatever life
throws at us.

SPIRITUAL
CAMP 2019
AL GHAZALI COLLEGE

The 2019 Spiritual Camp was hailed a great success by
attendees. Masjid Abu Bakr was the venue of choice as
learners and parents gave up their comfy beds for a night
on the musallah. The camp kicked off with a talk about
the youth with special reference made to the Sahaba
(R.A). In addition to this, the students were fortunate
enough to view the blessed relics of the Prophet
Muhammad (S.A.W) which was on display. The supper was
then prepared by the teachers and parents of AGC while
the learners bonded over a game of table tennis and
football. The night was concluded with pep talks and
snacks with excitement brewing for the next day.

The Fajr Athaan signalled the beginning of what was to be
an action-packed day. The breakfast, prepared by head
chef Sheikh Shoayb helped kick everyone into gear. With
excitement levels reaching its peak, it was time to proceed
to the much anticipated paintballing. The learners,
teachers and parents dressed in camouflaged outfits
picked their weapons of choice and proceeded to the play
arena. The competitive match resulted in stained
clothing and an immeasurable amount of fun. The
school's values were incorporated into these events with
compassion, collaboration and respect being the order of
the day. The camp was then concluded with a return to
the Masjid. The goals had been achieved ... Lifelong
memories had been created.

I AM A SYRIAN REFUGEE
I still remember, it was an early morning. I was packing,
preparing myself for the journey that was set out for me.
Bracing myself for what the future had in store for me, I
made sure to pack only necessities, trying my best to take
along the bare minimum.
The sun had not risen yet. I began to set out and embark on
a new journey and I was ready to face what had been
destined for me. I carried along only some water, bread, a
light jacket and a pocket knife. I slowly made my way to the
dock. After an extremely long time of walking, I reached the
dock. It was almost noon, I decided to hide until night and
camped in a bush. It was painful and uncomfortable. It felt
as if the sun was right above my head.
Night came. A boat finally arrived. It was full of people, but I
was grateful to have managed to board it. I boarded and
sat cramped between groups of people. The boat rowed
out. It was a rough journey to Europe.
When we reached, I couldn't help but cry, I was so happy to
have reached safely, yet so upset to have left my birth place
- the place I had grown up, the place where some of my
best memories took place. With mixed emotions, I braced
myself for my new life in Europe.
is over a million professions and each one definitely comes with its fair
There
of challenges and obstacles. Although I think being a president would
share
a president is definitely not easy as it comes with innumerous amount
Being
work. You would need to be a leader, someone the country can rely on.
of
if I was a president for a day, there would be a couple of things I would
So
to change - Education and inequality.
want
Africa's education is definitely adequate but is certainly not the best
South
yet. There are many excellent schools, however, not everybody can afford
as
On the other hand, there are many schools who cannot afford decent
it.
As a result, people are uneducated or have a low level of
facilities.
Therefore, as a president I would attempt to make education
education.
and improve the level of teaching and facilities in schools.
free
addition to education, I would also want the people in my country to be
In
equally and fairly. Treating people equally is not only determined by
treated
person's race but as well as a person's gender, culture and religion. As a
a
of an unequal country, I would exert myself to bring equality
president
the country. I would offer everybody the same amount of rights
amongst
I would not divide people by how they look or what they do.
and
having the thought of being a president has conveyed stress to me. I
Just
not possibly imagine how I would feel if I was one. I definitely would
could
the country to be a better place, but I definitely would not want to
want
a president.
become
IF I BECOME
PRESIDENT...
be one of the toughest. So I thought, what if I was a president for one day.
Create and
Innovate Hour
The four C's of the 21st Century skills are some of the most
popular learning strategies in today's environment. These entail
Critical thinking, Creativity, Collaboration and Communication
where learners are given opportunities to solve problems, think
outside the box, work together to achieve a common goal and
learn how to best convey their ideas. On a larger scale, these
four qualities are essential for modern students to succeed in
school and the workplace. The Create and Innovate hour was
introduced into the school this year, to ensure our learners had
time to practice these skills in the various clubs. In Term 1, the
CIH clubs were as follows:
GARDENING

HOSPITALITY
ARTS & CRAFTS

MEDIA
JUNIOR
TECHIES

ROBOTICS
The chatter amongst us in the kombi was so
enjoyable that we did not even realise we had
arrived. Pride roared about the shaking stadium as
the smell of dry biltong and coke clouded the air.
The sky was a somewhat aesthetic kind of dull,
welcoming a coming storm, probably with
reference to rooting for the Stormers, yet even that
was not enough to keep the Bulls from their
astounding 40-3 victory, celebrated by fire;
confetti and bright sparks shooting into the air;
lighting the stadium along with the faces of the
proud supporters. The quintessential parts of the
amazing breath-taking trip was the alleviating
experience, and the bond formed between us was
one-of-a-kind.

20 YEARS OF DEDICATED SERVICE AT AL GHAZALI COLLEGE

FAREWELL
QARI KHALEEL
Qari Khaleel has played an integral role as one of the pioneers at Al
Ghazali College and has been serving the Muslim community in
Pretoria, at large. Qari visited Pretoria, unaware that this was
actually a job interview. His intention at the time was to serve the
Pretoria community for one year. However, Qari is only returning
home (DBN) after 40 years of sterling service. This is a bitter-sweet
affair and with a heavy heart AGC bids its esteemed Ustaadh
farewell.
