I think it’s fair to say that there’s been
a lot of tension in the air over the past
few weeks, which is perhaps inevitable
given the Parliamentary pantomime.
Hopefully this month it’s time to
wake up and smell the blossom – and
there’s no one like Mother Nature to
cheer you up. On Sunday, 5th May, it’s
International Dawn Chorus Day. I’m
an earlybird at the best of times but
I’ll be up with the lark to enjoy this –

101-year-old Indian woman has just put me to
shame as she ran the 200m race and another
lady in her eighties has just won the hurdles.
It is truly amazing how hard some people
push themselves. I find just hitting my 10,000 steps a day
challenging! Maybe I’ll take up shot put. Those ladies look
like they enjoy a few drinks on a Friday night. How hard can
it be?
••• We're all about festivals this month and there's a
local one to enjoy - Chiddfest, the biennial family-friendly,
music festival is back for its third year on Saturday, 18th
May. The fun takes place on Coxcombe recreation field in
Chiddingfold from 12.30pm to 8pm. This ticketed family
event will host live staged music from local performers,
with music spanning a range of genres. Also on offer will be
a variety of fantastic food and refreshments and numerous
activities for children of all ages. Organised by the PTA of
St Mary’s School, money raised will go to the school as well
as other youth groups and charities in the village. Everyone

••• Ewhurst Horticultural Society, will be holding its
Plant Sale in Ewhurst village hall, on Saturday, 11th May
from 10am-noon. Visitors will find a wide selection of
bedding plants, shrubs, veg plants and hardy perennials.
They would appreciate any surplus plants you may have for
their members table.
••• Anyone planning their summer garden will enjoy
Elstead Garden Club’s plant sale on Saturday, 18th May, at
the URC Hall, Elstead from 10am-noon. Visitors will find a
wide variety of locally grown plants including herbaceous
perennials, bedding plants, tomato plants and other
vegetables. Entry is free. All visitors very welcome.
••• Guildford and Godalming Croquet club invites you
to celebrate National Croquet Day with them on Sunday,
12th May. The club will open its doors between 2 and 5pm,
for anyone who wishes to give the sport a go. Everyone is
welcome including children over 10, if accompanied by a

••• Should an individual have the right to end his or her
own life? The Ewhurst Players will address this argument
in their play Whose Life is it Anyway on Wednesday, 29th
May to Saturday 1st June, at Ewhurst village hall. Written
by Brian Clark back in the late 1970s, its theme is just as
relevant today. Set in a hospital room, the action revolves
around Ken Harrison, a sculptor by profession who is
paralyzed from the neck down in a car accident and is
determined to be allowed to die. The playwright presents
arguments both in favour of and opposing euthanasia.
This production is presented in the form of a Theatre
Supper with a cold platter served prior to the performance.

••• Budding jockeys can take part in a charity race night
at the Wilfrid Noyce Centre in Godalming on Saturday, 4th
May. Organised by the Rotary Club of Guildford Chantries,
it promises to be a great evening. Weighing in starts at
7pm with the first race at 7.30pm, first past the post wins
a prize as will the winning owner. Six races in total with
opportunities to sponsor a race or to name your own horse.

crime” paperbacks, tries to get an
interview with serial killer Easterman,
but he has no idea what he’s getting
himself into.
First he has the little matter of trying
to get past Dr Farquhar, the head of
Fairfields asylum, where Easterman is
kept but Styler soon comes to realise
nothing is what it seems – among the
questions he needs to answer are:
who is the mysterious Borson? Where

