Family Weekend

Welcome to the spring 2019 edition of our newly rebranded newsletter,
imagine.
One of the reasons why I wanted to join the committee during the last family weekend
was because as step-dad to Nathaniel and fairly new to his condition, I felt that
this support group was really helpful and welcoming, but completely unknown. When
I heard that the committee wanted to update the logo and website, I knew I could
help out and that I had the time and desire to do it. I don’t have a marketing degree,
my only real experiences have come from running my own business and charity
in California, so I self taught all the skills I needed to be successful, and now I can
transfer them here.
The website was relaunched after almost 30 days of continious work both on the
back end serverside management of the domain and also on the front end user site.
The logo was meant to look fresh and modern while retaining the original concept
look that people had become familiar with, and the website was designed to be easy
and accessible but also attractive and functional. I’m very pleased with the launch of
both the site and the logo and yet there is still more to come. We are working hard
to get an online shop setup so we can pre-sell merchanside for the family weekend,
and also for you to buy supportive logowear throughout the year.
This newsletter came about after studying many different types of newsletters
through issuu.com and trying to amalgamate the previous newsletters. Content was
always difficult for both the website and newsletter so the decision was made to
move the newsletter into a quarterly feature so it both recaps what has happened
and informs of what will be coming up next. I don’t want the newsletter to be a
repeat of information and I want it to involve everyone, so some little games and
puzzles are being added to engage the community. I hope this new format
impresses you and I am always open to suggestions to improve.
On the committee there was a little restructuring and Angie Stokes accepted the
Chairperson position and I added Vice-Chair to my list of jobs in order to support
Angie and Lucy and the rest of the committee as we look to raise awareness for our
30th anniversary in 2020.
Bookings for the next family weekend are open and will close July 31st.
It’s looking like it’s going to be another fantastic weekend, and new event features
will constantly be released. I can’t wait to meet the new people and catch up with the
others, imagine the fun!
Thanks,
Not like most sisters.
She slouches at the kitchen table across from
me, a Girl’s World styling head doll placed in
front of her. There’s not much hair left on it
now, and the blonde colour has faded so you
can clearly see the scalp showing through
and the ‘follicles’ in its head where the nylon
hair used to be.
Ellie presses a hairbrush onto the doll’s head,
pushing the hair upwards in a
clumsy back-combing movement. Has she
seen someone do that before? Does she
know that technique is supposed make the
hair look thicker, bigger? Read More>>
Nathaniel’s PA.
In 2018 we were awarded direct payments
for Nathaniel. This meant that
we were given a set amount of money
each month to provide
respite for Nathaniel. We had a choice
of how to use them, we could employ a
care agency or we could employ
someone ourselves (a personal
assistant).
Straight away the agency route was
ruled out us as we know Nathaniel required
consistency.....
Forever Savvy
When Rebecca now 27 was born, prospects for adulthood
were bleak. We were told lots of things that she
wouldn’t be able to do including, talking, and running
but no one really said what she would be able to do.
We used to joke that she would make a good stamp
licker as she liked to lick everything, but the Post Office
scuppered those career plans with the invention of
self-adhesive stamps.
Rebecca came to the end of school life and activities
became scarce. In order to maintain sanity, I needed
Rebecca to go and do something a few days a week
so I could catch up on jobs.
