A Trip Back in Time for Millis
Elementary School
Time Capsule Planted in Cornerstone of
Clyde F. Brown Is Opened
By J.D. O’Gara
Little girls were
dressed in poodle skirts
and ponytails, little
boys in plaid shirts or
white t-shirts and jeans,
greaser-style. Spirit
day harkened back
to 1954, the year that
the brand-new Millis
Elementary School,
later to be named for
Millis School Principal
Clyde F. Brown,
was built and opened.
As the classes filed
in, the gymnasium
buzzed with excitement.
Today, March
22, 2019, would be the day
the time capsule, planted behind
a granite cornerstone
of the building some 65 years
ago and unearthed on Friday,
March 1 st by members of the
Millis Historical Commission,
the final item, carefully pulled
the Clyde F. Brown Elementary
School opened in 1954. The
scroll contained the names of
the incoming students for the
their own names.
Family Touched by Tragedy
Reaches Out to Give Back to Others
By Jane Lebak
On April 7th at 11 a.m., dozens
of runners will meet at Oak Grove
Park in support of a local family.
When Jessie Krauss, a Millis
High School senior, had to
choose her senior year project,
the answer was obvious. “I knew
I wanted to do something that involves
fundraising for frontotemporal
dementia.”
Frontotemporal dementia
(FTD) is a specific kind of dementia
resulting from deterioration in
the temporal and frontal lobes of
the brain. These areas specifically
impact emotion, language, and
decision-making. It strikes mostly
those in their fifties, and in people
under age 60, FTD is the most
common cause of dementia. Currently
there is no cure.
In 2017, Krauss’s father was
diagnosed with FTD, an unbelievable
blow to the family. Krauss
says, “Our Dad was basically our
supporter, and he knew how to
do everything around the house.
Then so quickly, he became so
dependent on us and we were the
ones caring for him. The father we
idolized so much was being taken
away from us.”
Through this dark time, Jessie
Krauss continued studying at Millis
High School and running with
the track team. In her senior year,
she became one of the captains
of the Varsity Soccer team and
received the NESDEC Award in
November, 2018.
Then she began her senior project.
“I wanted to combine the passion
for running and a fundraiser.
I wanted it to be something where
I could bring everyone together to
raise awareness and raise money
for the cause.”
The running part would be organizing
a 5K run/walk race. The
“We’ve been working up to
this event,” said Clyde Brown
Principal Jason Phelps, of the
students, who were fascinated by
the time capsule and the mystery
of its contents.
“It’s such a delightful way to
bring history alive to the kids in
the school and their teachers,”
added Millis Superintendent
Nancy Gustafson.
With cameras flashing and
a projector showing the whole
process, members of the Millis
Historical Commission delicately
opened the time capsule, and
then the three former students
took turns carefully removing
its contents, which included, in
order of removal:
• A proposal for the original
grade school
• A warrant article dated June
9, 1953 for the funding of the
new elementary school
an Alice and Jerry activity
book published by Roe Publishing
Company
• Arithmetic We Use, a first-grade
workbook of the time
According to Nathan Maltinsky,
Chair of the Millis Historical
Commission, the documents
unearthed will likely be housed
in display cases at the Niagara
1 Firehouse, which is nearing
completed restoration and recently
was opened to the public
through an open house organized
by Millis High School senior
Lily Denman.
Phelps adds that the current
Clyde Brown students will be
creating their own time capsule,
and some special community
events for this spring are planned
by a subcommittee of the school
council.
and her family had become familiar
with their work. “This includes
research on the brain, testing out
medicines, or even support groups
for caregivers,” says Krauss.
Krauss had run races before,
but never organized one. “There
were so many unknowns,” she
The Town of Millis received
congratulatory letters from both
President Dwight Eisenhower and
Massachusetts Governor Christian
Herder, a resident of Millis.
The first item taken from the boxwas a proposal for 1954 school,
held by Ruth Harcovitz, who was a first-grader at the time, along with
Chrissy (Wilson) Hana and Jill (Wildman) Kuhlman, standing behind
her. Millis Historic Commission’s Nathan Maltinsky looks on.
Jill Kuhlman holds this
newspaper of the time.
Among items in the time capsule
were this activity book and an
arithmetic activity book.
says, starting with the date, the
location, and the route. Krauss
coordinated the details between
Officer Bickford, MGH’s fundraising
team, and Oak Grove
Park where the race will be run
on the trails. She arranged babysitting
for participants as well as
prizes for the top finishers. “Now
I have to get the permits. There’s
just a lot of planning.”
The race will use the trails at
Oak Grove. Participants can run
or walk the route, or do a combination
of both. Five kilometers is
3.1 miles.
As happens with most raceplanners,
Krauss probably will
be too busy on race day to run.
“Some friends are going to run
it,” she says, “but some would
rather be a volunteer.”
Mass General’s fundraising
coordinators set a goal of
$5,000, although at first Krauss
thought that was unreasonable.
“When I hit $1,000 after three
days, I was so surprised,” she
says. By mid-March, she’d raised
three thousand dollars, and it
appears that by race day, she
might exceed her goal. Krauss
predicts fifty to sixty runners on
race day.
The monetary donations are an
extension of the concern Krauss’s
Millis senior Jessie Krauss, right, is organizing a 5K to take place on
April 7 th , at Oak Grove Farm in Millis. The event will raise funds for a
unit of Massachusetts General Hospital focused on frontotemporal
dementia (FTD), with which her Dad was diagnosed two years ago.
family has received from the Millis
community in general. “I’ve been
so surprised by the support our
family has gotten,” she says. “All
the Moms got together and set up
meal plans. That takes the stress
off our mom. People would just
bring over a meal, even when they
don’t understand the full extent of
what we’re going through.”
She adds, “This project
wouldn’t even be possible without
the amount of support I’ve gotten.
It’s important for the community
Stain T’s
to participate for my project to
even be a thing.”
Race registration is $20 per
participant, but individuals can
donate more whether or not they
choose to run.
The race registration form
is available at https://because.
massgeneral.org/event/run-forftd/e226005
but participants can
register on race day as well.
Anyone wishing to run a 5K
should google Couch To 5K for a
beginning running program.
