Former US Ambassador and HebrewU
Alum Visits Students to Launch New
Student Blogs Show You the Real
HebrewU
Scholarship
Former Ambassador of the United States
of America to the State of Israel Dan
Shapiro, along with his wife, Founder of
the Consortium for Israel and the Asylum
Seekers, Julie Fisher, addressed the
Undergraduate Division Spring Semester
cohort in our semester opening event on
February 25. The event also marked the
launch of our new Legacy Scholarship,
intended for second and third generation
decedents of HebrewU’s RIS alumni.
our international students! See their
personalities and experiences shine
peace to the undergraduate dance
student’s adventures in Jerusalem.
Read some student blogs
As alumni of the class of 1990, they spoke
about their experience here and how it
transformed their lives and career paths. "I
found my own love of studying the Middle
East – the history and politics, Judaism
and Islam, Hebrew and Arabic, really
came to life and the foundations of what I
did professionally after were laid here in
Jerusalem....I can trace it [my career path]
to the year spent here at Hebrew
University," says Dan.
Currently a distinguished visiting fellow at
the Institute for National Security Studies
in Tel Aviv, Dan also addressed the latest
developments in US–Israel relations and
the prospects for peace between the
Israelis and Palestinians.
After Dan and Julie answered student
questions, they gave a personal interview
to a Spring in Jerusalem Honors Program
student and then went to lunch with RIS
students. This experience was a great way
for students to get personal insight into
how important their own experiences and
education is for the future of our
communities at home and overseas.
New STEAM for Social Change Gap-
Year Program
High school graduates with a strong
background in STEAM subjects (science,
technology, engineering, art, and
mathematics) can now gain meaningful
professional experience under the
guidance of experts in the field – and earn
transferable academic credits from
HebrewU. We’re launching this program in
partnership with the Carmel 6000
Development Center, a technology
incubator that works with companies like
Cisco, Microsoft, and Intel. Throughout the
year, students will design leading-edge
applications and solutions in the areas
of welfare and health for underserved
populations.
This year at HebrewU gives students a
head start on their careers in the hi-tech
sector, and they’ll enter university with
advanced skills in STEAM subjects.
RIS Hosts Prestigious Talentum
Program from Mexico
Rutgers Volunteer Day at Meir Panim
This school year, Rutgers students
participating in HebrewU programs took
part in a volunteer day at Meir Panim’s
restaurant-style soup kitchen. With the
look and feel of a restaurant, Meir Panim
offers a dignified alternative to traditional
soup kitchens, providing quality meals in a
comfortable dining setting to impoverished
Israelis.
Student Hannah Kaufman, a dance
student at HebrewU and dance and
sociology major at Rutgers, recently
participated in the volunteer day. Hannah
says, “Students took some plates out to
people, while other people were in the
back preparing, making a big salad. There
were maybe 20 people there to have a
meal that day.”
When asked if she would recommend the
volunteer opportunities at HebrewU,
Hannah says, “Definitely do it. You can
only bring better things to the world.
You always go away feeling better.”
Hannah spoke about coming to Israel, the
friends and family she has here, and the
fact that “Israel is becoming one of the
best places to study dance. So many small
companies are popping up now, in addition
to the renowned ones… if you have the
opportunity to come you should take it!”
HebrewU hopes to continue this program
with Rutgers, as it can benefit our students
as well as our wider community.
For two weeks in October, HebrewU
hosted a group of students from Mexico
through Talentum, a highly selective
extracurricular educational program run by
the Centro de Investigación y Docencia
Económicas (CIDE), Mexico’s leading
university for social sciences. The
Talentum program offers 60 university
students academic, professional, and
social opportunities to build leadership
skills and broaden global understanding.
While previous Talentum cohorts have
traveled to the United States for
international experiences, this is the
program’s first year partnering with
HebrewU. “What prompted the
partnership is that the Mexican Friends
of the Hebrew University wanted to
expose the State of Israel and Hebrew
University to the future leaders of
Mexico,” explains Sheli Amir, director of
the Department of Summer Courses and
Special Programs.
The main theme of the program was Water
Technology and Management, and
students attended seminars, workshops,
and lectures with outstanding faculty from
around the country in environmental
science as well as Israel and Middle East
Studies and Innovation and
Entrepreneurship. During their busy two
weeks, the Talentum students also
explored cultural sites in Jerusalem;
visited tech companies, the Ministry of
Economy, Technion University and Tel Aviv
University; and toured local organizations
that work with water, irrigation, and
agriculture.