Hello! How do you feel about
turning 50 this year? “I can’t wait! To
reach 50 is exciting, a real celebration.
I’m embracing getting older – some
people sadly don’t even make it to 50
so I can only be thankful I’m still here, loving life.”
Q. Are you sick of being asked about your
ptosis, which is why you cover your eye? “Not
really. After 25 years I still get asked about it
so I have to accept I always will. I don’t mind
explaining why I cover my eye, it’s personal choice
and how I feel comfortable. Each to their own I say!”
Q. Are you super-healthy and how do you
relax? “I’m so not healthy, which isn’t good. I love
Haribo and all things sweet. When I’m relaxing I
love a good box set on Netflix or a sci-fi novel.”
Q. What’s the greatest lesson motherhood has
taught you? “That you don’t stop being a taxi.”
Q. How do you feel about the critical acclaim
Under My Skin has earned? “The way my new
album’s been received has been phenomenal. When
you write songs and haven’t released new music in
a while you don’t know if you still can. I made an
album I love and am proud of so people telling me
they love it too is an amazing feeling. I can’t wait to
perform songs old and new at Nocturne Live.”
Q. What advice would you give to any budding
musicians? “Stay true to yourself, do what makes
you happy and follow your instincts.”
Q. Are there any rising stars you think deserve
to be huge? “I think Lady Leshur is amazing and
I’m sure will be a huge star very soon.”
Q. What format do you most like to listen
to music on? “I still buy CDs, mainly in the
supermarket. I like physical copies, I never stream
anything, I’m old-fashioned like that. My daughter
has a record player and I actually loved listening
to my new album on it as it came out in vinyl. It’s
lovely to hold and play, I should get more really.”
Q. What’s your favourite live show so far? “It
has to be performing for Nelson Mandela at the
Brighton Centre in 2000. He told me afterwards
he wanted to get up and dance. I’ll never forget
that and will harp on about it forever!”
Q. What’s on your horizon? “I’d love to go to
Nashville to write songs, I’ve done elements of
country before in my music but to actually go
there and be in the history of the place would be
amazing, one of my ambitions for sure.”
Q. Who is your dream party guest? “George
Michael, I loved him growing up as an artist and
think he was amazing. He sent me flowers and
champagne when Rise went to number 1 and I
never got to say thank you. I’d like to hang out.”
Q. What would you wish for if you had the power?
“I know it’s obvious but how can I not say peace?”

Foster carers are part of what’s called “the team around the child”. As we approach
Foster Care Fortnight, between 13th and 26th May, we encourage you to consider it.

E
very year thousands of new foster
carers are needed to help young
people to flourish in life. Could you be
one of them?
More than 65,000 children currently live with
almost 55,000 foster families across the UK. This
equates to nearly 80% of the 83,000 children in
care away from home on any one day in the UK.
The Fostering Network estimates that fostering
services need to recruit a further 6,800 foster
families in the next 12 months. Foster Care
Fortnight is the charity’s annual campaign
to raise the profile of fostering and help recruit
families to consider fostering.
Hannah and Kojo Ntow have been foster carers
since 2008, and last year they won a Fostering
Excellence Award from The Fostering Network.
Initially, they started out as respite carers before
eventually progressing into full-time carers.
For the last three years, they have been caring
for a four-year-old boy who has a very rare lifelimiting
condition. Meeting all of his daily needs
can be challenging – it can take over an hour to
feed him a meal – meaning Hannah’s background
as a nurse (Kojo is a London bus driver) is
particularly useful. Thanks to Hannah and Kojo’s
input, the little boy’s health has become stable
and he is now at nursery. Buying his first school
uniform was an exciting milestone for Hannah.
As the little boy has grown he can no longer be
carried safely upstairs, so Hannah now spends
her nights with him in a bedroom on the ground
floor. The Ntows are now planning on moving to a
home that provides space for the boy’s necessary
equipment, hoists and wheelchairs.
Hannah and Kojo’s supervising social worker,
Susan Harrisi, who nominated them for the award,

The blooming marvellous Chelsea Flower Show is a true horticultural highlight
T
here’s nothing more British than
Chelsea Flower Show, with cuttingedge

all over the world, the show offers a
glamorous, unique and memorable experience.

off, this event from 21st to 25th May, has so many

The Chelsea Flower Show is also heralding the
health and wellbeing benefits of green spaces and
gardening for both people and the environment.
The centrepiece of the show is the Great Pavilion
which houses more than 80 exhibitors. A first for
this year is a fully-interactive and walk-through
garden, created by Tom Dixon and sponsored
by IKEA, showcasing sustainable, affordable and
forward-thinking solutions to growing food at
home and in the community.

Godalming Tales 2 and how the collection has come to fruition.

n July 2015 a small group of authors
and would-be authors met for the
first time in The King’s Arms Hotel in
Godalming.
We had a mix of writing experience: a couple had
self-published books while others had long-forgotten
first drafts in bottom drawers somewhere.
We were brought together by a shared love of
writing and the knowledge that it can be a very
lonely business. We discussed the pain of staring
at a blank page (or screen) for hours in the hope
of inspiration. And the numerous cups of tea or
coffee when it failed to arrive.
After numerous meetings, the idea arose of
actually writing a book together. But what sort of
book? We all had very different literary interests
from historical to humorous to fantasy to steam
punk and beyond. And then inspiration struck:
why not a book of short stories all linked, in one
way or another, to our home town of Godalming?
We would call it: Godalming Tales (as that title
didn’t appear to have been taken).
It took a year or so to produce some 20 stories.
There was quite a mix of tales: electric
street-lighting (which Godalming pioneered),
the Tsar of Russia’s visit and, of course, the teddy
bears that live on the Llamas lands. Then we had
to turn it into an actual e-book and paperback.
And, hopefully, sell a few copies. Fortunately,
we managed to persuade a couple of local shops
to stock it and even did an evening of dramatic
readings for a local Rotary Club where we sold a
few copies.
Inevitably, we decided on a follow-up, imaginatively
entitled Godalming Tales 2. We moved
to the Jack Phillips pub and our numbers slowly
increased. After a year or so, we had 14 authors
and had written around 30 stories – even more
varied than before. Jack Phillips of Titanic fame
features as a person as well as a pub. There’s
the odd murder or two, that Rabbit Woman and
several teddy bears of course. It’s available as an
e-book and a paperback in a rather dramatic blue.