Catherine MacInnes is seeking
reelection on the Millis Board of
Selectmen.
“I am humbled that the voters
supported me three years ago
when I ran for Selectman after
23 years of service on the Planning
Board. I have accomplished
much, but we are not done!”
As Selectman, Cathy fulfilled
many of her goals: a female police
officer; and new Town Administrator,
Police Chief, Finance
Director, and DPW Director.
As the Selectmen’s liaison to the
Permanent Building Committee,
Cathy was instrumental in permitting
“leftover” contamination
funds to complete construction of
the fire station without requesting
additional funds from voters or
cutting back on the project. As a
result, a much-needed police station
carport, originally removed,
was added. She played a significant
role in obtaining unanimous
Board of Selectmen consent to
bring the funding of a new elementary/middle
school to a vote.
Cathy reluctantly supported
the stormwater utility tax. “As
an elected official, there is nothing
worse than burdening our
residents with an additional tax.
But we can thank our representatives
in Congress and at the State
House for the unfunded laws they
impose that required it.”
“The marijuana zoning bylaws
I worked on passed at our
Fall Town Meeting. I respect those
who opposed, but a vast majority
of town meeting members agreed
with my view that it is wiser for
Millis to receive tax revenue from
these new ventures than for surrounding
towns to receive it.”
As a member of the Water/
Sewer Committee, Cathy led negotiations
with the developer of
Glen Ellen to run water and sewer
down Orchard Street with stubs at
each intersection for future water/
sewer construction – at no cost to
the town, saving millions of dollars.
A gas line will soon be added.
“With several newly-constructed
town-owned buildings,
now is the time to complete a
buildings study to keep our investments
from deterioration.
Unlike residential dwellings or as
simple as these buildings used to
be, today’s modern buildings are
extremely sophisticated and contain
at least a dozen systems challenging
to operate and maintain.
Department heads such as librarians,
police and fire chiefs, and
the Superintendent of schools are
already overwhelmed. To burden
them with maintaining their facilities
will distract those folks. Without
a properly planned response
to this issue, both the mission of
the department heads and the
condition of our buildings will be
diminished.”
What is still on Cathy’s list of
unfinished business?
“Jeff Hardin once told me that
the Selectmen must always be in
the third year of a five-year plan. I
am proud to have been part of the
boards that supported the marijuana
zoning by-laws, the Glen
over-55 housing development,
and the assisted living facility on
Bridge St. As a result, revenue
will be forthcoming. Economic
development is essential to retaining
and maintaining municipal
services. I am proposing to set up
a committee consisting only of
the fire and police chiefs and the
DPW director to research added
expenses to their departments as
a result of this and other construction.
It is imperative for us to plan
accordingly for any burdens these
unique projects might place on
departments. As the town’s liaison
to the Norfolk County Advisory
Board, I have learned how other
towns put more money into their
‘stabilization’ fund (what I consider
the town’s savings account),
and as a result more funds are
available for future capital needs.”
Cathy appreciates that the
current Board of Selectmen is
cohesive and works well together.
“Sure, we do not agree on everything,
but we work jointly to do
what is right for our residents. I
do not look to the Town Administrator
colleagues. All of us do our own
research and respect each other’s
opinions. I ask that you continue
to support me.”
Millis Candidate for Selectman:
Pete Jurmain
My name is Pete Jurmain
and I am running for Selectman
in Millis. My wife Diane and I
have lived in Millis for 13 years.
During that time, I have been involved
in many Town activities
and committees. I have been a
member of the Finance Committee
for 12 years, as Chair for
3 years and Vice Chair for one
year. I am also a member of the
Capital Planning Committee; I
started and chaired the IS/Communications
Committee; I have
volunteered as Acting Director
of IT for the Town of Millis for
over a year and have helped to
develop the strategy for upgrading
the Town’s IT infrastructure.
For the last 3 years, I have provided
technical IT support to the
Police Station, Fire Station and
VMB as a volunteer. Prior to
starting my own IT company in
1987, Jurmain & Partners LLC,
with my wife, I worked for IBM
(Systems Engineer), AT&T (Division
Manager) and ITT (Director).
I have also successfully taken
a software development company
through a turnaround as its
President/CEO. And, I served a
tour of duty as an officer with the
US Army in Vietnam.
My priority concerns as
a candidate for Selectman:
Control Taxes: Over the past
eight years, taxes have increased
steadily. This is not surprising
with the construction of four new
facilities that had become desperately
outdated. But this trend
can’t continue. We need to look
at ways to better coordinate our
debt schedule with the need to
maintain and replace our Town’
infrastructure, balanced with
the needs of all the residents, especially
those living on fixed or
low incomes. Done responsibly,
this should permit the Town to
mange it’s needs without having
to increase our taxes. Our State
representatives are key to financial
assistance for necessary projects
such as road repairs, senior
transportation, facilities and educational
support for our youngest
citizens.
Concern For Our Senior Citizens:
I will continue to work with Town
management to find better ways
to meet the needs of our senior
community, of which I too am
a member. I have been working
with Town officials for a long time
to find a more desirable location
for our senior center. But, any
new construction or renovation
must not increase the tax burden
on our senior citizens. The
seniors tell me that they would
like a new facility, but not at the
expense of additional taxes.
Road Repairs: The conundrum
here is how to accomplish
this without raising taxes.
Among the options is to cover
these repairs with funds from
items coming off the debt schedule.
It doesn’t lower our taxes,
but at least it doesn’t raise them
either. And again, we should be
seeking aid from our State representatives.
Volunteering and Voting: We
all have a responsibility to participate
in our local governance by
voting. Voting determines how
the limited funds that we do have
available for projects will be spent.
I continually encourage everyone
to become more active in the
community by joining committees,
I understand how difficult
$299
AffordableJunkRemoval@gmail.com
www.TakeAwayJunk.com
it is to make the time necessary
to work and take care of family
while trying to participate in running
the community, but it is so
important for everyone to take
part at some level in this process.
Five Member Select Board:
Millis should have a larger Board.
Though there are potential issues
with the interactions of five vs.
three individuals on the Board of
Selectmen, I believe the benefits
of a larger board outweigh the liabilities.
