NEWBURYPORT
– Don’t be surprised
this week to find
some exciting new
books lying about
the city on benches
in parks, along the
waterfront and in
public buildings
like City Hall. Feel
free to take them,
Called “Books on the Loose,”
the free book promotion is the
“Congratulations!” the note
with the free book states. “You’ve
caught a Book on the Loose. We’re
all about celebrating literature,
sharing with others and placing
books in unusual places for the
Books on the Loose
outlandish an idea it
seemed to some at the time
– this concept of women
gaining the right to vote in
elections. In one of history’s
great thrillers, the battle to
ratify the 19th Amendment,
almost a hundred years ago,
came down to single vote,
a single male legislator and
— crucially — a single
dear, darling, determined
mother,” the festival web
site states.
In her stirring treatment of
winning suffrage in America
Weiss details the history,
culture and politics that
made the quest so difficult,
including the racism that
came very close to defeating
the cause.
Margot Lee Shetterly,
author of the bestseller
Hidden Figures, wrote
of Weiss’s book,“Anyone
interested in the history of
our country’s ongoing fight
to put its founding values
into practice – as well as
those seeking the roots of
current political fault lines
– would be well-served by
picking up Elaine Weiss’s
The Woman’s Hour.”
Those attending the
opening ceremony are
encouraged to wear a yellow
rose, the symbol of women’s
suffrage.
After the opening
ceremony, the festival moves
to one of its signature events,
Dinner with Authors, at
7:30 p.m. at the Masonic
Center, 31 Green St. For
$50, participants dine and
enjoy conversations with
many of the authors. Tickets
can be purchased on line at
newburyportliteraryfestival.
org or by sending a check to
the Newburyport Literary
Association, Box 268,
Newburyport, MA 01950.
The popular Breakfast with
the Poets starts Saturday
morning at 8:30 a.m. at
the Central Congregational
Church with David
Davis, A.M. Juster, Jose
Edmundo Ocampo Reyes,
Toni Treadway and Anton
Yakovlev.
Throughout the day on
Saturday, the festival will
feature a wide range of
authors and poets, including
authors Russell Banks, Joyce
Maynard, Rhina Espaillat,
Andre Dubus III, Nana
Kwame Adjei-Brenyah,
Elizabeth Elo, Eleanor
Lipman and Hank Phillippi
Ryan.
The short story will be
highlighted in several
sessions, including one with
Banks at 10:30 a.m. at the
Old South Church.
“Every time we mention
that Russell Banks is coming
this year, people come out of
the woodwork to talk about
him,” said festival founder
Vicki Henrickson.
Banks will read from his
short story collection, The
Angel on the Roof and
A Permanent Member of
the Family. A two-time
finalist for the Pulitzer
Prize, Banks will join Steve
Yarbrough, author of The
Unmade World and The
Oxygen Man, to discuss the
difference between writing
short stories and novels
and the process of adapting
short stories to film.
Also Andre Dubus III and
Peter Orner will discuss
the writings of Dubus’
father, Andre II, and how it
influenced their thoughts.
Their presentation will be
at 2:30 p.m. at the Central
Congregational Church.
At 1 p.m. in the same
venue, Dubus will also
discuss his latest work, Gone
So Long.
The closing ceremony will
be “something different,”
according to the event web
site. Representatives from
local book clubs will discuss
the genesis of their clubs
and some of the favorite
books they have read over
the years. One of the clubs
is celebrating its 100th
anniversary this year.
Founding sponsors of the
festival are the Newburyport
Bank and the Institution
for Savings. Host sponsors
are: Riley and Associates,
Booked, Newburyport and
Newbury Cultural Councils,
Nunan diversification
is a growing trend in the
many farms and
months. Many have created
corn mazes and fruit picking
to draw in more customers.
The Garden Golf center
has been a hit. Designed
with no dinosaurs or
windmills, the Nunan course
name some. There will also be lots of other sterling and coin silver.
As with any multi-generational home there is an interesting
collection of jewelry with diamond rings, a string of Victorian gold
beads and several pocket watches. Among the clocks are a Regencystyle
Eliot of London Banjo, a Chelsea banjo and ships bell clock.
Furniture highlights are a Queen Ann Tip Top Table, a Salem game
table and an 18th Empire game table.
“This was a true Yankee family,” said McInnis, “They rarely threw
anything useful away. We will sell everything you would expect from
a house occupied by the same family for well over a century. There are
no additions to the sale.”
Collectors and dealers will appreciate the wide range of small
objects for sale from ambrotypes to an Emeralite Lamp, to Havilland
Limoges China and a Windsor armchair in red paint. There are also
Native American wool mats and blankets, a Chinese ivory puzzle ball
on stand and 20 century Hi Fi stereo systems.
“This will be a live old-fashioned auction,” added McInnis. “There
will be no internet bidding. There will mostly likely be something to
interest everyone.”