Q.
When did you discover your talent
for singing? “At a very early age as a
boy chorister. I was taught by Father
Demot MacHale, an Irish Catholic
priest who, years later was also the celebrant at
my wedding.”
Q. Who were your musical inspirations?
“Bob Dylan, Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Van
Morrison and lots of early Delta blues singers.”
Q. Do you remember the first concert you went
to? “I think it was Chris Barber’s Jazz Band. I was
really young, but my older sister smuggled me
into the back of the hall. The highlight was that
Lonnie Donnegan was in the band – he was the
father of skiffle and sang wonderful old Leadbelly
songs, like Midnight Special, during the concert.”
Q. Congratulations on your new album Selfie.
What is your process when it comes to writing
songs? “It comes from many different methods
but mostly I get the ideas in my head and take it
from there. Creating the tracks is a slow, gradual
process, and since I am doing it all myself now,
it requires loads of imagination and plenty of
ingenuity. For me the creative process is linked to
both the writing and recording.”
Q. What can audiences look forward to in
these concerts? Well-known favourites as
well as songs from the new album? Who is
accompanying you? “We will play a couple of
new songs from the album, but mostly it’s the
hits and the most popular tracks from the albums.
That’s what the audience have come to see. I’ve
had the same band for a little while now. Elliot
Henshaw plays drums, Dave Day is the guitarist,
Stephen Williams is on keyboards, and Richard
Hammond plays bass.”
Q. Do you have vocal training to keep your
voice in trim on tour? “No, and I never warm up
either – I just save it all for the stage.”
Q. Is Guildford a place that brings back good
memories? “I played the final gig of the old Civic
before they closed it. That was fun because it was
an all-star band with Eric Clapton on guitar.”
Q. Is there a location or venue that is still on
your wish list to perform at? “Wembley Stadium
or Glastonbury would be nice!”
Q. Many people fondly remember your duet
with Miss Piggy. Is there anyone else living,
dead or fictional with whom you’d love to have
a duet with? “Aretha Franklin. I met her once, but
we never sang together... She did tell me that she
liked my voice, though.”
Q. You have always been good at drawing; do
you use art as a way to relax? “It’s more for
work – designing record covers and stuff like that.
I do find making music is more relaxing.”

James Wilson is the director of Brackendale
Tree Care Ltd, we caught up with him for a

Q:
Tell us a bit about Brackendale Tree Care –
when did you start and what are the main
services?
A: I started it in 1998. We offer a tree surgery
and hedge maintenance service ranging from pruning an
apple tree to removing a large number of dangerous trees
for commercial clients.
Q: Why did you choose tree surgery as a profession?
A: I was talking to my mum about a career when nearing
the end of school. I enjoyed playing the drums but knew a
career in music might be unreliable. My mum showed me
a horticulture course she thought I’d like and the rest is
history…
Q: What do you love most about being a tree surgeon?
A: Working for myself, working in nature and meeting
different people.
Q: What’s your favourite tree and why?
A: The Gingko because of its uniquely shaped leaves.
Q: What advice would you give aspiring tree surgeons?
A: Get a trainee or apprenticeship position with a good
company. Get as many qualifications as possible to ensure
quality of work and safety. I recommend the courses at
Merrist Wood College (in Guildford), where many of the
team trained.
Q: What’s your favourite job as a tree surgeon?
A: Felling a diseased tree in
an open space, this is quite
rare as most trees we work
on have to be pieced down
due to buildings and other
obstructions.

