Liberty London Partnership Booklet

Liberty Church was born in New York City, with a heart for cities everywhere. We are church planting church with a vision to see the seeds of the gospel have an impact throughout the world. We are thrilled that some of that seed has taken root across the Atlantic, and we are launching our first Liberty Church community in London, this September. The vision God has put on our hearts is far bigger than something we can do alone. It needs a large, diverse team to stand together, serve together and outwork the dream God puts on our hearts together

FROM “JERUSALEM,” A POEM BY WILLIAM BLAKE

OUR VISION
TO KNOW CHRIST,
AND MAKE HIM KNOWN
OUR MISSION
FOLLOW JESUS
THRIVE IN COMMUNITY
MAKE A DIFFERENCE

OUR VALUES
LOVE
Love says, “Come as you are”.
We love because Christ first loved us.
And love opens the door for the truth.
By this everyone will know that you are my
disciples, if you love one another.
– John 13:35
TRUTH
Truth without love isn’t received; love without
truth isn’t true love. We treasure and preach
God’s Word as the highest form of truth.
Jesus said, “If you hold to my teaching, you are really
my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the
truth will set you free.”
– John 8:31-32
FREEDOM
The heart of the Gospel is all about freedom.
Jesus came to give you life, and life to the full.
If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.
– John 8:36
FAMILY
Liberty Church is a community,
not just a crowd.
We celebrate diversity in unity.
There’s room for you at the table.
God sets the lonely in families.
–Psalm 68:6
OTHERS
William Tyndale said, “The church exists
for those outside it.”
We’re a missional community that is
for our city, not just in it.
Open your eyes and look at the fields!
They are ripe for harvest.
– John 4:35

IN LONDON
AS IT IS
IN HEAVEN

THE
PETTMAN
FAMILY
JONNY, TASHA, NEVAEH, JOSIAH
Jonny and Tasha have been in full time ministry
for nearly twenty five years between them, most
recently serving at Frontline Church, Liverpool.
While on staff there Tasha completed her MA in
Pastoral Theology.
It was during this time that they first connected with
my wife, Andi & I and the team at Liberty Church
and they shared with us that for many years they had
dreamed of planting a church in. In an extraordinary
step of faith they relocated their family to New York
City for a nine month church planting residency,
much of it self-funded. In just a short amount of
time the Pettmans became like family to us and we
were confident that they had what it takes to pioneer
a faith community in a city like London.
We are looking forward to the journey ahead and to
launching Liberty Church London together.
THE HEART
A LETTER FROM TASHA PETTMAN
I want everyone to feel valued, to know they belong,
that their voice matters. I want Liberty Church to
be a community that accepts everyone from any
walk of life and helps them to discover their true
worth in the eyes of God. To develop a life changing
and life giving relationship with Jesus
When I was about to move up to high school, I had
my first real experience of rejection. It caused me
to begin doubting myself, doubting my value, and
to question whether I belonged. It was a small
incident but made a huge impact.
A teacher from the high school came to help me
transition between the schools. She asked me
which two kids would I like to be in a class with.
I was confident in my answers and named two girls
that I knew going to the same high school as me.
She looked at me and looked at her folder and what
she said had the most incredible impact on me. She
told me that those two girls had not put me down.
They hadn’t chosen me. I suddenly felt rejected,
I felt that I wasn’t good enough.
When the start of high school arrived and I was in
the same class as these girls, I sat with them, spent
time with them but always had this sense that I
didn’t belong, they hadn’t chosen me. I began to
believe that I had no value, and that my voice or
opinion was not worth hearing.
Through my church I connected with a mentor.
She helped me develop a greater relationship with
God, I learnt that I had value, that I do belong,
that my voice and opinion matter and that I could
achieve my dreams. Through one person drawing
me into their life, their community and into
a deeper relationship with Jesus, I found a life that
I hadn’t yet experienced. I had found belonging,
I had found freedom!

