Oshawa, ON: How much of a race car is the driver and how much the
macine? Larry Kerrigan and his ‘33 recently ran a 10.16 ET at 129.3 MPH.
Whlle Kerrigan is the owner, driver and money man, the car is not without
a voice.
Canadian Rick Staples built the car for speed and safety. Sitting on
a square tube race chassis with a 10 pt cage is a 3” chopped Scott Rods
race body.
A 383 c.i. Chevy with AFR 210 heads, a comp soilid roller, .639 lift
cam, Eagle rods, Wirsco pistons, Scat crankshaft, on the inside, is topped
with a Weiand Hi-Ram tunnel ram with dual 660 squiirters.
Power is transferred to the Hoosier rubber mounted on Rodlite
wheels through a Turbo 400 with a Neil Chance 4500 stall converter to a
“ETs are forgotten, wheelstands are forever.”
Colfax, IN: I bought my ‘55 a month after I graduated high school. It sat in pieces
until 2000 when I decided to go racing. Bracket racing was fun but I wanted more.
I rebuilt the engine and was shocked when the car started wheelstanding. I have
to admit that it was a rush seeing the fans’ reactions. Their appreciation got me into
trying to lift the front wheels further and carry them farther each time.
I’m honored to be chosen for the cover of GASSER Magazine and proud to be
a member of the cub. I look forward to seeing you at races in 2019. Don’t be surprised
if you hear me say, “ETs are forgotten, wheelstands are forever.”
It's 1964; a twelve-year-old boy leans in to look over the fender of a dual-quad SS Impala from his Stingray bike. Moments
earlier the big Impala could be seen beating the brakes off of a legit 12.90 drag car on the straightaway in front of his home.
The boy, Jerry Lopez, and the impact of that day would define a lifetime of Muscle cars, Street Rods, Show cars and Drag racing.
Forty-two years later, in 2012, Jerry would embark on his latest creation, "THE RIVER RAT," with the hopes of acquiring
his first nine second ET. slip. The rising costs of classic junkers meant that Jerry would start this build with an affordable fourdoor
sedan. Within the confines of his little, back yard, shop of horrors, the '55 Sedan would get re-fitted with a set of used two
door sedan doors, a one-piece flip front end and a new Speedway straight axle. Wheel well radiation, yellow paint, and a set
of old school slots would finish the visuals.
Pat Musi supplied the Big M Dart block fitted with a set of 13:1 pistons. An 1150 Dominator provides fuel via Victor 565
intake and Brodix 360 heads, which have since been worked over by Mike Stark of CFM Performance. Dale Hagadone of
WHIPLASH Racing Transmissions would supply gear changes by way of a trans-braked turbo 400. A 1957 Pontiac third
member sporting a 4.56:1 gear is used out back and the power is transferred to the pavement with 33x11.5 Mickey Thompson
slicks.
Upon the River Rat's completion, in 2016, the man and his machine would make their debut at the DANCHUCK TRI-FIVE
NATS. Violent starting line launches and huge wheel-stands, that weekend, would solidify The RIVER RAT'S existence as a
crowd pleaser and photographers dream in the world of modern day gassers. Jerry would come to realize one of his dreams
on the last pass of the last evening of that event. Opting to foot brake from an Idle, in hopes of reining in some of the violence,
the back yard hot rodder and his big yellow rat blasted off, and made their way, into the nine-second club.
It’s 2018 and Jerry and the River Rat have traveled the country and raced at today’s premier Gasser events such as The
Meltdown Drags, Hot Rod Revivals, Gasser Blow-Outs and Funny Car Chaos Gasser invitationals. While fulfilling his life long
dreams Jerry says, "My favorite part of my travels are the friends I make and meet along the way." As for The River Rat, it
doesn't speak, it just hangs out on the door, salivating, and waiting for Jerry to saddle up, hit the starter button, and drop the
hammer for the fans.
I’ve always loved the Willy’s coupes
and hoped that one day I would build one.
Back in the day I wanted to build a pro-street
but as the years passed I decided a gasser was
more my speed. I’d been looking for several
years when I finally came across a 1940 Willys
on eBay. It was a basket case but just what I
wanted. A few people bid on the car but it
never reached its minimum. I kept the seller
contact info and waited for a few months to
contact her.
