ECa REVIEW EDITORIAL Misplaced faith in Facebook Brenda Schimke ECA Review It’s hard to understand how society in general trusts Mark Zuckerman, Facebook’s CEO, more than their democratic government. It wasn’t that many years ago when then-Prime Minister Harper started dismantling the credibility of data collected by Statistics Canada by weakening sample sizes. He argued long forms shouldn’t be mandatory because governments can’t be trusted with our personal data. “ It just seems counter intuitive to trust private for-profit over government for public good. Statistics Canada at that time had a worldwide reputation for quality data. It had a proven track record for producing objective data through excellent sampling techniques and analyses. Objective statistical information is vital to an open and democratic society. Statistics Canada provides the most accurate data available to aid elected officials in estimating expected expenditures and revenues and developing sound budgets for its citizens. Then there’s Zuckerman who uses our personal data for personal profit. Facebook’s whole profit model is to modify our behaviours so that we give away our most personal of information. His algorithms, designed by man, knowingly share personal data with third party profiteers and influence peddlers. Should we not feel violated when Cambridge Analytica and Aggregate IQ, a Canadian company, were able to mine the personal data of We like your letters. Keep writing to the Editor. Our opinion isn’t the only one…it is important that you express your opinion! “ OPINION approximately 600,000 Canadians through a third party app? Just because someone on Facebook took the bait and downloaded the app, “This is Your Digital Life”, it allowed these third party operatives to access the downloader’s personal information and that of all his Facebook friends without any of their knowledge or consent. For all those who were outraged that the government collects significant information via a mandatory census every 10 years, few even bothered to ask their Facebook friends whether they had downloaded this third party app. It just seems counter intuitive to trust private for-profit over government for public good. A recent report by the federal and BC privacy commissioners found that through AggregateIQ and Cambridge Analytica, Facebook had engaged in serious privacy violations including not receiving consent from Canadians to use their personal data. In Canada we have the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA). The law states that any commercial operation (e.g. Facebook) must obtain consent for the collection, use and disclosure of personal information. Facebook’s response to these findings was essentially, “we don’t agree” or “stop us if you can”. They know it will take a protracted court case to find them guilty and since they have more money and influence than our government, they can litigate forever. Like drug and tobacco companies, they, too, have a multi-billion dollar contingency fund set aside to pay fines—an acceptable cost of doing business when industry effectively controls much of the public and the politicians. When we, as a collective society, are no longer able to discern between those who we vote to help us (e.g. governments) versus those who are out to profit from us (e.g. Facebook), it is no wonder that democracies are in decline worldwide and democratic institutions are under attack on every front. VIEWPOINTS Keep it short…Ask yourself how long you would spend reading an individual letter. Don’t rant… Nothing turns away a reader’s interest like a misguided, misdirected rant. Don’t put down or name call other writers. We all have a right to our opinions. Instead, aim for a persuasive, rational argument supported by facts and figures. On being edited … Expect editing…and when it doesn’t happen, great. All newspapers reserve the right to edit. The primary purpose is to ensure a letter is readable While care is taken in the editing process not to impair (or destroy) a writer’s point of view, a well-formulated letter requires less editing. End of an era by Herman Schwenk On March 30, 2019 the Battle River Crowfoot Electorial District Association (EDA) held a regular board meeting. At that meeting Kevin Sorenson announced that he would not be seeking re-election when the next Federal election is called, which is expected to take place on Oct. 21, 2019. Kevin has faithfully served this area as our Member of Parliament (MP)for the past 19 years. He first got involved when he served on the board of the Reform Party EDA and then became president of the EDA when Jack Ramsey was the MP. He was nominated to be a candidate for the 2000 election when Jack Ramsey stepped down. On Nov. 27, 2000 he was first elected as an MP for what was the Alliance Party at that time. PRAIRIEVIEW During his time as an MP he was involved in two Schwenk amalgamations of conservative parties. The first one was when the Reform Party amalgamated with the Alliance Party to become the Reform Alliance Party and then it was changed to the Alliance Party of Canada. After the formation of this party, Stephen Harper was elected the leader of this new party. This still left two right wing parties. Peter McKay was the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Stephen Harper knew that neither party could form government without the other so the cry became “unite the right”. After some intense negotiation the two leaders were able to come to an agreement to unite the two parties into the Conservative Party of Canada with the acronym of CPC. The agreement became official on Dec. 7, 2003. Kevin was elected as an opposition member in 2000 and 2004. In 2006 Stephen Harper was elected to the first of his two terms as a minority government. In 2011 Kevin was elected as an MP for the fifth time when the CPC won a majority Government. He won again in 2015 but he again became an opposition member as the CPC were defeated by Trudeau Liberals. During his time as an MP he went through two electoral boundary changes and each time the area that he represented got larger. Rural ridings due not have the population density that urban ridings have. Rural MP’s have more work than an urban MP due to the large area that they represent and MP’s in Western Canada spend more time traveling than MP’s in the rest of the country. Also, in Kevin’s case he had one