lockportlegend.com Election 2019 the lockport legend | April 11, 2019 | 9 Batusich to join LTFPD Board, race for second seat too close to call Max Lapthorne, Editor One of the spots on the Lockport Township Fire Protection District Board of Trustees will be going to John Batusich, while the race for the second spot between Henry Meader and Rhonda Casagrande is too close to call as of press time Monday, April 8. In the race for two open seats on the board, Batusich received 27.93 percent (2,608) of the 9,337 total votes cast while Henry Meader received 24.33 percent (2,272) and Rhon- election to the Board. “I’m very pleased that I won,” Batusich said Batusich Meader Casagrande in a phone interview da Casagrande appeared with The Legend. “A lot on 24.13 percent (2,253) of firefighters went out and of ballots, according to worked hard for me. Results are to be official on April 23. But should the election swing in her favor, she said she would focus on allocating taxpayer dollars in a way that best suits district staff and residents. “First and foremost, I would be happy to work with all of the trustees that are currently there and are going to be coming in,” Casagrande said. “I look forward to really taking care of the taxpayers and making sure the monies that they pay in tax money is allocated correctly and properly.” Incumbent Gillogly notches decisive win in Second Ward Alderman race Max Lapthorne, Editor Incumbent J.R. Gillogly earned a resounding victory over challenger Daniel Kida Gillogly in the race for Lockport Second Ward Alderman, according to unofficial results on the Will County Clerk’s website. With all six precincts reporting, Gillogly received 74.32 percent of votes, while Kida received 25.68 percent. There were 662 votes cast across the six precincts with 492 going to Gillogly and 170 to Kida. Gillogly, a 1976 graduate of Taft School and 1980 graduate of Lockport Township High School, was elected to the Lockport City Council in 2015, and said he thinks the voters’ belief in the direction Lockport is headed is why he was re-elected. “I think people are happy the way Lockport is going right now, and I’m glad to be a part of it going forward,” he said in an election-night phone interview with The Legend. The three biggest issues Gillogly sees the City of Lockport facing are aging infrastructure, continued development along 159th Street and downtown and the congestion on the 9th Street bridge, as previously reported by The Legend. Lobes wins Lockport Third Ward Alderman election Alex Ivanisevic Assistant Editor Incumbent Mark Lobes b e s t e d challenger Joseph Krier in the race for a fouryear term Lobes as City of Lockport Third Ward Alderman. A total of 351 votes were cast, and with all seven precincts reporting, Lobes won with a total of 224 votes, 62.82 percent of the total votes cast. Krier finished with 127 votes, or 36.18 percent, according to unofficial results from the Will County Clerk’s website. Lobes, a 40-yearold high school teacher and coach, said in a previous interview with The Legend that he is looking to continue the work of the current City Council in terms of growth and development. “I think I ran a very positive and well-educated campaign,” Lobes said in a phone interview with The Legend. “Every step of the way I told people what I believe and what I want to see happen in Lockport. I am happy with the results and look forward to the next four years.” Lobes is particularly looking forward to being a part of the revitalization efforts in downtown Lockport. “I think we are on a positive path with that,” he said. “... I hope to further earn [Lockport residents’] trust and respect over the next four years and I am always willing to talk.” Numbers show low turnout for election in Will County T.J. Kremer III Contributing Editor Voters stayed home in large numbers for the April 2 elections. Of the 439,720 voters registered in Will County, only 57,092 showed up to the polls, according to data from the Will County Clerk’s Office. That’s just 12.98 percent of registered voters. According to John Pelissero, professor of political science at Loyola University in Chicago, voter turnout in this region typically hovers around 20 percent for municipal elections, such as the April 2 one; however, Will County voters topped 20 percent just once since 2005, the last year available for data from the Will County Clerk’s Office. That was in 2005, when 25.47 percent placed their ballots. In fact, only three precincts in our coverage area topped the 20 percent threshold: Frankfort Precinct 025 at 27.26 percent; Frankfort Precinct 012 at 23.94 percent; and Frankfort Precinct 003 at 20.9 percent. The 12.98 percent for this year’s election was down 6.62 percentage points from 2017. Turnout for other years registered as: 15.01 percent in 2015; 18.13 percent in 2013; 18.91 percent in 2011; 18.19 percent in 2009; and 18.18 percent in 2007. The low turnout was unexpected, Pelissero said, because turnout usually goes up when controversial and contentious races occur, as was the case in several towns with referendums on the ballot and competitive battles for local board seats. Citizen apathy, combined with a lack of knowledge of candidates in races, could have been a factor for the low voting numbers, Pelissero said.
