CMA CGM unveils comprehensive
new digital booking channel
Date: 25 th April 2019
Box shipping group’s eSolutions platform promises to take online offering to
next level, including instant spot quotations and one-step eBooking
capability
Container shipping group CMA CGM today unveiled its new “vision for a
digital customer journey” that promises to take its online offering to the next
level with the launch of CMA CGM eSolutions.
Describing CMA CGM eSolutions as “a 100% digital eco-system”, it said the
new offering included a new range of features “to digitize the customer
experience”, including instant spot quotations and a one-step eBooking
capability. It said the new sales channel offered to customers of the CMA CGM
Group reflected the fact that “digitization is deeply transforming the world
economy and inventing new market rules. It is becoming essential for
businesses and individuals to develop new ways of doing business and
interacting with one another. A lever for growth, differentiation and
performance, digitization eases and simplifies the relationship with customers
to provide them a flawless and more efficient customer experience.
It described CMA CGM eSolutions as “an entirely digital eco-system
comprising an online agency and other e-commerce channels such as
Electronic Data Interchanges (EDI) and Application Programming Interfaces
(API) which allow the digital transmission of relevant information and data

between CMA CGM and its customers.”
The shipping group stressed that a range of digital features were already
available for CMA CGM’s customers, noting: “A large majority of the CMA
CGM Group’s bookings are made via its eCommerce solutions, among which
half are made through the Group’s web platform. With CMA CGM eSolutions,
customers will have the possibility to experience a 100% digital journey when
they choose CMA CGM to transport their goods.”
It continued: “For several years, CMA CGM has developed and launched a
whole set of digital solutions such as schedule research, quotation request,
booking, shipping instructions, documentation, shipping dashboard, tracking.
Today, the CMA CGM Group is strengthening its digital customer experience
by offering its clients a new sales channel to ease their journey and allow
them to strengthen their productivity and develop their business.”
The line said new features were currently available at a regional or global level
and would be gradually rolled out on the different platforms of the group’s
brands, including:
• ePricing: customer’s real time access to their respective rates, and instant
spot quotation;
• eBooking: booking recast (5 steps to 1 step) for a simplified, more intuitive
and autocomplete booking;
• eBill of Lading: fully digital Bill of Lading;
• eTracking: visualization of customer’s cargo position at sea on a map with
updated time of arrival;
• ePayment: freight invoice online payment;
• eCharges: live cost estimation including a D&D simulator
CMA CGM said more features would be launched in the coming months to
further improve the customer experience with CMA CGM and its subsidiaries,
including: An offering of value-added services such as insurance products;

existing features.
As part of its eSolutions service, CMA CGM said it will now offer priority
boarding to its customers using its digital platform, allowing them to secure
space on board.
“First offered by CMA CGM from India to Europe, priority boarding will be
gradually offered to other countries and carriers within the CMA CGM Group,”
it explained. “With a secured space on board for their container, customers
will be able to plan more efficiently their supply chain thus enhancing their
business and efficiency towards their own customers.”
Rodolphe Saadé, chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, said digitisation
was “a key strategic priority for the group’s development”, and digitization
was “at the centre of the Group’s strategy to anticipate our customers’ needs”.
The company said this digital strategy relies on:
• The Group’s internal expertise to develop innovations;
• Partnerships with other leading groups and start-ups on key fields such as:
Blockchain, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things;
• CMA CGM Ventures, a corporate venture structure dedicated to investing
in innovative technologies. It has already invested in 15 start-ups
worldwide (Nyshex, Traxens or Edray);
• And ZEBOX, an international start-up incubator and accelerator initiated
by the CMA CGM Group and located in Marseilles, which will house 30
start-ups by the end of 2019.
“With CMA CGM eSolutions, the group’s clients now have access to all their
shipping needs with a single click, making their experience with CMA CGM
simpler and more transparent to enhance their business and peace of mind
throughout their journey with the CMA CGM Group,” the company concluded.

Maersk takes
customs clearance digital
Source: Lloyd’s Loading List
Date: 29 th April 2019
Danish line claims new service is a 'first' for a boxship operator
Maersk Line has launched a new digital ocean customs clearance service in
seven key European markets.
The new Customs Clearance online shipping management platform, which the
Danish liner giant claims is a first for the container industry, is being rolled out
in seven European countries - Germany, France, Denmark, The Netherlands,
Poland, United Kingdom and Spain - with the goal of expanding the service
globally by the end of 2019.
Maersk believes the platform, which was piloted for two years in Germany
and is available for all types of cargo via all Maersk brands, will enable
customers to more easily navigate the many different rules, regulations and
laws that apply when cargo is shipped across borders.
"This new one-stop-shop allows us to timely and efficiently handle export and
import declarations for our customers,” said Vincent Clerc, Chief Commercial
Officer of A.P. Moller - Maersk.
“The solution provides downstream benefits of full governance and
compliance, eliminates the need to provide a quote as pricing is displayed
online, saving three to five minutes per quote.

"In other words, it saves our customers time, money and headaches reducing
the number of intermediaries they deal with from three or four to just one as
well as paperwork which subsequently reduce the time spent on transactional
procedures. Time saved they can then devote to grow their businesses."

Digital initiative can 'change course'
of container shipping
Source: Lloyd’s Loading List
Date: 29 th April 2019
Priority is to develop common information technology standards in order to
increase the industry’s efficiency, says logistics consultant
As reported by Lloyd’s Loading List, Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd, Mediterranean
Shipping Co and Ocean Network Express formally launched the Digital
Container Shipping Association (DCSA) earlier this week after it received
regulatory approval from the Federal Maritime Commission last month.
Andre Simha, who will chair the DCSA’s supervisory board, said it would move
container shipping into the digital era by collaborating with multiple
stakeholders from the entire value chain and driving standardisation and
digitalisation.
Wolfgang Lehmacher, leading logistics consultant and the former Head of
Supply Chain and Transport Industries at the World Economic Forum in
Geneva and New York, welcomed the formation of DCSA.
“This can be a change in the course of the container shipping industry and the
beginning of overarching governance to prepare for the digital era,” he told
Lloyd’s Loading List. “DCSA brings container shipping towards good waters. It’s
great to see the industry taking up the challenge to prepare for the digital
era.”