THE BUY:
I live in Colorado, the car was in Chicago and
the owner lived in Florida. A family funeral
was going to take me to Ohio so I emailed the
seller to see if I could see the coupe on my
way back through the Midwest. I flew into
Chicago and took a cab to meet the brother of
her late husband. When the storage garage
was opened up, I could see that the car
needed a ground-up restoration. It looked like
all the pieces were there. One phone call to
Florida was all it took for me to be the proud
owner of my Willys. It arrived in Colorado
on a flat bed trailer, uncovered and full of
snow.
THE BUILD:
The next three years would prove to be challenging.
The coupe needed a complete frameoff
and rotisserie restoration. The frame was
blasted and then powder coated in a semigloss
black paint for a 60’s appearance. All the
rear end components were stripped painted
and/or chrome plated. The rear end was not
centered in the wheel wells. The front springmounted
axle also needed relocating and
extra gussets added for rigidity.

p h o t o s b y t r e n t s h e r r i l l
THE DRIVETRAIN:
The engine had to be a Chrysler hemi. What else would a Sixties-era Gasserguy want in his Willys?
Mine is an aftermarket block, bored and stroked to 528 c.i. with H-beam rods, JE pistons and a forged
steel crank. The valve train system is spec’d by Ray Barton and includes a roller cam, rockers and triple
springs. It’s got Indy CNC ported race heads and port-matched intakes with a 14-71 billet blower that
has been Teflon lined by the Blower Shop. At the moment it has twin Holley 950s that have been flowed.
My plan is to go to EFI but I need to find an older looking 4-hole system that will accommodate my engine’s
CFM.
The transmission is a 727 Torquflite that has been reworked with all-billet and M300 input and output
shafts. To attempt some ability to drive on the street, the car has a 4200 Stall, 9” ATI converter. Frank’s
in Florida made the ASI 4340 steel alloy driveshaft, U-joints and yoke system. The 9” Ford rear end has
35-spline Mark Williams’ axles with a billet center housing.

p h o t o s b y t r e n t s h e r r i l l
THE BODY:
I wanted suicide doors so the entire doorframe needed to be cut out, redesigned and reinforced. That
meant I needed to have the locks relocated. It took months to make the tilt front end work, get the rear
fender wells radiused and the body straightened and smooth. Inside, I wanted a cleaner looking dash
so we fabricated a new one. I wanted to be able to race in Nostalgia classes so an eight-point cage was
installed and five-point harnesses attached.
The car’s late owner had wanted to paint the car Candy Apple Red like ‘Big John’ Mazmanian’s
Willys. I went with a color ‘Big John’ might not have liked but one he would have recognized when it
was in the opposite lane: Stone, Woods & Cook blue.
THE INTERIOR:
Take a look at the blue Stone, Woods & Cook Willys. It was a race car but the interior could have been
out of a street rod. Their interior was white and blue but I wanted mine to be all-white. I went with a
classic, no frills, clean 2” tuck & roll look. Staying true to the era, I chose a black carpet. I did get creative
and built my own console and shifter housing. In the trunk I put the fuel cell between the rear frame
rails so I would have room for chairs, coolers, etc. when I went to car shows. The trunk’s upholstery
matches the interior.

THE WHEELS & TIRES:
Here we go again. Take a look at some of the early photos of the
blue Stone, Woods & Cook coupe. White walls. Not everyone’s favorite
but if they were good enough for the SWC gang, they were
good enough for me. Completing the look, I went with ET wheels
and Radir ‘pie crust’ dragster slicks. Guys often ask me, “Do they
stick?” My response is always the same, “Hell no! Not in a million
years, but they sure look cool.” To be fair, the M/T wrinkle walls I
run at the dragstrip don’t stick much better.
Years passed and my thoughts turned to the widow who had
sold me the Willys. I wasn’t sure if she would even remember me
but I tracked her down and reconnected with her. I sent her a video
of the car and snapshots as well. She was thrilled and said her husband
would have loved the car. I asked her what she thought of
the interior. I didn’t get the polite old lady response I was expecting.
She said, “My husband wanted all black but I think the white
is bitchin’!” That made both of us laugh. Being able to finish her
husband’s dream project and share it with her was a special moment.
