Welcome to our May half-term issue! We’ve had a wonderful 

Easter break with the warmer weather and the days getting 

longer, and because Easter was so late this year, we’re nearly 

at the May half term holiday, so it won’t be long before we 

are thinking about the Summer holidays. This is the time to 

plan for holiday camps and activities and there are many to 

choose from this year. 

In this issue we are delighted to bring you a brilliant choice 

of events and activities for all the family to enjoy, many of 

which are free. There are some fabulous family shows listed 

on our Box Office page for your budding theatre goers too. 

Education and tuition features in this edition, as many 

parents are looking at the options available preparing for the 

new academic year in September. 

As always, don’t forget to enter our competitions on page 

22 and do take a look at our newspage, there’s an exciting 

national competition there too!

NEWS 

WhizzFizzFest 2019 is back… and 

this year it’s better than ever! 

On Saturday 22 June, Aylesbury’s 

fantastic family-friendly literary and arts 

festival, with children’s literature and 

imagination firmly at its heart, returns 

to the town centre for all to enjoy! 

Kicking off at 10.30am with the 

much loved parade, WhizzFizzFest 

offers an excellent programme of 

free and ticketed activities! This 

year welcomes awesome authors, 

Cressida Cowell (How to Train Your 

Dragon), Judith Kerr, (The Tiger Who 

Came to Tea and Mog), and Nick 

Butterworth, (Percy the Park Keeper) 

to the main marquee. 

Hosted in the beautiful gardens 

of Bucks County Museum, will be 

a taste-bud-tickling Teddy Bear’s 

picnic offering traditional food for 

the kiddies and street food for the 

grown-ups. The Runway Stage 

comes to life once again with music, 

dance and theatre throughout the 

day, as well as playing host to the 

fantastic fancy dress competition 

(which has some really awesome 

prizes by the way!) 

And, new for 2019, WhizzFizzFest 

will be rounded off with asuper-fun 

Silent Disco! Pick from retro party 

hits, chart toppers or club classics on 

your own personal headphones and 

dance the end of the day away with 

family and friends!

Wildlife Zone 

The aim of the Wildlife Zone at 

green Dragon Eco Farm is to support 

the protection and conservation of 

species that are at risk in the wild by 

being actively involved in breeding 

programmes so that animals can 

be returned to their natural habitats. 

Also, the Zone is home to rescued 

wildlife in need of care, sanctuary, 

and possibly rehabilitation. Expert 

staff teach visitors about the animals 

and their conservation -from red 

squirrels to birds of prey –during 

training sessions and demonstrations. 

For those visitors who are keen 

to get more involved, Green Dragon 

offer Ranger for aDay which is 

a three-hour experience in the 

company of one of their 

wildlife experts where visitors 

learn how to handle and care 

for the animals. 

Green Dragon welcomed 

two female European 

Polecats and an additional 

Silver Fox that will be joined 

this year by pine marten and 

lynx. The final enclosure, 

which will be for the lynx, 

will be finished by the summer 

making the Wildlife Zone Project 

with its huge naturalistic structures 

complete. 

Training is continuing with the 

young birds of prey and the pair 

of barn owls are now flying in 

tandem. Also, the new silver fox is 

responding quickly to its feeding 

training and there are exciting Private 

Experiences available for visitors 

involving feeding and training the 

foxes. And, if all goes to plan, the 

reindeer females will be giving birth 

from the end of May onwards to the 

first ever reindeer babies born at 

Green Dragon!

With so much to see and do, 

Armed Forces Day 2019 promises 

to be afantastic family day out –

This year’s local event will take 

place for the first time at Wycombe 

Air Park. It’ll be packed with many 

family friendly attractions and 

activities including air 

displays, live music, 

fairground rides, craft 

stalls, aclimbing wall, 

and much more. 

All tickets are free

advance -you won’t 

be able to turn up 

on the day without a 

ticket. 

Armed Forces Day

Cressida 

Cowell 

Cressida Cowell is one of the 

UK’s most beloved children’s 

authors. She has brought us 

the fantastic novel series How to Train 

Your Dragon, which has subsequently 

become an award-winning 

DreamWorks film franchise, and now 

joins Primary Times to discuss her 

latest magical series The Wizards 

of Once, her literary inspirations 

growing up and her Free-Writing 

Fridays Campaign. 

After the success of How to Train Your 

Dragon, Cressida Cowell launched 

her newest book series Wizards of 

Once in 2017, with its sequel ‘Twice 

Magic’ arriving in paperback June ’19. 

Cressida explains that the books are 

set at the end of the Bronze Ages, and 

at the beginning of a new age. “It’s 

a world in which magic really exists. 

