Russel was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Vietnam, and was a member and past commander of VFW Bremen Post 2791 in Tinley Park. He was a longtime pipefitter with Hill Mechanical and Union Local 597. tinleyjunction.com life & Arts the Tinley Junction | April 18, 2019 | 17 Brew & Vine brings decade of community engagement Amanda Del Buono Freelance Reporter Tinley Park Chamber of Commerce hosted its 10th annual Brew & Vine festival on Saturday, April 13, at the Tinley Park Convention Center. The largest event to date, this year’s festival highlighted 75 local and national beer, wine and food vendors and more than 3,000 attendees. In addition to the wide selection of beer, wine and food, this year’s event included live music provided by Tinley Park’s The Walk-Ins and Chicago’s The Hat Guys. Throughout the past decade, Tinley Park’s Brew & Vine Fest went from being a shot in the dark to the chamber’s most important fundraising event. “The first year, we started with 50 percent of the convention center [prior to the expansion], and then we moved to 75 percent, and for the past five years or so, we’ve taken up the entire convention center,” said Geena Calomino, event coordinator for the Chamber of Commerce. “Ten years ago, we put this on as a last chance for the Chamber of Commerce, because we were low on funds, so we did this just in hopes of getting back in the green again. Now, it’s one of the biggest fundraisers for the Chamber, and we’re so thankful for all of the attendees who come out and the vendors and all others involved in the event.” The proceeds from the event help support the scholarships that the Chamber gives to three Tinley Park high school students each year, as well as the chamber’s other efforts to showcase its members to the community. As the event has grown larger with each passing year, the Chamber has focused on keeping it true to its roots: showcasing breweries, wineries and eateries. “As a Chamber of Commerce with many members, we like to showcase our local businesses, and this is a great way to give our vendors and breweries exposure,” Calomino said. “We’ve really just tried to stay true to the event and really make it a memorable one for all of our attendees.” After each event, the chamber takes any feedback it receives to heart. Not only has it added more vendors each year, but it’s also focused on doing so while expanding the variety of options available. “People don’t just want beer. They want ciders and hard sodas, and so on, so we’ve tried to get more vendors here,” Calomino said. Food and beverage vendors at the event ranged from savory to sweet. On the sweet side, Tinley Park’s Creative Cakes bakery was at the event again this year offering a variety of mini cupcakes and cake pops. Erin Fahey, who was running the bakery’s booth at the event, said Creative Cakes enjoys participating in this festival because they’re able to interact with their customers outside of the bakery. “We’re one of the bigger bakeries in the Tinley Park area, and people like to see us here. We get to see a lot of our customers,” she said. For Todd Randall, owner of Tinley Park’s 350 Brewing Co., Brew & Vine offers an opportunity for exposure to the local community. The brewery has been open for five years and has had a presence at the festival from its start. “We’re right across the street [from the convention center], so we see our local people,” he said. “Every time we’re here, at least 20 people ask where we are, and they had to pass us to get here. People just don’t know and it’s great to get to educate them.” The always-growing variety at the event is what continues to bring Chicago Heights resident Angie Rizzi back to the event every year. “I like that you can sample so many different things,” she said. Rizzi said that for the past three years she’s attended the event with members of her family because there’s always something for everyone. She added that she has gone to several tastings, but particularly appreciates that the Brew & Vine also offers food. “We have a group of about 20 today. Our cousins want to get together, and at a restaurant, it can be hard to talk in such a big group, but here we can break up and have a meeting place where we can talk, and there’s something for everyone,” she said. Orland Park’s Megan Horsch attended for the first time this year to experience the variety. “I saw all the different vendors for beer and wine, and thought it’d be a good opportunity to try a lot of different things in one location,” she said. “I’m very impressed with the variety of food and drinks available.” The Chamber of Commerce’s next big event will be Tinley Park Oktoberfest, which will take place September 6-8 at the 80th Avenue Metra Train Station.