Gasser Appreciation Race
B L U E S U E D E C R U I S E
Chuck & Marcella Lipka’s ‘41 Willys is powered by a blown Olds ~ Eureka, MO
NORWALK, OH: The GASSER Appreciation race is our longest running
event and for darn good reason! Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk
Ohio is the best track in the country! My kids want to go there; my wife
has even been there! I know I have said this in the past, but this event
at this venue is such a laid back relaxing weekend. It has the best of
both worlds; Nostalgia drag racing and a huge car show. The car show
brings in 3,000+ street rods and hot rods as well as a bunch of street
Gassers. The track is open to all of them for Fun Runs on Friday and
Saturday. There is also a large manufacturers midway. Speaking of the
midway, this year ScottRods donated a rolling 1934 Ford roadster to be
given to a lucky attendee!
The racers side of the track was packed with three main divisions,
Hot Rod, the NDRL and GASSERS; a total of about 500 racers. The
Gassers were divided into two groups: Competition Gas and Nostalgia
Gas. Competition Gas participants got four time trials and ran a handicap
program on Sunday dialing in to the nearest 10th. Nostalgia Gas participants
got three time trials, and then on Saturday evening they ran a
heads up index show for the fans. Each index winner received a trophy.
On Sunday they also dialed in to the nearest 10th.
The winner of Comp Gas raced the winner of Nostalgia Gas for the
Championship. This year we had five rounds of competitors on Sunday
in each Gasser division. The final round in Competition Gas had Jay
Rust in his ‘Bad to the Bone’ ‘55 Chevy from Chesterland,Ohio losing to
Larry Shawberry from Tifin, Ohio in his wild ‘63 Belvedere.
Nostalgia Gas came down to Craig Murry, the crazy Canadian, in
his ‘55 Chevy losing to Steve Tanzella from Beverly Massachusetts in
his clean ‘56 Chevy. The final saw Steve take the win with the Mopar of
Larry Shawberry had transmission issues. Congratuations to Steve for
figuring out the lights after his first run and then taking it to the rest of
the pack!
The Saturday night heads up racing saw some great starting line
antics and with these cars coming out on top:
E/G Freddy Wilkerson, Kenton, OH ‘63 Corvette
F/G Dale Healy, Marengo, OH ‘65 Chevy II
The largest class was D/G with four rounds of competitors. If you’ll
notice, Willys took the first four classes. Pretty cool for the Mid America
Willys Club!
Thanks to all who participated in this year’s Blue Suede Cruise.
With the growing interest in Nostalgia Gassers, we expect an even bigger
group of racers next year. See you there!
C A P T A I N A M E R I C A ! by SLICK ROGERS
NINETEEN STORIES UNDER THE MISSISSIPI
in a secret government laboratory, geneticist Dr. Daniel James
Lopez Sr. headed up a collaboration of world-renowned physicists
to apply the theories of the space and time continuum to his secret
project, CAPTAIN AMERICA.
OK, I’m lying. Southern Louisiana’s Danny Lopez isn’t a scientist
in a secret underground laboratory, but CAPTAIN AMERICA
is his American dream. Danny is a hard-working air boat pilot. His
devoted racing crew includes wife Rachel, daughter Allison, and
sons Daniel Jr. and Cody. Danny’s ‘collaborators’ are fellow drag
racers who apply both science and physics to their chosen sport.
Lopez says the Captain’s look was inspired by the red, white,
and blue paint scheme of Tommy Killingsworth’s ‘MISSFIT’, along
with the design of Nick Shervino’s, ‘IRON MAN’. With the swab of
a Q-tip, he captured enough Gasser chromosomes to turn his mildmannered
Oldsmobile into the patriotic superhero you see here. A
dropping from the Lopez’s, ‘RIVER RAT’ resulted in enough DNA
to reproduce radiused wheel wells and a Gasser stance. OK,
maybe I’m lying about the rat droppings, but you get the idea.
The ’56 Olds Rocket 88 two-door sedan utilizes a stock chassis
that has had the X removed and rails boxed. Upfront he added
a rectangular tube front section connected to a 1956 GMC axle and
stock steering. The body is all steel except for the handmade fiberglass
trunk. It tips the scales at a fighting weight of 2900 lbs.
