6 Federation Star June 2019 JEWISH FEDERATION WOMEN’S CULTURAL ALLIANCE www.WomensCulturalAlliance.com / 215-820-6697 How I turned things I love to do into assets for WCA By Sue Dean, WCA Secretary I’m a WCA “old timer.” I transitioned from the board of Brandeis Women’s Club to the board of Women’s Cultural Alliance over 10 years ago, where I now hold the position of secretary. The concept of using the knowledge and expertise of our members to form study groups and activity groups is so appealing that our membership continues to grow to now more than 1,500 members. As our membership grows, so does the need for new activities. My husband and I came to Naples to EAT and PLAY! I’ve always loved Mah Jongg. I’ve been playing for over 50 years, so organizing a WCA Mah Jongg group seemed perfectly logical. Honest, caring and knowledgable advice about assisted living options… at no cost to you! Personal and professional advice for you or a loved one when you need it the most In the beginning, a group of WCA Mahj players met at a local clubhouse every Monday, the day it was closed to the public, for an afternoon of lunch and Mah Jongg. There were routinely five or six tables of four, and because we rotated among the tables, we got to meet so many people from so many places. Mondays were as much about building friendships as playing Mahj. Eating my way through Naples was a hobby, so turning that hobby into an opportunity for others to share my love for food made me a natural to take over Ladies Who Lunch (LWL). Each month, a luncheon chairperson planned lunch at an area restaurant or club. As LWL Bruce B. Rosenblatt, Owner Senior Housing Expert 239.595.0207 www.SeniorHousingSolutions.net enters its second decade, it isn’t unusual for 50-plus women to attend. Everyone is seated by lottery – that way there’s an opportunity to share a meal with other Sue and Phil Dean enjoy a Jazz Junkie event at the Roadhouse Cafe ladies whom you may or may not know. At one LWL, all the tables had vegetable centerpieces. I drew a tomato from the lottery basket and sat at the “Tomato Table.” Six of us enjoyed each other’s company so much that we arranged to meet again for lunch, and then again, and then again for dinner with our husbands. Today these women are my longtime best friends. Another WCA perk! Ladies agree that the best part of Ladies Who Lunch isn’t the food, but the rich friendships that develop while sharing a meal with other WCA members. My husband and I love jazz – 1950s Mainstream, American Songbook Jazz! Several years ago, I started WCA Jazz Junkies as a way to connect with others who felt the same. Finding jazz venues in a community of our size was a challenge, but I connected with one musician and then another and another until I was on several jazz email lists. So many music greats from all over the country have chosen to retire in Naples and play their music in local venues. Jazz Junkies has a mailing list of more than 150 WCA members. About six times a season, small groups of us attend jazz events throughout the Greater Naples area. Our WCA membership is vital and exciting. We’re current and share a thirst for knowledge and new experiences. We seek enlightenment, friendship and community. There’s an old saying, “When you’re green you’re growing, when you stop growing, you become rotten.” WCA members are truly in the “Green Zone” as we continue to grow and evolve. If you are not already a member of WCA, I hope that you will consider joining us. Sue Dean is from St. Louis. Thirteen years ago, Sue and her husband Phil began spending their winters in Naples. They have enjoyed being in Naples so much that this year they sold their home in St. Louis and became full-time residents. Sue confessed that when they fi rst starting spending time in Naples, she was homesick and actually cried at night – until she joined Brandeis (which has since become WCA). Sue said, “Through Brandeis, and now through WCA, I have met hundreds of talented women and found a creative outlet for my talents and energy.” Time is Running Out Renew Your WCA Membership before Thursday, ✔ Receive an invitation to WCA’s fabulous Welcome Back Luncheon (Friday, November 22) ✔ Be included in the WCA Membership Directory ✔ Receive the 2019-2020 WCA Program Guide Don’t Miss Out!
