Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary
16

The sanctuary at Sepilok was opened in
1964, to rehabilitate orangutans rescued
from logging sites, plantations, illegal
hunting or from having been kept as
pets.
The orphaned orangutans are trained
to survive again in the wild and are
released as soon as they are ready. The
forest reserve is about 10,000 acres
mostly virgin forest where around 60
to 80 orangutans roam freely.
The Borneo pygmy elephant lives in north
eastern Borneo. Officially an endangered
species, the population has declined by 50%
over the last 60 years, threatened by human
population growth and the resulting loss
of habitat. It is very rare to see these animals.