Power comes by way of a punched out 455 Oldsmobile big
block, with just a tad over 12:1 compression and a non-roller hydraulic
Mondello stick sporting .576 lift and 308 degrees duration.
Box stock Edelbrock heads, and an Edelbrock Victor intake do the
heavy breathing, while a 1050 Quick Fuel supplies the propellant.
Cragar wheels on all four corners are mounted to a set of 28 x 4
front runners, and 33 x 12 slicks that take their orders from a 4.56:1
rear gear. The Turbo 400 is equipped with a 5200-rpm stall and
was built with an Anti-Gravity button by WHIPLASH transmissions.
CAPTAIN AMERICA reached its goal of a sub seven second
pass on it’s second journey to an 1/8th mile track. A nice, wheels
up, launch against an arch rival yielded a 6.84 ET at 97 MPH win
light. Plans for the further development of the Captain include
going all Oldsmobile by swapping out the nine-inch Ford third member
for a 1957 9.3 Olds rear end.
CAPTAIN AMERICA!
A super guy’s super car. God Bless America!
Slick Rogers
455 Oldsmobile big block, 12:1 compression, hydraulic Mondello
cam , box stock Edelbrock heads, and an Edelbrock Victor intake.
Captain America’s super crew includes wife Rachel, daughter
Allison and not seen in this photo, sons Danny Jr. and Cody.

H O W T O G ET Y O U R C A R I N G A S S E R M A G A Z I N E
ERNESTLY SPEAKING: Want to get
your car in the magazine? What works
for me is you telling your story in your
own words. Yeah, your photos are worth
a thousand words, but they don’t tell your
story. We didn’t get to where we are with
cars without having our own ‘car history’.
For some it involves a high school hot
rod. For others there maybe the sweet
smell of burning rubber at the local drag
strip. Your story is your story. So tell
YOUR story.
Tech Stuff: You can fill out a tech
sheet on your car if you want, or just write
down what’s important to you.
Photos: Pay attention to the background.
Your eyes maybe focused on
your car, but the camera sees it all, including
that ugly whatever behind your
car. OK, other hints include: Leave plenty
of space around your car. Don’t crop incamera.
I’ll take care of that in Photoshop.
Camera Angles: Front, Side, ¾
from Front, Engine, Interior, etc. Closeups
on cool custom details can add to the
article. If you can take an aerial shot, go
for it. Same if you want to get down low
and even use a wide angle lens if you
have one. If you have flash on your camera,
use it to fill in shadows in daytime
shots.
Digital: Shoot at as high a resolution
as possible. What works for the web
doesn’t work for a printed magazine. If
you’re email the photos, send them one
at a time if necessary, but as large a file
as you can. It makes a big difference. If
you can put your photos and a Word docstory
on a disk, go for it.
Xerox copies of photos will NOT
work. Same with those of articles printed
in newspapers or magazines.
That’s pretty much it. Take the photos,
write a page or so on your car and
you. When we have space, we’ll run all
appropriate articles. ERNEST
GASSER LEGEND ‘OHIO GEORGE’ MONTGOMERY
Dayton, OH: As a young man, George Montgomery lived for cars. He
came of age in the classic era of the hot rod and fully immersed himself
in the car culture. George Took car building seriously and went on to become
one of the pioneers of the sport of drag racing.
From a little shop in a suburb of Dayton, Ohio, he built and raced
cars that led the world in innovation and craftsmanship. George was a
leading participant in the famous “Gasser Wars” match races of the 1960’s
where he earned the moniker “Ohio George,” while driving his iconic 1933
Willys to victory after victory. The Gasser Era was one of the most colorful
chapters in racing history and George was one of the most successful
racers of the time.
Always in innovator, Montgomery built the groundbreaking Malco
Gasser Mustang in 1967 and followed it with the revolutionary Mr Gasket
turbocharged Mustang a few years later. After retiring from racing in 1985,
George became one of the most successful engine builders in the country.
He is the recipient of the National Hot Rod Association’s most prestigious
awards, including the Lifetime Achievement Award, and is listed
as one of drag racing’s top 50 all time drivers.