A larger board will permit
two members to meet and discuss
an agenda without violating the
Open Meeting Law. And it will
encourage a greater diversity of
opinions to be expressed which
are likely to be more representative
of the community at large.
When you vote on May 6th,
I hope you will consider voting
for me!
Millis Friends of the Library
Encountering Damaged Donations
By J.D. O’Gara
Board books that are chewed
and eaten. A bag of books covered
in dust and dirt. Books with
water stains, mold—and worse,
rotting from red rot on the inside.
Some with no covers. Some without
spines. Coloring books that
have been colored in, books with
bugs, and sticker books missing
the stickers.
Um… The Friends of the
Millis Public Library are going
to pass, thanks.
“It’s just gross. You would
be surprised. If there’s just one
sticker missing, that’s one thing,”
says Sandra Scott, President of
the Friends of the Millis Public
Library, who appreciates the
thoughtful book donations from
many patrons. Donations of
books that are falling apart or can’t
be sold for some reason, however,
are a little less than thoughtful.
They actually end up a burden to
the library, that will then need to
unload the junk. Sometimes one
man’s trash is best put in the trash,
not donated.
“We actually sell our books
at a decent price to make some
money to pay for the stuff the
friends pay for that is not covered
in the library budget,” says Scott.
“That’s why the book sale is really
important as a fundraiser, but
we can’t charge if people are giving
us (junk).”
In fact, the Friends of the
Millis Public Library have been
asked by other Friends groups
how their sale is so successful,
and the answer is “because we
sort that stuff out. People will
come to the sale and stay longer
and actually buy more, because
they realize it’s not like your average
garage sale.”
Scott says the Friends stop
taking book donations the week
before the book sale, in order
to take the time to carefully go
through the donations (so drop
that bag of nice book donations
by sooner rather than later!).
How does your donation rate?
Scott says the answer is simple.
“We really appreciate people
donating to the sale, and coming
– this really supports the museum
passes, a lot of the children’s programming,
the adult programming
and the music,” says Scott,
“but before you donate, look at
everything and ask, would you
buy this?”
The Friends of the Millis Library appreciate your book donations to
their book sale, which supports programs at the Millis Library. Some,
however, can’t be sold, so keep these ones at home.

A 100 Year Story in the Making
By: Kyle Koller
What would you do if you
lived to be 100? A full century
of experiences, adventures, and
crazy stories would be under
your belt. You would see the
transformation of friends and
family over a 100-year span, and
even get the chance to possibly
school, including one in which
she reminiscences the time when
school was canceled because it
was too cold to heat the school.
She recalls that the temperatures
were 30 below zero! She also remembers
growing up on a farm
and helping her dad by driving
the oxen through the fields and
driving a horse drawn hay rake.
the year that Esther and her new
family moved to our community
of Medway. As Esther’s life progressed,
her career was put on
the backburner in order to tend
to her newborn son, Charles.
During this time, Esther began to
start substitute teaching in Medway
as well as other surrounding
towns, which she continued until
a member of the church since
1985. She has also been a member
of The Kings Daughters
for almost 50 years, serving as
President of the Norfolk Chapter
for a few years! As a resident
in Maine, Esther was an active
member of the Grange, serving
as the Master of the Wells
Chapter. She was also a longtime
member of the local 4H
club, and at one point was even
the state delegate.
We at Local Town Pages would
like to wish Esther Fox a very
happy 100th birthday and ask
that anybody who sees her to
congratulate her on reaching this
extraordinary milestone. Happy
100th Birthday Esther!
meet your great-great grandchildren.
What story would you
write about yourself if you lived
to be 100?
Our very own Medway Resident,
Esther Fox, reached this
extraordinary milestone March
29th of this year. Esther was
born on March 29th, 1919 in
Wells, Maine. Esther has fond
memories of her days in high
She graduated high school at
the age of 16 in which she further
advanced her education by
attending the Gorham Normal
School.
In 1939 at the age of 20, Esther
began her career in education
by teaching in a one room
school house in Maine. It was
during this time that Esther met
the love her life, Frank Fox, who
she married in 1951. It was also
15th Annual Millis Beautification Day
New Date: Saturday, May 4
It’s a great time to show civic
pride by supporting the May 4
town-wide cleanup sponsored by
the Millis Lions and Millis Garden
Club. It’s the first Saturday in
May from 9 a.m. to Noon, with
registration and site assignments
starting at 8:30 a.m.
You can make a difference—
volunteers of all ages are needed
to help beautify the Millis landscape
by raking leaves, weeding,
and removing litter and brush at
sites such as the Veterans Memorial
Building, Millis Library, Clyde
Brown School, and Richardson’s
Pond as well as along main
roads. “The final number of sites
will depend on how many volunteers
sign up. The more people
who register the more sites can be
assigned. We hope to have over
200 people,” comments Bill Lawson,
Co-Chairman, “and with private
citizens volunteering, we free
up a lot of Department of Public
Works money for other purposes,
like filling potholes in our roads!
Everyone wants that to happen!”
Both individuals and groups
are urged to volunteer and will
be assigned to sites located all
over town. Many students from
the Millis public schools – athletic
teams, the student honor
society, the Millis High School
Leos, and students working on
community projects as well as
all those who simply care about
their community—along with
their teachers and parents—
make a huge impact.
In past years, community volunteers
have made a big difference
in just a couple of hours, cleaning
up over 100 cubic yards of brush
and trash, which translates to
200 leaf bags, 140 bags of trash,
and 5 small dump truck loads of
brush and dead trees. Residents
and businesses who are not able to
participate in the event itself are
encouraged to clean and beautify
their own street frontage and adjacent
areas.
“This is a great opportunity
to make our town shine,” adds
Lawson, “and we all benefit when
9 a.m. – 12 p.m.
we save tax money. All it takes is
a few hours of time on a Saturday
morning, and it’s a nice way
to meet other good people in the
community. So please, everyone, if
you care about Millis, bring your
a.m. at the canopy on the front
lawn of Veterans Memorial Building—Rain
or Shine. Coffee, tea,
hot chocolate, and donuts will be
provided, courtesy of New England
Coffee, Roche Bros, Dunkin
Donuts, and McDonalds. In our
effort to reduce plastics in the environment
we ask that you bring
your own filled water bottles. No
plastic bottles of water will be
given out this year. Water coolers
will be available for refilling bottles.
volunteers. For more information
Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery
By Roger M. Kaldawy, M.D.