The auction is open to the public. There will be a preview on the
day of the sale beginning at 8 a.m. Please visit the McInnis website to
As Plovers Return, Refuge Beach Closed
The ocean beach at Parker River National Wildlife Refuge will be
closed to all public access beginning on Monday, April 1st in order
to provide undisturbed nesting habitat for the piping plover, a small
shorebird that is listed as threatened on the federal endangered
species list. A small section of beach, accessible via the parking lot
1 boardwalk, will remain open to the public. Sections of the beach
may be reopened in late July if it is determined that such action will
not be detrimental to the plovers’ nesting success. Generally, the
entire beach is reopened by mid to late August after the last plover
chick fledges.
Visitors are reminded that other areas of the refuge will remain
open including the Salt Pannes Wildlife Observation Area, North
Pool Overlook, Hellcat Wildlife Observation Area and associated
interpretive trail, Pines Trail, Stage Island Pool Observation Tower
and Overlook and the Lot 5 boardwalk (which provides views of, but
no access to, the beach). Due to the popularity of the refuge, vehicle
capacity is periodically reached with a subsequent temporary closure.
An early arrival helps visitors avoid this inconvenience. A daily fee
of $5/vehicle, $2 walk-on or bicycle, remains in effect, with a $20
annual pass also available. Also, other beaches are available in the
area including those in Newbury and Newburyport on the northern
end of Plum Island, Salisbury Beach State Reservation in Salisbury,
and the beach at Crane Memorial Reservation in Ipswich.

Fifth Annual Conservation Film Festival April 12th – 14th
Officials at the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge have announced details about the Fifth Annual
Conservation Film Festival, which will take place Friday evening, April 12th thru Sunday afternoon, April 14th.
The free public event will take place at the refuge’s visitor center and headquarters complex in Newburyport. A
diverse selection of award-winning, conservation-related films from across the world will be presented on the big
screen in the visitor center auditorium. This year’s attendees will further benefit from the recent installation of
a new laser projector and surround sound system!
Films that will be screened during the festival focus on a broad range of important and timely conservation
topics. This year’s films include:
• Lobster War: The Fight Over the World’s Richest Fishing Ground is about a climate-fueled conflict between
the United States and Canada over waters that both countries have claimed since the end of the Revolutionary
War. The disputed 277 square miles of sea, known as the Gray Zone, were traditionally fished by US
lobstermen. But as the Gulf of Maine has warmed faster than nearly any other body of water on the planet,
the area’s previously modest lobster population has surged. As a result, Canadians have begun to assert their
sovereignty.
• Love and Bananas: An Elephant Story: Independent Spirit and MTV nominated actress, Ashley Bell and a
team of elephant rescuers, led by world renowned Asian elephant conservationist Sangdeaun Lek Chailert,
embark on a daring 48-hour mission 500 miles across Thailand to rescue a 70-year old captive blind Asian
elephant and bring her to freedom. “Love & Bananas: An Elephant Story” is a heartwarming and hopeful film
that exposes the plight of Asian elephants and the people who work tirelessly to save them.
• Saving Atlantis is the first documentary to take a deep dive into one of the most consequential issues of our
time: the dramatic decline of global coral reef ecosystems and the impact on human populations that depend
on them. Coral reefs are one of the world’s most diverse habitats. They are often called “the rainforests of the
ocean,” but the rapid acceleration of coral bleaching events around the world is jeopardizing their future.
• The Serengeti Rules won the prestigious ACFF “Green Fire” award. Beginning in the 1960s, a small band
of young scientists headed out into the wilderness, driven by an insatiable curiosity about how nature works.
Immersed in some of the most remote and spectacular places on Earth—from the majestic Serengeti to the
Amazon jungle, from the Arctic Ocean to Pacific tide pools—they discovered a single set of rules that govern
all life.
• Bird of Prey: The Philippine Eagle is a bird of extremes. It’s the world’s largest and rarest eagle, found only in
the Philippines. Fewer than 800 individuals remain today, and the future of these iconic raptors — and of an
untold number of other species — is tied to the fate of the Philippines’ last fragments of old-growth forest.
In 1977, world-renowned cinematographer Neil Rettig filmed the first images of the Philippine Eagle in the
wild, transforming the bird into a national symbol. But today, with a rapidly expanding human population
facing serious political, economic, and environmental turmoil, the eagle’s plight has fallen out of public
consciousness. “Bird of Prey” follows Neil’s return to the Philippines as he embarks on a grueling expedition
alongside a small but devoted group determined to protect the eagle. Together, they answer the question:
What will it take to save a species from extinction?
• The Vanishing Caribou Rainforest is a cinematic journey into the tragically threatened world of endangered
mountain caribou, their home in the world’s largest remaining inland temperate rainforest, and the critical
human choices that will ultimately decide the fate of this stunning ecosystem. With the failure of agencies in
the U.S. and Canada to regulate industrial resource extraction effectively, honor the treaty rights of indigenous
peoples, and protect the integrity of the natural systems of this region, this film gives voice to First Nations,
scientists, foresters, conservationists, and recreationists attempting to
chart a new path forward before it is too late.
