A CATHOLIC Advertisement EDUCATION IS WITHIN REACH Together in Mission makes a Catholic education possible for a local family The Catholic faith is an integral part of the Jimenez household. Jesus is a cantor and lector at the local parish where his kids also distribute the bulletin after Mass each Sunday—but for many years, both parents thought that sending their children to a private Catholic school was out of the question for financial reasons. “We have been involved in the church for years,” Griselda Jimenez, mother of two, said speaking through a translator. “But we never thought that my husband and I could afford to send our children to a Catholic school because we always thought it was only for the rich.” However, the school principal, Maria Palermo, assured her that Together in Mission helps supplement the tuition costs for families who struggle financially. “Together in Mission has allowed these kids to attend All Saints who otherwise couldn’t,” Palermo said. She adds that the annual appeal also helps keep the school operations going. Griselda said she wanted to send her daughter, Italia, now 8-years-old, to All Saints because of the respect the teachers and staff showed her family. “A lot of attention was given to our family,” she said. Griselda adds that she believes her daughter, who began at All Saints in kindergarten, is more academically advanced than she would be at the local public school. To show their gratitude and to defray the cost of tuition, both Griselda and Jesus assist in keeping the school clean. The school’s skeleton budget means parents volunteer to clean the school in order to forego the expense of a custodian. Griselda is there every day to clean the classrooms. Griselda’s loyalty to the school is evident, but it’s her dedication to her children that drives her. “Parents have to get involved to make things possible for their kids,” she said— and she wants other parents to join her. “I’m a great recruiter. I’m always telling my neighbors and friends about the school.” The theme of this year’s Together in Mission campaign is “Our Story Is Hope.” Dee Smith, Director of Annual Appeals, shares that this theme is universal in its reach and resonates with every individual regardless of one’s background or status. In 20<strong>19</strong>, over sixty-three parishes and sixty-five schools will benefit from the Together in Mission funds which help financially struggling parishes and schools with critical operating shortfalls. Each year, 75,000 parishioners make a commitment, thus keeping schools and parishes strong foundations of faith and learning. “ Together in Mission has allowed these kids to attend All Saints who otherwise couldn’t. ” Together in Mission is the annual appeal of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles.