Milford Franklin Eye Center
What is a cataract and
what is cataract surgery?
A cataract is a common condition
in which the normally clear
lens of the eye becomes progressively
cloudy. When light passes
through a clear lens, the light
can focus to a point, creating a
clear view. When light passes
through a cataract, the light gets
distorted, creating a blurred view.
Compared to vision with a clear
lens, your vision with a cataract
may look fuzzy, and colors might
be muted. These visual disturbances
from cataracts are progressive,
and when they become
bothersome or limit your daily
activities, it’s time to consider
treatment. Treatment for cataracts
involves surgery to remove
the cataract and replace it with
an intraocular lens implant. It is
the most common surgical procedure
in the US and around the
world and is considered to be
an extremely successful and safe
procedure.
What is laser-assisted
cataract surgery?
Many of the steps of cataract
surgery are traditionally performed
using handheld tools.
Now, they can be completed with
the precision of a laser. Using
the Catalys Precision Laser System,
your surgeon can offer you
unprecedented accuracy and
customization in your cataract
surgery procedure. Your surgeon
can use the laser to create
a circular opening for accessing
Optical
Shop
On-Site
and removing the cataract. Clinical
studies have shown that this
opening is more accurate when
performed with the laser than
what is achievable by hand. The
laser then softens and breaks up
the hard cataract into tiny pieces,
allowing for gentler, easier cataract
removal. Depending on
your pre-operative vision and desired
visual result, your surgeon
may recommend a tailored treatment
plan that could include creating
ultra-precise laser incisions
in the cornea and a specific lens
implant type (e.g. The ActiveFocus
or Symfony multifocal lens
for near and far vision). This tailored
treatment may reduce your
need for glasses or contact lenses
after surgery.
What are the benefits of
laser-assisted cataract
surgery?
• A highly customized treatment
using advanced 3D imaging
• A treatment with little or no
discomfort
• A more precise treatment with
ability to better treat astigmatism
• A gentler and easier cataract
removal
• Generally, a more rapid visual
recovery due to reduced inflammation
• The opportunity to receive tailored
treatment with advanced
technology multi-focal lenses,
which may reduce the need
for glasses or contacts after
surgery
MILFORD - FRANKLIN
EYE CENTER
Am I a suitable candidate
for laser-assisted cataract
surgery?
In our experience, most cataract
patients are suitable patients
for laser-assisted cataract surgery.
Your doctor and his/her support
staff will discuss your candidacy
in more detail during your cataract
evaluation exam.
How long has the
procedure been
performed?
Thousands of procedures
have been successfully performed
using the Catalys Precision Laser
System, and lasers have been
used in eye procedures for decades.
Catalys laser represents
the new standard in precision
laser cataract surgery and was
FDA cleared in 2011.
How does the laser work?
Every eye has a unique size
and shape. Prior to treatment,
the Catalys Precision Laser
System scans your eye making
a precise 3D map of relevant
structures. This process enables
your surgeon to create a highly
customized treatment plan that
is tailored for your eye. The laser
then focuses light to create precise
incisions exactly where intended.
The laser makes the incisions in a
matter of seconds. You should experience
little, if any, discomfort.
What will I feel?
You can expect little or no discomfort
during your treatment.
During the laser portion, patients
describe seeing kaleidoscope of
lights and slight pressure only.
COOLSCULPTING PLUS
vs
LIPOSUCTION
Mac Med performs, loves and
gets wonderful results with both
procedures. Coolsculpting Plus
and Liposuction are permanent
fat cell removal methods. Selection
of the right procedure is
based on the client’s body type
and fat distribution.
Coolsculpting Plus (no down
time) works by freezing fat cells
which are then reabsorbed by the
body (eats them up). The original
cells are no longer able to fill with
fat. We treat abdomen, thighs,
arms and bra fat.
Vaser liposuction breaks fat cells
up and melts them. The Doctor
vacuums the fat cells out of
the body giving you back your
six pack, your hip shape, your
smooth back. The Doctor floats
above your muscle shaping you
to your former shape.
This is the answer for larger areas
like an entire upper and
lower abdomen, inner and outer
thighs, knees, necks, love handles
and bra fat. Liposuction also
promotes skin tightening. After
liposuction there is minimal time
required for wearing a compression
garment (a must).
Superintendent Armand Pires
is pleased to announce that Medway
High School will launch a
new program to support freshmen
as they transition from middle
school this fall.
The program, called the
Freshmen Academy, will group
educators into two teams, serving
approximately 80 ninth grade
students each. The teams will include
English, science, math and
social studies teachers, as well as
a counselor and a special education
teacher who will work together
to monitor the academic,
social, emotional and behavioral
progress of each student.
“The transition from middle
school to high school is significant
in both the academic and
social emotional aspects of the
lives of ninth grade students,”
said Medway High School Principal
John Murray. “Many students
find the transition to the
high school challenging, and
this program will allow our staff
to focus on the unique needs of
each student, and work together
to provide support.”
The teacher teams will meet
during the week to discuss any
support students may need, and
will keep a regular dialogue going
throughout the school year about
the development of each student.
This time will also incorporate
ongoing professional development,
and will allow teachers to
Millis received an honorable
mention for its entry, “Safety
Huddle,” from students Adriana
Arguijo, Tyler Gelasco, Peter
Sanchioni, Zach Whooten, and
Cody Rossi, who tell the story
teamwork in fire prevention
through the lens of how a football
team operates. This is a fun
riff on Herb Brooks’ motivational
speech to the 1980 Olympic
hockey team. And their final
message – Fire Safety is a Team
Effort was something the judges
appreciated. The filming enhanced
the story, lending to the
seriousness of what was trying to
be accomplished. Teamwork and
fire prevention are what is important
in fire safety. Their teacher is
Charles River Watershed Association’s
mission is to use science,
advocacy and the law to
protect, preserve and enhance
the Charles River and its watershed.
