Appeal for Bermondsey hero’s medals
The family of a war hero who
saved a trapped priest in a
bombed church in Bermondsey
has made a plea for the return
of his stolen medals.
When a V2 rocket hit the
Church of the Most Holy Trinity
in Dockhead in March 1945, Fr
Edmund Arbuthnott was left
trapped inside under a timber
beam.
Edward Heming of the
Bermondsey Light Rescue
service heard his cries for help
and pulled him out from under
the wreckage.
Now his 82-year-old son
Raymond, whose home in
Biddenden, near Ashford, was
burgled in February, is asking for
people’s help in the search for
his father’s medals, which
include the George Cross, along
with a crucifix given to him by
Fr Arbuthnott.
“The medals are like a piece
of my life that is missing,” said
Mr Hemming. “I cannot rest
until I know that they are back
where they belong.
While Father Arbuthnott
survived the bomb, going on to
become head of Southwark
Catholic Rescue Society and
heavily involved with the Young
Christian Workers, three other
priests were killed, Fr Stephen
Spillane, Fr Finbar MacCarthy
and Fr Michael O’Riordan.
still cannot believe it. Of course
we were not expecting it - but
we are all really really happy
because the film has such a
good message.
“We were all watching it from
a viewing apartment we had
rented - there were about 12 of
us watching it together. It was
just the best night ever.”
Her father, Kevin, said: “She
began editing the movie in her
bedroom and I said to her you
need an office but office space
is expensive and so we built a
log cabin and put it in our
garden and ran electricity there
and that is where she worked.”