• High Tide in Dorchester is a film that encourages discussions and actions
concerning sea level rise, erosion and climate change in Dorchester
County, MD. The film creates a powerful, intimate story that looks at
a worsening global threat through the lens of Chesapeake Bay’s most
vulnerable county.
All film festival screenings are free and open to the public. Seating in
the visitor center auditorium is limited to 85 and will be filled on a first
come, first served basis. A complete film festival schedule is available on
the refuge web site: http://www.fws.gov/refuge/parker_river/. For further
information, please contact the refuge at (978) 465-5753.
Health & Wellness
BY J. PETER ST. CLAIR, DMD
In this age of reality TV and
other unrealistic propaganda,
many people, including
teenagers, are making changes
to improve their appearance.
And for teenagers, physical
appearance is an important
element of peer pressure.
When it comes to the desire
for whiter teeth however, age
does play a role.
Whether teeth whitening is
done by a dentist or with overthe-counter
products, no one
under the age of 14 should be
whitening their teeth. Even
though all the permanent
teeth may be in by this age,
teeth are still developing.
Once the permanent teeth
have erupted into the mouth,
called active eruption, you
may notice that the teeth
look short. It takes time for
the gum tissue to recede,
called passive eruption, and
the teeth to get to their final
size.
In some people, this passive
eruption doesn’t completely
happen and the teeth still
look short. Sometimes this
A recent newspaper story told of
two senior women who were coaxed
into an experiment e-filing their taxes
on their cellphone and tablet.
E-filing apparently is becoming
more and more popular, as 126
million people e-filed for the past tax
year, and 85 million of those received
faster direct deposit refunds because
of it.
Would I do this, e-file on a
handheld electronic device? No, I
would not.
Brighter Smiles...
AGE BEFORE BEAUTY
is referred to as a “gummy”
smile. There are many reasons
for showing excess gum tissue
and the solutions for that
are a subject for a different
column.
However, if teeth are
bleached prior to this passive
eruption completely taking
place, the teeth can end up
being two-toned. Although
this can usually be corrected,
it is best to wait until the
entire eruption process
is completed. Once an
adolescent has reached 15 or
16, if a parent and their child
decide that they would like
the teeth to be whiter, they
can discuss the options with
their dentist.
There are many different
ways to whiten the teeth.
Some of the over-the-counter
products will work to some
degree. They work especially
well on young teeth or
those that are more yellow.
However, the safest and most
effective way to whiten the
teeth, especially teeth that are
older or greyer, is under the
supervision of a dentist.
Many people will Google
products they can buy over
the internet to whiten their
teeth. If you have ever done
this, you know there are many
products that are sold with
the addition of an ultraviolet
Senior Scene
Filing Your Taxes on a Cellphone
In all honesty, I did e-file once
years ago, sending my information
directly to the Internal Revenue
Service with the push of a computer
keyboard button. It was the only time
in all these years that something went
wrong, and the IRS didn’t receive all
the numbers. Some months later
I received mail from them saying I
owed additional taxes. Once I ran
the numbers again and called them
on the phone, it was clear that one
entry never made it across the wires.
After I sent the paper version of the
tax return, all was well, but it caused
grief and took time to sort out. Now
I only send paper versions done on
a computer where I’m more certain
of the security software, hardwired to
the wall.
light. Clinical studies show
that this type of bleaching
is no more effective than
traditional whitening with
trays and gel. The light may
cause more dehydration in
the teeth which will produce
an appearance that the teeth
are lighter, but this is usually
not sustainable.
My experience is that
professional tray bleaching
with properly made trays and
proper technique is the most
effective. Some patients will
be able to achieve dramatic
results in only a week of
daily bleaching. Others may
require longer periods of time
to achieve the desired result.
Advances in methods and
materials with the whitening
process have come a long way.
There are predictable ways to
lighten even the darkest teeth.
There is nothing wrong with
wanting lighter teeth.
Dr. St. Clair maintains
a private dental practice in
Rowley and Newburyport
dedicated to health-centered
family dentistry. If there are
certain topics you would like to
see written about or questions
you have please email them to
him at jpstclair@stclairdmd.
com. You can view all
previously written columns
at www.jpeterstclairdentistry.
com/blog.
The specific reasons I won’t use a
handheld electronic device to file my
taxes are these: 1) Handheld devices
usually don’t have adequate security
software installed on them, and if
installed, it’s not familiar to the user.
2) If the device is hooked up via a
home WiFi, the router connection
might not be encrypted. If you don’t
know the difference between WEP
and WPA/WPA2, ask someone for
help with your router to make sure
you’re not on WEP, which can be
cracked by someone walking by
outside.
We seniors are targets in so many
instances already. Beware giving
identity thieves another way to access
your personal information.