One of our country’s
first watershed organizations,
CRWA formed in 1965 in response
to public concern about
the declining condition of the
Charles River. Since its earliest
days of advocacy, CRWA has
figured prominently in major
clean-up and watershed protection
efforts that have dramatically
improved the health of the
Charles. Because of CRWA’s
efforts in the last 50 years, the
Charles is considered the cleanest
urban river in the United
States by the U.S. E.P.A.
Award-winning
documentary Bag It!
Shines Light on seriousness
of the Plastics Problem
Join other environmentally
concerned citizens and community
leaders at the Millis Public
Library on Wednesday, April
17, for a showing of the awardwinning
film BAG IT. Program
at 7pm; hospitality begins at
6:30pm. Free and open to the
public.
Bag It follows “Everyman”
Jeb Berrier as he tries to make
sense of our dependence on plastic
bags. Although his quest starts
out small, Jeb soon learns that
the problem extends past landfills
to oceans, rivers and ultimately
human health.
The average American uses
about 500 plastic bags each year,
for about twelve minutes each.
This single-use mentality has
led to the formation of a floating
island of plastic debris in the
Pacific Ocean more than twice
the size of Texas. The film explores
these issues and identifies
how our daily reliance on plastic
threatens not only waterways and
marine life, but human health,
too. Two of the most common
plastic additives are endocrine
disruptors, which have been
shown to link to cancer, diabetes,
autism, attention deficit disorder,
obesity and infertility.
The film is brought to you by
the Millis Garden Club, in partnership
with the Millis Public Library,
with the goal of spreading
awareness of the serious problems
caused by the proliferation
of plastic bags.

Sears and Jessica Daly. All three
students are 2018 graduates of
Medway High School. Scholarship
recipients must demonstrate
that they have successfully
completed their first semester of
college and are enrolled for second
semester classes. Dunne is
studying accounting at the Isenberg
School of Management at
the University of Massachusetts
Amherst and is also pursuing a
minor in economics. Sears is in
her freshmen year at Westfield
State where she is majoring in
criminal justice. Daly attends
Arizona State University and is
majoring in biomedical sciences
with the intent to pursue a graduate
degree in physical therapy.
To be eligible for a scholarship,
students must either participate
as a student-teller in the
School Bank Program at Medway
High School where Charles
River Bank operates a fullservice
educational branch, or
be employed at any of Charles
River Bank’s three branches.
Student-tellers at the Medway
Don’t Let These 5 Misconceptions
Keep You from Making a Will
Have you put off making a
will? If so, you’re not alone. According
to a 2017 survey conducted
by Caring.com, only 42%
of American adults have estate
planning documents, like wills
and living trusts, in place. And
for those with children under
age 18, the percentage is even
lower—36%.
While preparing a will may
not be the most pleasant way to
spend an afternoon, it could be
the most productive—especially
for your heirs. Without a valid
will, your assets could be tied
up in probate court for months,
possibly years. What’s more, the
court will be forced to make decisions
that may not conform to
your wishes.
Why are so many people reluctant
to take this basic—but
important—step? In many cases,
it is the result of five common
misconceptions:
1. I’m not wealthy enough to
need a will.
If you consider the value of
your car, furniture, and other
worldly possessions, you may
be worth more than you
think. Plus, some items may
have sentimental value to
your heirs and will need to
be distributed fairly. You can
also use a will to make legal
arrangements—such as naming
a guardian for your minor
children—that have nothing
to do with your wealth.
2. My spouse will inherit
everything.
In fact, children from a previous
marriage may be entitled
to some assets. Plus, there’s
always a chance that you and
your spouse could pass away
at the same time. If so, the
distribution of assets could
get tricky. Also, be aware that
assets with a designated beneficiary,
such as life insurance,
IRAs, or 401(k)s, may bypass
your spouse if he or she is not
named as the beneficiary. So
check periodically to make
sure your beneficiaries are up
to date.
3. All my assets are
jointly titled.
Legal titles, such as Joint
Tenants with Right of Survivorship
(JTWROS), can be
helpful when it comes to transitioning
financial accounts.
In some cases, however, they
can make things more complicated—especially
if the
joint owner has also passed
away and no further instructions
have been provided.
4. I don’t have any heirs.
If you don’t have any surviving
family members, your assets
can still be put to good
use. You can leave them to a
trusted friend, to your alma
mater, or to a favorite charity.
5. I’m not ready to set my final
wishes in stone.
Updating a will is very common
and, because circumstances
can change, almost
expected. Once the basic
framework is in place, adjustments
are relatively easy to
make and can usually be done
at a modest cost.
Please don’t let these
common misconceptions
keep you from preparing a
will. Given the vital role a
will plays in distributing your
assets, protecting your loved
ones, and making sure your
final wishes are carried out,
now is the time to seek out a
qualified attorney and make
sure you have a legally viable
will in place.
MacKenzie Smith, a Catcher to Watch
By Christopher Tremblay,
Staff Sports Writer
As far back as she can remember,
Millis’ MacKenzie Smith
has always suited up behind the
plate for her softball teams. The
reasoning – ex- Red Sox catcher
Jarrod Saltalamacchia, who
played for the local nine form
2010-2013, was a member of
the 2013 World Series Championship
squad.
“After seeing him play, I
thought that the position looked
like fun,” the Millis junior said.
“Being able to be part of every
play was exciting, and I really like
the position.”
It was around the seventh
grade when she started hearing
the whispers that she was something
special behind the plate.
Although more and more people
were talking about her skills, the
young catcher refused to believe
them until this past year.
Prior to making the high school
team Smith play club ball for the
Metro West Thunder before moving
up to the Bay State Blaze for
better opportunities. Although
a talented catcher as a freshman
Millis already had a catcher and
Coach RJ Maturo decided to play
Smith at second base that season
to get some playing time.
“I had never played the position
in my life,” she said. “I was
a natural born athlete, but it still
took me a chunk of the season
before I was actually comfortable
with the position.”
The Mohawk coach was not
worried in the least.
“She got a lot of playing time
that season,” Maturo said. “It
definitely was a learning curve
for her, but she was a team
player with all the tools and very
coachable.”
In her first full season behind
the plate, the then sophomore
showed that she was truly an
amazing asset to the team, especially
with pitcher Abby Doyle
having some shoulder and elbow
issues. The young catcher picked
up on her problems almost immediately,
but the star pitcher
wasn’t saying anything, despite
having her battery mate continually
sacrificing her body to keep
balls in front of her.