There are two tribes and they are 

fighting each other. The two children, 

the girl hero and the boy hero, have 

been brought up to hate each other, 

and it’s about what happens when 

these children meet.” 

Growing up, Cressida was inspired 

particularly by the book The Ogre 

Downstairs, by Diana Wynne Jones. 

“It’s about children who find a magical 

chemistry set. I read it, loved it, read 

it aloud to all my little siblings and 

cousins, and then I read it aloud to 

my own children. Iwrite my books to 

be read aloud way beyond the age. I 

always say to parents don’t just leave it 

all up to the school, read aloud to kids 

just 10 minutes per day.” 

With a passion for literature, Cressida 

Cowell is a huge advocate of children 

reading and writing for pleasure from a 

young age. “I can’t imagine life without 

books. I get all my knowledge about 

history, about human nature, about the 

world around me from literature.” 

Cressida explains that “educational 

attainment, reading for pleasure and 

economic success are all particularly 

linked. But education isn’t just about 

attainment, so the impact on their 

happiness is true as well. In difficult 

times, a book can help you through. 

I’ve had children write to me, for 

example, and say that whilst being 

bullied, ‘Hiccup was my friend’. There 

is so much that can be gained from 

loving books.” 

To help parents encourage their 

children to read at home, Cressida has 

shared some of her own top tips. “Go 

for what they’re interested in, if they 

love animals go for books on animals. 

Boys often like fact books, for example 

I put lots of made up fact pages in my 

Dragons and Wizards books.” 

“Read aloud to your kids for 10 

minutes every day. Even if you are 

doing the reading, you’re sending this 

message that books are something 

fun – and that’s so important.” 

“Try as hard as you can not to make 

learning to read a struggle. This is 

such a key thing for parents. In the 

end, I didn’t listen to my children 

reading at the end of the school day 

when they were 4years old. They 

were exhausted, so Iwould try and do 

it over breakfast when they’re a 

bit perkier. Really try and stay calm 

and patient –make it joyful. It’s all 

about the joy of reading and writing, 

that’s all I’m trying to do. It’s the 

children who enjoy reading and writing 

in the end – it’s the best education.” 

Cressida’s newest innovation to inspire 

children’s imagination and creativity 

is her Free-Writing Friday campaign, 

which is 15 minutes every Friday for 

a child to have a book in which they 

can write whatever they want, and the 

teacher doesn’t mark it. “In this book 

just for 15 minutes, nothing matters 

apart from the kid having fun. They 

can write a story, they can design a 

game, and it’s about focusing on the 

joy of writing.” 

“I did that because when Iwas in year 

2, I had a teacher who did that for 

me. My handwriting was terrible, my 

spelling wasn’t great, and she gave 

me a book which was just about me 

enjoying it. I learnt to enjoy writing.” 

“My campaign was designed as a 

really practical way to try and help the 

kids have somewhere where they’re 

enjoying it. That’s what happened to 

me – It’s about the ideas. We need 

to get the children reading for fun. 

We need their creativity in science, 

we need their creativity in everything 

– so we’ve got to get these 

children being creative.”

Park welcomes tiny Porcupette 

twins. 

All expectations were exceeded 

when two-year-old Hannah was 

paired with the Park’s breeding 

male –aCape Porcupine called 

Prickle. 

Hopeful that the new pair would 

one day produce their first litter, 

keepers were slightly surprised 

to discover two tiny new arrivals 

during their early morning checks. 

Estelle explains: “Hannah gave 

birth overnight and Ifound the 

babies running and squeaking 

at each other in the morning. On 

the first checks, both adults were 

asleep with the Porcupettes tucked 

underneath them so they weren’t 

discovered until Iwent into the 

enclosure to clean and feed them

will be able to see the shearing taking 

place in the Animal Barn. 

Local artists working with wool 

– The International Feltmakers 

Association, the Chiltern Spinners, 

Dyers &Weavers, and local Knitters 

Anonymous, will be demonstrating 

the magical process of turning wool 

fibre into woollen cloth, yarn and 

garments using some of the wool 

from the breeds of sheep that you 

see at Green Dragon. Herdwick fleece 

can add such character to aheat 

resistant table mat! Visitors will have 

the opportunity to ‘have ago’ at some 

of the craft techniques on show with 

the help of the experts. 

Demonstrations will take place 

on the farm and in the Eco Centre 

Events Room, where there will also 

be an exhibition of work for sale 

showcasing the amazing diversity of 

wool in art, from fine art pictures to 

knitted garments and functional 3D 

items that can be both decorative and 

sculptural.