of the largest ridings in Canada to serve with some people living all over it. Kevin was very dedicated to his responsibility in serving the people that he represented. I doubt if the people of this electoral district had any idea of the tremendous amount of time that he spent in representing their concerns. He told us at the meeting that he spent about nine hours a week just riding in airplanes. It was not just flying from Edmonton to Ottawa with the various responsibilities of being an MP, he was expected to attend functions all over Canada and often around other parts of the world. I am of the opinion that we were fortunate to have a dedicated person like Kevin Sorenson for our MP for that length of time. I was told that the average length of time for an MP’s term is six years. Kevin has, in his last two elections, a plurality of over 80 per cent of the vote, the highest of any elected MP in Canada. To get that level of support in an election tells you that he was highly regarded by his constituents. Enjoy your retirement Kevin you have earned it. AGRICULTURE ECA REVIEW HANNA/CORONATION/STETTLER, AB M A y 2'19 7 Yearned for higher education throughout her life Gwendolyn Victoria Eichhorn Lee, a long-time resident of Stettler, departed this world on April 8, 2019 at her home in Nevis with Jim by her side, four days before her 70th birthday. She was born in Edmonton at the Beulah Home for young women on April 12, 1949. Soon after, she was chosen by Emil and Gwen Eichhorn as their new daughter, and sister to Bill and Stan. Five years later, another baby girl, Evelyn was chosen to complete their family. Gwen attended school in Stettler and church at St. Lee Peter Lutheran. Growing up on the family farm south of Stettler in the Warden area, she longed for a broader education and life experience. She was fortunate to complete Grades 11 and 12 in Camrose at the Lutheran College. The summer between Grade 11 and 12 she returned home to work at the Club Café. It was there that she met Bill Lee and they were married after graduation on Nov. 4, 1967. This new chapter of her life took her to Halkirk where they bought their first farm, later taking over Bill’s family farm. Then, the babies came, Raymond Emil Oct. 8, 1969, Angela Catherine Diana, Nov. 25, 1970 and Jordan William, Dec. 3, 1971. Ten years later, Gwen and her children moved back to Stettler. She began working for John H. Grant accounting. They settled in nicely, with many friends and family close by. Her amazing parents helped her so much during these years and extended family always involved them in gatherings. Many good times were had with cousins from the Kirtley, Shuckburgh and Eichhorn families. Gwen was always yearning for a higher education, so, in the summer of 1980, she moved her family to Camrose to attend the Lutheran College to obtain her Bachelor of Arts Degree. Her dream of a Masters degree took her to Saskatoon University for the next few years. In 1989 Gwen returned to Stettler. That September she lost her beloved sister, Evelyn and decided to stay in Stettler. Gwen worked for Campbell Accounting during tax season, then managed Heartland Bowl until it changed ownership. Gwen had a passion for bowling and continued playing throughout the years. She then went into retail at Work World in the mall. An opportunity to buy this franchise came, so she did, soon after moving the store to a downtown location. When Work World was taken over by Mark’s Work Wearhouse, Gwen decided not to buy another franchise and closed the store. The next chapter of her life took her on to real estate. She easily obtained her license and began working for Francis Nicoll at Sutton Landmark Realty. Following his retirement, Lynn Engel joined the team. When Lynn left to pursue her dreams, Norma Leslie came to work. She was always there to help and guide them through their adult years. She passed on morals, honesty and integrity and was honoured, by them, passing on these attributes to her loving grandchildren. Gwen always wanted to be involved and strived to belong. This made her a strong member of many groups. She was an avid believer in a higher power which gave her guidance on her journey of life and new love. Gwen began dating Jim Ainsworth and eventually moved to their home in Nevis. She finally felt truly at home and loved him so much. Gwen loved to travel. She experienced time in Maui, Mexico, Costa Rica and many trips to Victoria. Through her involvement with Sutton Landmark Realty broker, Neil Stevens, she was able to experience South Africa. She saw firsthand how AIDS affected the suffering communities and what little they had to protect themselves. Many trips were made with Jim, including the Yukon, Comox, Vancouver and Victoria. They travelled to Ft. McMurray to see Janaya, Calmar to visit Kayla and James, Calgary to visit Carma, Jon, Nolan and Daria and Jeri. They were thrilled to go see Isaac, Ava and Harper in various places as they played hockey and ball. Ariel and Holly welcomed them to their new home in Red Deer. They were especially honoured to represent Stettler in Alabama for Eastern Star and Atlanta, Georgia for Rotary. She always enjoyed her meetings with the Warden Ladies and being involved where needed. Gwen’s family was so precious to her. Many gatherings were enjoyed at Angela’s with all her family. Gwen influenced many people in her lifetime. Her wisdom, love and honesty will be treasured by all who knew her. Gwen is survived by her loving family: partner Jim Ainsworth of Nevis; children: Ray Lee of Sylvan Lake, Angela (Mike) Blackmore of Stettler and Jordan Lee of Erskine; grandchildren: Kayla (James) Vanderleest of Calmar, Janaya Lee of Fort McMurray, Jeri Blackmore of Calgary, Ariel Blackmore of Red Deer, Holly Blackmore of Red Deer, Isaac Lee of Erskine, Ava Lee of Erskine and Harper Lee of Erskine; Jim’s daughter Carma (Jonathan) King of Calgary and their children Nolan and Daria; brothers Bill (Lillian) Kirtley of Stettler and Stan Eichhorn (Sharon Adamson) of Stettler; nieces, nephews, other family members and many dear friends and associates. Gwen was predeceased by her parents Gwen and Emil Eichhorn; sister Evelyn Gullickson and first born infant son, Leonard Lamont Lee. A celebration of Gwen’s life was held on Fri. April 12, 2019 with Rev. Ross Helgeton officiating. Gwen was laid to rest at Lake View Cemetery, Stettler, Ab.