“As the primary catcher, I noticed
something was wrong right
Young Millis softball captain Mackenzie Smith has proven a great asset
to her team.
away, but she was hesitant to fill
me in,” Smith said. “I know my
pitchers and knew something
was wrong so I continued to nag
her until she told me.”
Once Smith knew the reasoning
behind her pitcher’s problems
the two were able to work
on a plan that allowed Doyle to
throw the pitches in a way that
wouldn’t bother her.
“We just adjusted her throwing
techniques,” the Millis
catcher said. “She battled
through it for the benefit of the
team.”
Maturo, once again, knew
that he had full faith in his young
catcher and wasn’t worried.
“Last year she had a tremendous
year behind the plate, especially
with our pitcher battling a
shoulder injury,” the coach said.
“There were a lot of balls in the
dirt, and MacKenzie used her
defensive ability to keep them in
front of her.”
Maturo saw his catcher progress
through the first half of the
season really well, and eventually
teams realized that they could
not run on the Millis catcher and
stayed put due to her strong and
accurate arm.
Entering her second full season
as the team’s starting catcher,
Maturo and the Millis coaching
staff believe the junior captain is
primed for a fantastic season.
“We’re expecting big things
from her this year,” Maturo said.
“Her bat has been coming along,
and she should be a big help to
our offense this season.”
Smith doesn’t consider herself
to be a prolific hitter, but also
doesn’t believe that she is bad.
While saying her hitting is nothing
to brag about, she did have a triple
in her very first varsity game.
Last year, the sophomore batted
.366 with a couple of homeruns.
Coming into this season being
named a captain, she knows that
she has to become more of a
leader despite her reserved nature.
“As the catcher, I should be
the most vocal athlete on the
field,” Smith said. “Although I’m
a rather shy individual, I am feeling
more comfortable with my
teammates and plan on being
more vocal this season.”
In addition to herself overcoming
fear, she is hoping that
the entire team gives 110% each
and every time that they take to
the field, even on lazy day practices.
If the team does that then
she believes that they will once
again earn a spot in the Division
3 South Tournament, where she
is hoping the team exceeds last
year’s appearance. Millis was
able to defeat Bourne 13-5 in the
first round of the playoffs before
falling to West Bridgewater in
their second game 3-1.
With still a little more than a
year remaining in high school,
the Millis junior is hoping that
she will be able to continue to
play softball in college.
“It’s always been a dream of
mine to be part of a softball family
in college,” she said. “I’ve been to
clinics at Boston University, talked
to coaches at Boston College and
UMASS Lowell and taken part in
camps at Assumption.”
Although she would like to
play close to home, having an
interest in Marine Biology, she
could possibly end up going to
school in the south; either way
she is hoping to become part of
a new softball family somewhere.
Millis Girls Quintet Made 2018-19 Season
All about Achievement
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
The girls basketball team at
Millis High fell short of winning
what could have been the
Mohawks’ fourth State championship
but their 2018-19 season
was definitely one for the record
books.
And, their season was truly
unique.
Never before in the school’s
history had a girls or boys basketball
team won a Tri Valley
League championship, and never
before had a squad compiled a
record of 23-2. Also, in Dave
Fallon’s 12 seasons as the Mohawks’
coach, they’ve won three
State crowns and six Sectional
titles. During the last six years, his
teams have won five Sectionals.
For the post-season record,
Millis won four Division 3 Sectional
games, capturing that
championship by defeating
David Prouty, Northbridge, Millbury
and Sutton. Their State
tourney appearance at American
International College in Springfield
ended with a loss to Hoosac
Valley.
The Millis girls, however, left
an indelible memory by turning
“We’ll Make it a Pleasure
Whether it’s Vacation or
Business Travel!”
their 2018-19 season into one of
achievement.
“We’re proud of what we accomplished,’’
Fallon said. “It was
a season of great success. The
girls worked hard and played
to their potential. We’re still the
smallest school in the TVL, but
to win the league title and to have
the best record in school history
speaks to how dynamic the season
was.’’
The Mohawks were at their
best when they utilized an uptempo
offensive style and employed
half-court or full-court
pressure on defense. And, their
strengths were obvious.
“We had athleticism, depth at
guard and a good mix of experience,’’
Fallon emphasized. “Our
players have high basketball IQs,
their court awareness is very
good and their close-knit nature
was a big asset. They bought into
their roles and their priority was
to win, not to compile statistics.’’
Winning the sixth Sectional
crown in Fallon’s 12 years generated
some big smiles, and
the coach was humbled by the
achievement. Although pleased
with the outcome, he was more
delighted for his players.
Each of the four teams Millis
through the Sectional. “Our
“And, our kids meshed and built
superb team chemistry. They
Capturing the school’s first
TVL Small Division championship
was a major achievement.
The Mohawks went unbeaten at
10-0 in the division and clinched
the title by defeating Medway.
“It was awesome to go undefeated,’’
said Fallon. “The girls
were focused, and they also were
consistent. Our last four TVL
games, in order, were against
Westwood, Medfield, Medway
and Dedham. We defeated Westwood
but suffered our only regular-season
loss against Medfield.
Both those games were against
Large Division teams. We then
beat Medway for the championship
and finished league play
by downing Dedham. All four
of those teams qualified for the
playoffs.’’
Looking to the future, the Mohawks
should be able to maintain
their success. Three starters will
return, and the squad will have
experience and leadership. “A
culture of expectation has been
created,’’ Fallon concluded.
Tourney Loss Aside, Medway Boys
Quintet Had a Special Season
By KEN HAMWEY,
Staff Sports Writer
Here’s some advice for fans of
the Medway High boys basketball
team — don’t let the loss to
Westboro in the Division 2 Central
Sectional Tournament lessen
your regard or your respect for
what the Mustangs achieved in
what was a remarkable season.
There’s no doubt that the
73-39 loss to Westboro was a
shock to the system, especially
after Medway led, 26-25, at halftime
and by 30-25 early in the
third quarter. What Medway
coach Eric Copeland said after
the game puts the loss in perspective.
