We changed up all of our events. They included: Campaign Kick-off featuring a speaker and a shuk for our local agencies to show off their programs; Major Gifts dinner as a thank you with dancing and fun; a Pomegranate/Lion of Judah event at Clive Daniel Home with Beverly Gray speaking after a book festival program; and our sold-out Power of Community Celebration at the end of March, a thank you that showcased award recipients and their programs, and featured a jazz band. The Annual Campaign allows us to function. Not only does it give us the funds to make allocations to local and overseas agencies, it allows us to do the programming which occupies more and more of our Federation life. Jewish Federations were founded for the express purpose of raising money to take care of the needs of Jewish people locally and overseas. This has been the traditional model that Federations have operated under for well over 100 years in the US. However, times change. The needs of communities are different in different locations. There is a term that Jeffrey Feld uses, a “Functional Federation.” It is what we are. It means that we do the traditional fundraising to serve the needs of the community, but in addition we provide some services that were traditionally done by Jewish Community Centers. We do not have the population to have a traditional JCC. Most of us have swimming pools, tennis courts, pickleball courts, etc., in our living communities and do not need the Jewish community to provide those amenities. We are no longer excluded from country clubs because we are Jewish. However, a traditional JCC also provides learning and living to create Jewish relationships with classes, games, book festivals, non-religious, yet Jewish holiday celebrations, etc. We do all those things, some directly, others through our wholly owned subsidiaries, WCA and MCA. Doing those programmatic things and fundraising to allocate funds – this is what we do here in Greater Naples and that is what makes us a “Functional Federation.” It creates community. It builds a sense of belonging. It is a thread that hold us all together. It is, in a sense, a hybrid of the original Federation concept. It is because we are a functional Hundreds attended the Chanukah Celebration at Mercato in December 2018 Federation and our programming has become so important to our identity that we have embarked on our biggest project yet – the new building which Marc Saperstein and James Knafo explained to us earlier. Once we break ground, we fully expect to build as quickly as possible and hope sincerely to be in the new building in the fall of 2021. This is the true future of our community. We know everyone will want to play a part in creating a special building. Like our Annual Campaign this year, the Capital Campaign all STARTS WITH YOU. I realize that this is way too long. I knew it would be, because this is such an exciting time in our Federation’s history. Thank you for hanging in and thank you most importantly for working with the staff and volunteers to create our vibrant, welcoming and inclusive Jewish community.
