MAY 2019 | THE FIGHT 5
THEEDITOR
In honor of Long Beach Pride taking
place this month on May 18-19 (go
to www.longbeachpride.com for updates)
Mayor Robert Garcia talks to
THE FIGHT about how far we’ve come
and plans for the future (“Celebrating
Our Freedom,” pages 14-15).
“I really think it’s a great time to be
part of the LGBTQ community,” says
Garcia. “To experience the victory for
marriage equality, to be elected the
first openly gay mayor of Long Beach,
to see an openly gay man running
for president, to see LGBTQ support
clubs in high schools, gay characters
in movies and TV, it’s a historic time
for freedom and it’s exciting.”
“It’s easy to forget,” states Garcia,
“that just 10 or 20 years ago, most
political leaders opposed marriage
equality, LGBTQ kids were almost
completely isolated, we didn’t have
hate crime protections—it was just
a very different situation. Before
Stonewall, gay rights were not
discussed politically and sadly that’s
still the situation in many parts of the
country and other parts of the world.
We are seeing a backlash against
trans equality that’s very concerning.
THEROSTOWREPORT
BRACE FOR A
DEVASTATING
ANSWER
There’s a decent chance that
by this time next year, our fight
for LGBT civil rights will have
been dealt a massive setback
by the Supreme Court, one
so powerful that it could take
years or maybe a generation
to recover from it. Thank you
Jim Comey, Vladimir Putin
and all the cable news shows
that furrowed their brows over
Hillary Clinton’s email server
while chuckling along with the
hijinks of Donald Trump.
Maybe your eyes glaze over
when you see headlines about
“Title VII of the Civil Rights Act
of 1964” or read about workplace
discrimination in general.
But hear this: the Supreme
Court has not simply agreed to
decide whether or not you can
be fired for being gay. It has
essentially agreed to decide
whether discrimination against
gays and transpeople is okay,
or not okay. If they decide it’s
okay, the repercussions will
extend to federal protections
in housing and education.
Even in towns or states with
specific language on the books
that cover LGBT residents, an
antigay decision by the High
Court will effectively give
religious actors the green light
to seek a “faith based” exception
to local laws.
We have been somewhat
fortunate to have enjoyed
a string of four major gay
rights victories since 1996:
Romer, Lawrence, Windsor
and Obergefell. All four of
these opinions were written
by Anthony Kennedy, a man
who agreed that gays should
not be harassed or harmed,
but could not quite reach the
conclusion that gays deserved
equal treatment. Now, in
large part thanks to Kennedy’s
hesitancy, the core question of
our right to equality will be presented
to a conservative Court
majority. Kennedy, the “champion
of gay rights,” had plenty
of chances to state plainly
that antigay discrimination
has no place in 21st Century
American society. Instead, he
left the question wide open
and now we must brace for a
devastating answer.
ROBERTS RULES
I assume you were already
aware that the High Court decided
to consolidate and accept
two gay workplace discrimination
cases; one, a Second
Circuit ruling in favor of a (now
dead) gay sky diving instructor,
and two, an Eleventh Circuit
SAN
MATEO
PRIDE
The San Mateo
County Fair
has designated
Monday, June 10
as Family
PRIDE Day.
Besides
the addition of hop-
ping kangaroos, sweet
and savory crepes, and an all-new concert
line up at the 2019 San Mateo County Fair,
there’s something else new and exciting.
For the first time ever there will be a
Family PRIDE Day.
In partnership with the San Mateo Pride
Center, the San Mateo County Fair has
designated Monday, June 10 as Family
PRIDE Day. “In conjunction with Pride
Month, we are committed to celebrating
our LGBTQIA community, allies and family
members,” said Justin Aquino, Fair
Operations Manager. “On this one day,
all children 12 and under will be admitted
free, plus there will be free parking, too.”
“It’s our first time participating in a
family pride event at a fair,” said Ivon
Hernandez, grant writer and development
associate for the San Mateo Pride Center.
“A lot of people at the center, including
me, were born in the county, and so we
are very excited about this.”
“On Family PRIDE Day, the San Mateo
Pride Center will be presenting a resource fair
with partnering organizations that are LGBTQ
centering and affirming,” shared Hernandez.
THE SAN MATEO
PRIDE CENTER WILL
BE PRESENTING
A RESOURCE FAIR
WITH PARTNERING
ORGANIZATIONS
THAT ARE LGBTQ
CENTERING AND
AFFIRMING.
Family PRIDE Day will kick-off with a ribbon
cutting ceremony outside gate 5 (enter
from Saratoga Drive), just before the noon
official opening. Ribbon cutting participants
will include Dana Stoehr, chief executive
officer of the San Mateo County Event
Center and Fair, Lisa Putkey, Program
Director at the San Mateo Pride Center, as
well as community leaders and elected officials.
Pride flags will be displayed throughout
the fairgrounds. In addition, LGBTQIA
and allied entertainers are being sought to
perform on the Community Stage, a stage
dedicated to community performances.
The special day will culminate with a
free concert at 7:30 p.m. featuring Queen
Nation, a tribute to the music of Queen.
“The lines to see the movie Bohemian
Rhapsody late last year are evidence of
the timeless love for Queen’s music,” said
Dana Stoehr, chief executive officer of the
San Mateo County Event Center and Fair.
“We are delighted that Queen Nation will
bring Queen’s iconic music to our free
concert series in June.”
While all concerts are included with admission
at the San Mateo County Fair, those who
prefer a premium, reserved seat can purchase
a Gold Circle ticket. Gold Circle tickets
are just $40 and include admission to the fair
plus reserved seating at the concert.
A journey in self-discovery:
the story of Helix Studios model Kyle Ross.
Acoming-of-age novel Twink
chronicles the tumultuous life of
Helix Studios model Kyle Ross.
Written by Taylor Saracen, readers meet
a teenage Ross: a skinny, weak, gay adolescent
living in rural America, trying
to navigate his way through the most
difficult time in his life, high school. It
is a journey in self-discovery as Kyle
struggles to find acceptance from
friends and family while also confronting
a mother battling life challenges of
her own. Being released through 13 Red
Media, Twink is available now in select
bookstores, Amazon and most e-book
retailers worldwide.
The book spotlights several traumatic
events in Kyle Ross’ young teen life including
his mother losing her high-profile
job with American Express in the 2008
banking crisis and his parents’ divorce.
The mother’s decision to uproot Kyle and
his brothers from his childhood home in
Dallas to a small town in Tennessee was
particularly distressing, says Kyle.
The Tennessee town they now called
home lacked diversity and understanding,
which was particularly difficult
for a young boy awakening to his
homosexuality.
Kyle’s advice to those in the LGBTQ
community that are currently living in
isolated towns like the one he experienced
in Tennessee: “Move to a major
city. You will find people out there who
are just like you. Come, we’re here.”
Twink is Taylor Saracen’s second novel
in 13 Red Media’s “Rise Up” series.
Saracen is a former middle and high
school teacher who holds a Bachelor’s
degree in Applied Developmental
Psychology and is particularly interested
in the plight of youth whose path
to adulthood may appear unorthodox
to most. “I seek to de-stigmatize those
who work in the adult film industry by
showing how closely their struggles
mirror our own,” she says. “They are
a community that has been marginalized
and maligned. They deserve better
representation.”