“We got hit by a buzz-saw,’’
he said. “The better team won.’’
Westboro was a senior-laden
group, its three guards could score
and its bench was effective. And,
during the Rangers’ emphatic
48-13 run in the second half,
forward Dominic Casparriello
poured in 16 of his 21 points. “It
felt like they shot 70 percent in
that half,’’ Copeland noted.
As strange as this may sound,
the Mustangs should be proud.
Proud of the way their season
started and finished. Their
overall record of 19-5 included
a 10-game winning streak, the
championship of the Walpole
Holiday Tournament, the Tri
Valley League’s Small Division
title and two decisive triumphs
(Burncoat and Groton-Dunstable)
in the Sectional tourney.
“We accomplished some
things, because the kids bonded
well and core values were embraced,’’
Copeland said. “The
boys realized how hard they had
to work to get results and they
accepted accountability. They
fully understood what our staff
stressed — the next drill, the next
practice, the next possession, the
next game. That philosophy put
us in a position to overcome any
adversity.’’
The Walpole tourney during
the Christmas break provided a
glimpse that good things could
be on the horizon. The Mustangs
defeated a traditionally strong Bay
State League squad in Walpole,
then won the tourney by downing
Scituate, which later advanced to
the Division 2 South Sectional
semifinals.
After a regular-season loss to
Dover-Sherborn, which won the
Division 3 Sectional, the Mustangs
rolled to 10 straight wins,
one of which included a road
victory over Bellingham that
clinched the TVL crown.
“Eleven of our 12 players said
at the start of the season that winning
the league title was a goal,’’
Copeland recalled. “We beat Bellingham
which had a senior group
and some good sophomores. The
league has quality teams. Five of
the six teams in our division were
in the playoffs. The kids displayed
an unselfish style and did the little
things that lead to success.’’
Then came the sectional where
Medway posted a pair of decisive
victories. Burncoat was defeated,
63-32, and the Mustangs topped
Groton-Dunstable, 52-43, before
bowing to Westboro.
“Our team did exceed expectations,’’
Copeland said. “It was
a group that cared for each other
and understood that being mediocre
was not okay. They were upset
after the Westboro game and
that’s because they had invested
their emotions and their physical
ability into a long season. It’s supposed
to hurt when it’s over. For
me, I was pleased at how coachable
they were and how willing
they were to be pushed.’’
Copeland admitted that two
early-season victories over Dedham
and Norton provided a clue
that the Mustangs had a special
group. And, that pair of threepoint
triumphs was evidence that
Medway would have no trouble
adjusting or transitioning to a new
coach. “Dedham was the defending
TVL Small champion and
Norton was the defending TVL
Large Division champ,’’ Copeland
noted.
When he took the coaching
reins, Copeland listed four
goals he was hoping would be
achieved. He wanted to build a
program that was respected for its
work ethic; he wanted to have a
strong relationship with the youth
program; a TVL Small Division
title was a third objective; and
qualifying for the playoffs was the
fourth. Every one of those goals
was achieved.
Copeland, who’s coached
as an assistant at Medway and
Franklin, has a message for
Medway fans going forward. It’s
about expectations. “We’ve got a
capable core group returning,’’
he said. “But, they’ll be a target
on our backs. We have to manage
expectations, and I hope that in
November our guys understand
the challenge ahead. Expectations
will definitely be high.’’
Medway High boys’ basketball reached great heights this year, just
falling short of the sectional title, but players now know the hard work
needed, and they’ll be a force next season.
Millis Spikers Aiming for Return to Tournament
Millis boys’ volleyball has strength among its players this year, as well as a team spirit.
The Millis High boys’ volleyball
team always seems like a
sure thing when playoff berths
are being announced. For the
last 13 years, coach Jay Guinan’s
Mohawks have participated in
the tourney 10 times, but, unfortunately,
last season wasn’t one of
them after the Mohawks finished
with a 7-12 record.
“It’s like being a Patriots fan
and having high expectations
in the playoffs,’’ Guinan said.
“Tournament volleyball at Millis
is an expectation.’’
When one of Guinan’s squads
fails to earn a playoff berth, what
seems to follow are three or four
consecutive seasons that include
the Mohawks in the post-season
mix. This year, the goals are similar
to what they’ve been in the
past. Improving daily and qualifying
for the tourney are highpriority
objectives.
How quickly Millis can
achieve those goals may be a bit
more difficult to forecast this season
because the Mohawks have
left the Western Alliance. They’re
now a member of the newlyformed
Tri Valley League (the
conference is 53 years old, but it
never included boys’volleyball).
The league’s members, besides
Millis, are Medfield, Bellingham,
Norton, Nipmuc, Norwood and
Milford.
“Milford could be the team to
beat,’’ Guinan said. “They’ve got
a strong tradition. But, there really
isn’t any squad in the league
that’s automatically No. 1. I’d
rate us to finish in the middle of
the pack.’’
The Mohawks, nevertheless,
have a roster that’s got some
capable competitors with some
well-defined strengths.
“We’ve got some size and
quickness, our attack is progressing
and we’ve got blocking
capability,’’ said Guinan, who’s
been coaching volleyball for 30
years. “The team’s volleyball
IQ is good, and we’ve got some
experience. One area where we
need to focus on is our mental
preparation. That means getting
to know the competition and
becoming educated about the
sport. A big key is a player’s first
touch on the ball. It has to be his
best, whether it’s a pass, a block a
serve or a set.’’
Guinan’s nucleus for the new
campaign is comprised of one senior
and five juniors.
Senior Kyle Quinzani is ticketed
for duty at either middle or
left hitter. “Kyle’s main strength
is his jumping ability,’’ Guinan
said. “He blocks well, his arm
speed is quick and his power
game is good. He’s in the six-foot
range.’’
Junior Evan Simmons, whose
brother Chris was a quality
player during the 2015 and 2016
seasons, will be counted on as a
right-side hitter. “Evan is about
5-foot-11,’’ Guinan said. “He’s
got good court sense and he’s got
great hands. On the varsity since
his freshman year, his volleyball
IQ is high.’’
Junior Josh Bergman is a
John’s
family owned and operated for 45 years
5-foot-11 outside hitter who also
has been on the team since his
freshman year. “Josh has power,
good court sense and he passes
effectively,’’ Guinan said. “He’s
very quick and he’s a smart
player who’s skilled and technically
sound.’’
