Heroic Bermondsey nun
honoured in Nottingham
Over 400 Catholics took part in a
Procession of the Blessed Sacrament
through Nottingham to remember a
Bermondsey-born nun who worked
with the poor and dying.
Venerable Mary Potter founded The
Little Company of Mary in 1877 after
moving to Nottingham. She and her
sisters operated from a warehouse in
Hyson Green, a poor part of the city,
and went out and helped the sick and
poor in their homes.
Mary was born in a house on Old
Jamaica Road in Bermondsey in 1847
and was one of five children. After
her father emigrated to Australia,
her mother was left to bring up the
children alone.
Mary was plagued by illness and
died in Rome in 1913. In 1988 Pope
John Paul II declared her venerable.
Her remains were returned to
Nottingham in 1997, where she was
buried in St Barnabas Cathedral.
The gathering in Nottingham
included members of her order from
some of the fourteen countries it
works in around the world.
Mary is remembered in the city by
the Mary Potter Centre in Hyson
Green, which houses NHS and other
public services, and a heritage
centre, which contains a crucifix
made from the wood of a tree in
Hyson Green, the clothes she wore,
her hairbrush, sunglasses, and sewing
box. One of the city’s trams is also
named after her.

Police horses visit
Croydon school
Police cadets at Coloma Convent Girls’ School in
Croydon were visited by two police horses.
The horses, Kennedy and Excalibur, were from
the mounted branch of the Metropolitan Police,
based at Lewisham, and were accompanied by
their handlers, PC Amanda Doble and PC Paul
Looker.
Kennedy and Excalibur are employed regularly
at football matches, in crowd control, on riot
duty and also as a visible police presence on the
streets.
Shroud of Turin replica
displayed at Ramsgate
A full-size copy of the world-famous Shroud of
Turin was featured in an exhibition at St
Augustine’s Shrine in Ramsgate.
The replica image, printed photograph printed
onto cotton, was created by American
photographer, Barrie Schwortz, who was the
official photographer at the Shroud of Turin
Research Project examination of the shroud in
1978.
The exhibition also included original Roman
nails, a replica whip and a spear. There was also
information boards about art, history and the
latest research on the shroud.
Students become
film extras
A service of thanksgiving was
held at St George’s Cathedral
for those who have donated
their bodies for medical
education, training, and
research.

Anatomy Office on behalf of the
Cafod Kent
pilgrimage
This month, Cafod supporters
will be making a pilgrimage
through the Kent countryside to
express solidarity with refugees.
The event takes place on
Saturday 9th June and begins at
St Francis de Sales Church in
Hartley at 10.30am, where there
will be a shared lunch.
Following this, there will be a
three to four mile walk along
pathways via St Mary’s,
Fawkham, and All Saints,
Hartley, with stops for prayer
and reflection along the way.
There will be transport for those
less able.
The day will end with Mass at
5.30pm at St Francis de Sales.

London and South East
Committee of Anatomists, this
was the first time this annual
event had been held in the
cathedral.
It was dedicated to all those
who donated their bodies during
the past year and who have thus
contributed, even after death,
to the benefit of future
generation.
The service involved staff and
students at Brighton and Sussex
Medical School; Imperial College
London; King’s College London;
Queen Mary University of
London; St George’s University
of London; and University
College London.
Music was provided by the
choir of King’s College London
accompanied by the director of
music of the cathedral, Norman
Harper.
A group of students from St Michael’s Catholic
College in Bermondsey are to appear in a British
comedy film.
The sixteen sixth form students landed roles
as extras in Blinded By the Light during a twoday
work experience placement at Ealing
Studios.
The film stars Rob Brydon and Hayley Atwell
and is directed by Gurinder Chadha, whose
credits include Bend It Like Beckham and Bride
& Prejudice. It follows a British Pakistani
teenager growing up in Luton in the 1980s with a
love of Bruce Springstein.
The St Michael’s students took part in several
classroom scenes and some were given lines.

Special puppy visits
Bromley school
Pupils at St Joseph’s Catholic School in Bromley
received a visit from a very special puppy.
In 2016 the school raised £1,798 towards the
training of guide dogs by the Guide Dog
Association after a visit from Paulette Obee,
who has been blind from birth.
As a result, the charity allowed the school to
call a puppy Joseph. His visit to the school was
greeted with great excitement by the pupils.
Joseph will complete his training as a guide
dog next year.
Wembley youth event
Bookings are now open for Flame 2019, the
event next March at the SSE Arena Wembley for
young Catholics. Southwark Catholic Youth
Service has secured 500 seats near the front.