Centrolene
NewsEdge Know more.
Page: 9
However, he said DCSA must work closely with other organisations if it is to
succeed. “Applying a final set of global protocols across the economy might
take a while as many different stakeholders have to be convinced and
onboard,” he said.
“The association needs to align with collaborative efforts across the economy
led by other organisations and alliances.”
According to Lehmacher, this should include the United Nations Rules for
Electronic Data Interchange for Administration, Commerce and Transport
(UN/EDIFACT), which has defined a range of global standards, and the United
Nations Centre for Trade Facilitation and Electronic Business (UN/CEFACT),
which incorporates blockchain with standards like EDI-FACT.
He also said the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), the
Blockchain in Transport Alliance (BITA) and OpenShipping.org, which offers an
open source standard for global shipping, should be consulted.
“DCSA’s priority is to develop common information technology standards in
order to increase the industry’s efficiency for both customers and shipping
lines,” he added.
“Digitization only unfolds its full value if all stakeholders along the chain
interact and exchange seamlessly. Establishing the protocols to enable this is
the association’s goal and is the correct goal.”
Digital developments have been mushrooming across the global economy,
according to Lehmacher. For example, Korean Customs Service (KSC) recently
signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Korean operator of
Malltail to develop a blockchain-based customs platform for the e-commerce
industry. Walmart has also announced that all suppliers of leafy green
vegetable for Sam’s and Walmart are required to upload their data to the
Walmart blockchain by September 2019.

Centrolene
NewsEdge Know more.
Page: 10
“Since Maersk and IBM announced their collaboration to use blockchain
technology in trade in March 2017, distributed ledger technology proof of
concepts have flourished in the container shipping industry,” said Lehmacher.
“Port of Antwerp, Pacific International Lines, and PSA International to name
only a few have all carried out blockchain pilots and there is no shortage in
technology start-ups.
“But the journey has been anything but smooth. In May 2018, two liner
companies - Hapag-Lloyd and CMA CGM - stressed the urgent need for an
industry standard, rejecting Maersk and IBM's blockchain solution and
development of numerous distributed ledger technologies for the container
sector.”
However, he said over the course of 2018 there had been a mindset shift in
the shipping industry – from silo-behaviour towards more willingness to
collaborate.
“The Global Shipping Business Network (GSBN), an open digital platform
based on distributed ledger technology consortium, is a first for its industry.
Another piece of evidence is that the Port of Rotterdam and the Port of
Hamburg have entered into a data partnership.
The competing ports started to share data to optimize calls of liners in the
North Europe area.
The ports also expressed their willingness to expand their model to other
ports going forward.”
Lehmacher said the world was rapidly becoming a digitally connected
ecosystem and it was time container shipping caught up.

Centrolene
NewsEdge Know more.
Page: 11
“Digitization is the representation of the physical world, including resources
and assets, behaviours and activities in the digital space,” he added. “The
digital era is about platforms and automation, about ‘intelligent assets’ or the
effort to make all things in the economy ‘intelligent’.
“Digitization allows us to easily identify, assess and leverage what is available
in the ecosystem – through dashboards and touchscreens. Cranes and
containers, ships and trucks can so be monitored and moved across the ports
and beyond from any place on the planet, provided it is connected. Data
sharing at the earliest moment allows the parties involved to prepare for the
arrival of vehicles and goods, which increases efficiency and avoids
disruptions – as unfavourable events along the supply chain can be
anticipated.”
Lehmacher concluded: “DCSA is the new vehicle of the shipping industry
charged with changing up gears in its effort to digitize - it is much needed.”

Digitalisation does not mean a race to
the bottom on pricing
Source: Air Cargo News
Date: 10 th April 2019
Digitalisation will not result in a race to the bottom on pricing for forwarders,
according to SeaIntelligence Consulting founder Lars Jensen.
Speaking at the annual general meeting (AGM) of forwarder association The
WACO System, Jensen warned that forwarders need to embrace digitalisation
or get left behind.
“Digitalisation is something that should be embraced and that you cannot
ignore, if you don’t jump on the train, you’ll end up under it,” he said.
“From my experience in the industry, digitalisation is not what determines
profitability, it is the people that do that.”
“There is a general feeling in the freight forwarding market that the
transparency that digitalisation brings will lead to a race to the bottom as
companies compete to lower their prices,” explained Jensen.
“But research by Sea Intelligence Consulting in 2018 found that 49% of cargo
owners did not go for the cheapest offer at the time of booking, meaning
there is plenty of space to develop brand and service strength instead of
focussing on pricing.”

Centrolene
NewsEdge Know more.
Page: 13
The expense and technicality of digitalisation are often highlighted as
obstacles by freight forwarders, but smaller businesses are more likely to
benefit because digitalisation boosts efficiency in targeted, niche areas that
freight forwarders normally specialise in.
WACO’s AGM, which this year attracted 115 delegates from 99 countries,
provides networking opportunities for members who can take part in bilateral
meetings in order to grow business.
“Every year the WACO AGM is an opportunity for our members to gather,
discuss, and share ideas on the most important issues in our industry,” said
Richard Charles, executive director, The WACO System.
“I would like to extend my gratitude to the speakers who shared their
knowledge and expertise that will help to make our industry more productive,
personable and profitable.”