Junior Lucas Graham, a sixfooter
who competed at setter last
year, could be utilized this season
as either a right or left-side hitter.
“He’s got power, quickness and
a high volleyball IQ,’’ Guinan
said. “Lucas can block capably
and is progressing as an attacker.
He’s been on the team since his
freshman year.’’
Marcus Vorpahl is another
junior who’ll be counted on at
setter. “Marcus has good hands
and his court awareness is excellent,’’
Guinan noted. “His disposition
is great. He dictates the
tempo, is cool under pressure
and he makes good choices. A
major strength is his first-touch
ability. It’s solid.’’
Rounding out the nucleus is
5-foot-11 junior Nolan Schmitz,
who’ll play either middle or left
hitter. “Nolan has decent arm
speed, moves quickly, and reads
blocks well,’’ Guinan said. “He
scored points last year, and we’ll
need his offensive game to keep
improving.’’
The reserves include Andrew
Finley, Sam Elias, Tyler
Gelasco, Sydney Price, and Max
Jakubowski.
Guinan, who’s coached at
four other high schools and three
colleges, relies on an athletic philosophy
that focuses on winning,
reaching one’s potential and having
fun. “We practice and compete
to win and if players are
improving and also having fun,
then that spells success,’’ Guinan
said. “Sports teach valuable life
lessons, like accountability, leadership
and overcoming adversity
but they also help a player to
keep striving for achievement.
And, achievement occurs when
there’s discipline and commitment.’’
A firm believer that volleyball
requires intelligence, Guinan says
“it’s 10 percent physical and 90
percent mental.’’ So, when he’s
assembling a roster, he looks for
more than the obvious aspects
(height, skills and athleticism). He
aims to add players who are likable,
smart and sincere. “When
you have players with no diva
attitudes, they tend to work hard
and have a sincere respect for
their teammates, the school and
the sport,’’ he emphasized.
Besides competing against
the teams in the TVL, Millis has
scheduled non-league matches
against some of its rivals from
the Western Alliance. Other opponents
include Xaverian, Boston
College High, St. John’s Prep
of Danvers, St. John’s of Shrewsbury,
Assabet and King Philip.
For 2019, the Mohawks will
be aiming for a bounce-back season
— a campaign that gets them
back to familiar territory. And,
at Millis, familiar territory is all
about the tournament landscape.

their efforts, working with the
The information gathered
On Wednesday, April 10, at
7 p.m., in the Norfolk Public Library
Community Room, the
Garden Club of Norfolk and
the Millis Garden Club will host
a program designed to help you
grow the beautiful roses you always
dreamed of having in your
garden.
In this free program, Six
Simple Steps to Successful Rose
Gardening, Mike and Angelina
Chute will explain everything you
need to know in six easy-to-follow
steps that will take the mystery
out of rose gardening. The program
will include plenty of tips
and personal anecdotes from the
Chutes’ more than twenty-five
years of rose gardening experience,
demonstrating how easy it
is to grow great roses in New England.
You will see photos of their
rose garden and learn which roses
are best for our climate.
“It’s easy to grow beautiful
roses in your home garden once
you know how,” says Mike Chute.
Following the program, the
Chutes will be available to sign
copies of their books, “Roses
for New England: A Guide to
Sustainable Rose Gardening”
and “Rose Gardening Season by
Season: A Journal for Passionate
Gardener.”
The Chutes are American
Rose Society Master Rosarians
and Mike is an American Rose
Society Horticulture Judge. They
are founding members and past
presidents of the Rhode Island
Rose Society and enjoy exhibiting
roses, competing in rose
shows throughout New England
and Montreal, and sharing their
knowledge with others as speakers
and consultants.
Greater Boston Association of Realtors
Recognizes Local Realtor
Medway - The Greater Boston
Real Estate Board recently
recognized Paul Rao for his 40
years as a Realtor® at their traveling
REALTOUR event for the
MetroWest region. The presentation
was made by James Major,
President of the Greater Boston
Association of Realtors, at the
Crown Plaza hotel in Natick.
Rao started with Page Realty
as an agent in 1979. He later purchased
the firm with his brother,
Al in 1986. The company was
affiliated with Prudential Real
Estate until 2013 and is currently
a member of the Berkshire Hathaway
HomeServices network.
Rao recently sold his share of
the 56-year-old company and
relinquished management responsibilities
to focus solely on
working with buyers and sellers
to help them achieve their real
estate goals.
“I am blessed to have had
this fulfilling career and helped
hundreds of families achieve the
‘American Dream’ of owning
their own home,” said Rao. “My
company has helped well over
10,000 families purchase and sell
homes over the last several decades,
which I take a lot of pride
in. I look forward to continuing
this proud tradition of making
dreams come true.”
To provide the most comprehensive
service possible, Rao has
partnered with one of Medway’s
top upcoming agents, Kim Ellis.
The RE Team brings a wealth of
experience and success to their
clients. Ellis is a highly respected
Realtor® who strives to educate,
advise, support, and guide all her
clients through the real estate
process. Her success is based on
client trust as she gives 110% to
identify her clients’ needs and
help them reach their goals. “I
am really excited about working
with Kim, as she encompasses a
SOLD
lot of the same values that I hold
dear. She really goes above and
beyond for her clients,” stated
Rao.
Together, Rao and Ellis form a
dynamic team, working together
to ensure the home buying and
selling processes go smoothly.
One of them is always reachable
and responsive, delivering strong
real estate skill sets to best meet
their clients’ needs. Nothing succeeds
like success, and nothing
takes the place of experience.
Client Testimonial to Laina Kaplan:
“Laina was amazing from day one; she’s fantastic to work with and we would recommend her to
anyone looking to buy and/or sell their home! She is organized, detail oriented, in constant contact,
an invaluable asset in the home buying and selling process. Thanks to her the sale of our home was
as smooth as could be, and we were thrilled with every aspect of the process.....Her experience in
the industry and her calm, confident, reassuring attitude was greatly appreciated. We can’t thank
Laina enough for all of her hard work on our sale & new home purchase. She truly provides excellent