A LETTER FROM JONNY PETTMAN
When I was a teenager I would watch US TV.
There was one brand that every American teen
drama would feature heavily; Starbucks, the coffee
shop chain.
I grew up in Liverpool, England; a tea drinking city
in a tea drinking nation. There was one Starbucks
in Liverpool City Centre. Every weekend my
friends and I would get the underground into town
to go to the one and only Coffee Shop. Fast forward
to today and there are Starbucks, Costa Coffees,
Cafe Neros and thousands of cool, hipster coffee
shops. They are on every street corner. The once
tea drinking city of Liverpool now drinks coffee
(just like the rest of the UK).
The conversion from hundreds if years of
predominantly tea to coffee didn’t happen by
taking that one Coffee Shop and making it bigger
and bigger so that it could be the one Coffee Shop
for the city. It was by a new Coffee Shop opening in
a different area, then another one, and another and
then a different chain doing the same thing…
What if the church operated in a similar way?
I had this thought a while ago, but it was just a
small spark of an idea. Then Tasha and I came
across Liberty Church in New York. Paul and
Andi Andrew had started a church doing just that.
Planting a community in one area and then another
somewhere else, and then another and another…
This is what we hope to build in London. We
don’t plan to start one single church in one place,
but multiple life-giving communities, in and for
local communities across the city. Our dream is
for everyone in London to have a Liberty Church
community, right there in their neighbourhood.

THE HEART
A LETTER FROM PAUL ANDREW
Our family moved to New York City on June
4, 2010. In the moment in which we said
“yes” to God’s call to move here and plant
Liberty Church we knew two people in this
city. As it turns out, even those few people
we knew did not come to our church. Yet,
just one year after our arrival, we launched
our second church community in the city, a
sign of God’s goodness and the momentum
that had been built in a short amount of
time.
I distinctly remember the day I stood on
the Statue of Liberty, desperately seeking
God’s will for our plan to move to New
York. It was a hot August afternoon and
we’d waited for nearly two hours to make
the climb. Finally we stood at Liberty’s feet,
taking in the view. By this point we were all
but committed to moving to New York City.
Andi had distinctly heard God’s leading the
day before in the 9/11 Memorial in St. Paul’s
Chapel. But I wanted my own revelation,
something to come back to when the road
got tough. And I knew it would.
I remember feeling overwhelmed by the
size of the city, and the fact that at that
time we knew two people there. Two
people, in a city of millions. My business
was flourishing in Australia and suddenly
we were considering moving to New York
— the most expensive city in the world
during the worst financial crisis since the
Great Depression — and leaving family and
friends behind to plant a church. I thought
to myself many times, “Either this is God or
this is the craziest thing we’ve ever done.”
I stared at the Manhattan skyline. In all
honesty, I was worried as a husband and
dad wondering, “How will I provide?” Yes,
I know all the right things to say, but in my
humanity, I was afraid. Then as clearly as I
have ever heard the voice of God, I heard
Him ask me a question. A question that
has haunted me ever since. A question that
changed everything.
“What would you give for a city?”
When He asked me that, in an instant
everything changed. It wasn’t about
security. It wasn’t about me. It wasn’t about
us. It was about sacrifice. It was about
millions of people that needed Jesus. It was
about a city that God loves.
What was I willing to give? Unconditionally?
With uncertainty? Before provision?
Without a team? Without knowing how,
only why? What if it was just Andi and
I and the kids? Was I willing to lay down
my business? My large suburban house? My
home church of 20 years? My friendships?
Was I willing to give God control?
“What would you give for a city?”
The answer was simple. EVERYTHING.
I would give everything. The most costly
decision of my life, besides giving my life
to Christ. I wept. I died to myself and to
having my way.
I was reminded that the Bible says, “Very
truly I tell you, unless a kernel of wheat falls
to the ground and dies, it remains only a single
seed. But if it dies, it produces many seeds.”
John 12:24 (TNIV) Since that day many
blessings have come: People, favor, finance,
support, family, a home. The list goes on
and on. But it started with a sacrifice, and
every day since has been a reminder of the
goodness of God.
