Silver Cross Hospital
to get major expansion
JESSIE MOLLOY
Freelance Reporter
The New Lenox Village
Board of Trustees approved
the village’s new budget
and signed off on plans for
a major expansion to Silver
Cross Hospital at its Monday,
April 8 meeting.
Finance Director Kim
Auchstetter shared key
figures and a number of
upcoming projects for the
2019-2020 fiscal year,
which begins on May 1,
during a public hearing at
the start of the meeting.
Revenues for the village
are projected at
$51,956,697, while expenditures
are budgeted for
$48,215,870. Both of these
figures represent an increase
over the 2018-2019
budget, which included
$48,672,215 in revenues
and $45,718,357 in expenditures.
Auchstetter noted that
the increase in revenue is
due to an anticipated increase
in sales tax revenue
and building permit fees,
while the expenditures will
be used on a number of
capital projects including
the design and conveyance
of a regional wastewater
treatment facility, which
will cost over $5.9 million,
and two projects to replace
sewer and water mains on
Route 30 which will cost
just under $7 million total.
Other projects highlighted
by Auchstetter include
the completion of the
Nelson Road bicycle trail,
construction on the Route
30 Metra Station, speaker
upgrades for the Commons
band shell, the first phase
of a three-year Christmas
light upgrade, Wood Street
drainage improvements, a
water main installation for
Forest and Wood Streets
and engineering for work
at the corner of Haven and
Cedar Road.
The exact cost on the
Metra project has yet to be
determined. The total cost
of the other projects is budgeted
at $1,092,000.
Going into the 2019-
2020 fiscal year the general
fund will have a surplus of
$7.261 million, which is
also expected to increase to
$7.261 million by this time
next year.
The board voted unanimously
to approve the budget,
as well as amendments
to the 2018-2019 budget
to more accurately reflect
spending. The full 2019-
2020 budget will be posted
on the village website soon.
Silver Cross expansion
Silver Cross Hospital received
approval from the
State of Illinois in December
to establish an openheart
surgery program.
Surgeries will commence
at the New Lenox campus
in May, but because of
space constraints, operating
rooms are booked late
into the evening with some
starting as late as 8 p.m. To
remedy this, the hospital
plans to construct a new,
30,000 square-foot addition
to the Procedural Care Unit
to house the new cardiac facility.
The expansion will include
two new operating
rooms, two recovery rooms,
as well as a special “hybrid
room” outfitted with specialized
imaging equipment
and which can be used for
minimally invasive surgeries.
The lower floor of the
structure will include a 14-
bed cardiac care unit and
will be connected to the surgical
floor by an elevator.
Prior to receiving openheart
approval, the hospital
was able to perform smaller
cardiac procedures but had
to send patients to neighboring
hospitals in order to undergo
open heart surgeries.
“We’ve had to ship a
lot of people out, but now
they can stay in their home
hospital, which will reduce
stress and anxiety for many
patients,” said Geoff Tryon,
Vice President of Operations
at Silver Cross.
The board voted unanimously
to approve the site
plan for the addition and
construction will begin this
spring. The project has an
anticipated completion date
of August 2020.
In conjunction with the
approval the board also
voted to approve a surety
amount on the project of
$66,748.75 to ensure the
hospital complete the required
public improvements
and landscaping by April of
2021.
Once the project is complete
it will enable Silver
Cross to develop a structural
heart program, which
will use minimally invasive
catheter-based technology
to treat life-threatening
valve disorders and structural
heart defects.
“I’m thrilled to see you
expand,” said Mayor Tim
Baldermann, “It’s wonderful
that we’ll have access to
these services right here in
New Lenox.”
