Paul Harris is one of the UK’s most influential music educationalists. He studied 

the clarinet at the Royal Academy of Music, where he won the August Manns Prize 

for outstanding performance in clarinet playing and where he now teaches. 

He is in great demand as a teacher, composer, and writer (with over 600 books to 

his name). His inspirational masterclasses and workshops continue to influence 

thousands of young musicians and teachers all over the world in both the 

principles and practice of musical performance and education. 

Paul is also an examiner and adjudicator and is frequently asked to take part in national events including the Chamber

Applying Simultaneous Learning 

in lessons and practice 

Simultaneous Learning is an approach that I’ve been developing for many years now. I have written extensively 

about it, observed many lessons and discussed and presented my ideas to teachers all over the world. It is a 

pro-active (rather than re-active) approach, based on the brain’s natural desire to learn organically. It’s about 

creating a flow of continuously achievable and appropriate musical activities that lead to real understanding. 

Ultimately it produces positive and independent learners. 

The Simultaneous Learning way of teaching is 

based on 4 principles. We teach pro-actively – 

not reactively (of course we do react – but not to 

poor, misunderstood or mistake-filled work). We 

teach through the ‘ingredients’ of the music, we 

make lots of connections, and we do this all in an 

empowering, non-judgemental and positive way. 

I’ve created these two free resources to further 

help teachers and students put Simultaneous 

Learning into practice, both during lesson 

time and at home, and to make those crucial 

connections between all of the musical 

‘ingredients’: 

The Simultaneous Learning Map of the Musical World presents all of the musical ‘ingredients’, showing 

that everything connects. It is an ideal aid for use in lessons and practice when learning to thinking in a truly 

Simultaneous Learning way. A lesson is really a voyage of discovery around this map, moving in a logical and 

sequential way from one area to another. When lessons really follow this process, pupils begin to see and get 

the whole picture resulting, ultimately, in really knowing and understanding their music. 

The Simultaneous Learning Practice Map is a revolutionary way to set up practice. Take a piece to be 

practised and write its title in the box; add words to describe the character of the piece underneath. Then set 

about filling in the significant features in the appropriate bubbles and begin working through these, drawing 

lines to make connections between them as you go along. You will achieve some really effective Simultaneous 

Practice! You can use a Practice Map for new pieces or for pieces in a more advanced state of learning.