Godalming’s Mark Lee Davies has organised a special event to raise money for the
Born Free Foundation which celebrates its 35th anniversary this month

Airways... Flight MLD2019 will depart
to planet MLD – a living diary of Mark
Lee Davies’ inspirations this year.
On Saturday, 8th June, at the Wilfrid Noyce
Centre, MLD will offer an in-flight entertainment
bonanza of dance, yoga, theatre and fashion,
topped off with music and thought-provoking
context. Light refreshments and mocktails will be
served by Mint Cakery UK during the “flight” along
with a charity raffle so be sure to take plenty of
cash for your on-board purchases!
“I started raising money for the Born Free
Foundation at the start of 2017 after watching a
documentary about the charity,” explains Mark.
“Throughout 2017/18 I taught many yoga and
dance workshops, cake sales, yoga in the park
and raffles to help raise money for this incredible
charity. All my events so far have been in
Godalming and now we have formed a little MLD
Born free community which attend my events
regularly which is amazing.”
After becoming star fundraiser for Born Free last
year, Mark wanted to do something different
which has led to this show. “I thought this year
I wanted to create a show from everything I
do and theme it around Born Free and all the
ticket proceeds can go to the charity,” adds
Mark. “I feel very passionate about helping
people reconnect to wildlife and nature as I feel
there is huge disconnect. Born Free’s slogan is
#KeepWildlifeInTheWild. So with all this in
mind came the concept of my show. It’s a flight
to Planet MLD but along the way we will bump
into Mother Nature and five gods, with each god
representing the different habitats on earth. We
will look at some of the issues Born Free tackles
such as trophy hunting, the exotic pet trade and
animals in entertainment.”
The show, which starts at 7pm, is a mix of
commercial and contemporary dance and yoga
accompanied by voice overs, with music from
Ariana Grande, Tears For Fears, Black Eyed Peas,
Lady GAGA, Madonna and many more.

etworth Park Antiques & Fine Art Fair
is an annual highlight. Organised by
The Antiques Dealers Fair Limited,
some 50 expert dealers from around
the UK will bring their finest wares for collectors,
interior designers and discerning members of the
public to the grounds of Petworth House.
Visitors can browse and buy the finest period
furniture, jewellery, paintings, silver, sculpture,
lighting, vintage watches, clocks, ceramics,
glass, including art pieces, and other works of
art from the ancient to the contemporary. The
majority of the exhibitors are members of the
UK’s two leading associations for professional
art and antiques dealers; BADA and LAPADA The
Association of Art & Antiques Dealers.
Art for sale includes a signed Marilyn announcement
card by Andy Warhol published by New York’s
Castelli Gallery, 1981 and selling for about
£15,000 from Haynes Fine Art – London &
Cotswolds. By contrast, Ottocento has Still
Life with Lobster and Lemon, an oil on canvas
attributed to Flemish artist Joris Van Son
(1623-1667), £31,000. A selection of Victorian
landscapes, marine and figurative paintings for
sale from Cambridge Fine Art include Britannia
racing Lulworth, a busy day in the Solent by John J
Holmes (b.1938), signed, oil on canvas, £3,300.
Locals might be particularly interested to see the
paintings on show with John Robertson. He is
devoting his stand to the work of former Petworth
resident John Heseltine (1923-2016), his American
born wife Pam Masco (1953-2018) and their
friend Fred Laurent, who were all painters and
commercial illustrators employed by publications
to bring their stories to life. Many of the early
works were never returned to the artists, but
were destroyed. John Robertson has the only
known large collection for sale, which he acquired
directly from the artists. In 1969, Heseltine was
commissioned by IPC (International Publishing
Corporation) to illustrate the investiture of HRH
The Prince of Wales and painted portraits of HM
Queen Elizabeth II and HRH The Duke of York.
Contemporary art on Moncrieff-Bray Gallery’s
stand includes sculptures and paintings by
emerging and established artists. Sarah Warley
Cummings’ oil paintings depict scenes around the
South Downs and Arun Valley.

lace all the dry ingredients (except
the seeds) into a large mixing bowl
and stir to ensure they’re well
blended together.
Heat coconut butter, sugar, golden syrup, lemon
juice and zest in a saucepan, bring to a gentle boil
stirring to ensure all combined well and the sugar
has dissolved. Carefully pour the syrup on to the dry
ingredients and stir well, making sure all the dry ingredients
are well coated with the syrup mix.
Cooking:
30 minutes
Makes:
One tray bake
Transfer the mix to a shallow baking
tray lined with baking parchment
and spread the mix out evenly. Top
the mix with an even sprinkle of the
pumpkin, sunflower and flax seeds.
Place the tray bake in a pre-heated
oven at 160C degrees and bake for
30 minutes until golden brown.
Leave to cool completely before
cutting and serving.
