SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES 2020
Introduction
“Ireland has the fourth highest teen suicide rate in the EU/OECD.”
Well-being of Young People Report 2017 UNICEF
According to research by UNICEF published in 2017 Ireland has the fourth highest teen suicide rate
in the EU/OECD region. The organisation's latest report card on well-being of young people found
that Ireland's suicide rate amongst adolescents aged 15 to 19 was 10.3 per 100,000 population and
ranks well above the national country average of 6.1 per 100,000.
Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland has been working since 2007 to reduce the numbers of young
people who take, or attempt to take, their own lives by providing simple, easy to follow, awareness
and prevention programmes targeted towards young people, their teachers and parents. We do this
by providing dedicated schools teams who visit schools and colleges and provide awareness and
prevention workshops directly face to face with students, getting information and advice directly to
those most affected by youth suicide.
Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland celebrated its 10 th anniversary in 2017 and in our now 12 years we
have never received any state funding. We are looking to develop new relationships with businesses
around the country that would like to support and fund our life saving programmes through 2020
and beyond through corporate sponsorship.
Over the last three years we have increased the numbers of students reached through our
programmes while reducing the cost of the programmes on per student basis. In terms of value for
money YSPI have exceeded our own internal targets every year so that our administration costs are
only 12% as of 1 st November 2019. This means that for every €1 we receive we are able to apply 88c
towards youth suicide awareness and prevention.
SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES 2020
Media Profile
We have a number of programmes that resonate very strongly with the public, and which would
provide our corporate supporters with very high visibility and association with a very positive social
message. The charity has a social media reach of around 48,000 with individual Facebook posts
achieving an organic reach of up to 22,000. We are in contact with every primary and secondary
school in the country twice a year as well as having good contacts with most Student Unions at third
level.
Facebook Profile
YSPI has been building our Facebook following over the last 11 years and we have now reached
51,000 fans with roughly 200 new fans added each week. 50% of our fans are aged 18-24 with a 3:1
female to male ratio.
Our fan base is very socially aware and socially active which provides us with a very responsive
volunteer infrastructure which is well spread across the country. Our Facebook demographics are
shown below:
Page 4

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES 2020
Facebook Reach
We do very well in terms of our organic reach with some posts gaining organic reach of up to 45,000
with accompanying boosts in reactions, comments and shares.
We spend around €5,000 per annum on targeted Facebook promotions highlighting our services,
events and awareness programmes. Our paid response rate is very high in proportion to our
advertising spend. This is mostly due to the public support for suicide prevention and in particular
youth suicide prevention. We get a very good response from parents of teenagers and from
university students and graduates.
Page 5

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES 2020
Sponsorship Opportunities
Each of our programmes would provide sponsors with a range of marketing and media opportunities.
The charity would be open to discussing more specific marketing proposals with potential sponsors
but some possibilities would include:

Hosting media launch
Co-branding on all materials distributed in each campaign
Sponsorship acknowledged by charity in all social media posts and online advertising
Sponsorship acknowledged by charity in all press interviews and press releases
Physical branding of premises, vehicles etc. with sponsor logo where appropriate
Sponsors’ advertising or marketing materials / support letter included in all packs
Sponsors’ advertising or marketing material included in all house to house distribution
The costs for each programme are based on costings for previous programmes and events of a similar
nature that we have undertaken. As a charity with an established volunteer base we are able to
distribute printed materials effectively, and at a fraction of the cost of conventional delivery services.
Special Sponsorship Opportunity for 2020
Mobile Youth Crisis Counselling Centre €150,000
Our special project this year is to raise €150,000 to create Ireland’s first mobile youth crisis
counselling centre.
When we visit schools and colleges one of the most
frequent concerns raised by teachers and
management is the availability of mental health
services for referral. Most teachers are not trained in
mental health awareness techniques and school
guidance counsellors are often overstretched
particularly around exam time which is a high risk
mental health period especially amongst Leaving Cert
students.
Our special project for 2020 has four steps so could be split across multiple sponsors:
Purchase an Mobile Event unit €65,000
We intend to purchase an events vehicle similar to the one in the photo. These are available for
around €65,000.
Convert it into a mobile crisis counselling centre €15,000
Most event vehicles are already suitable for counselling services but will need internal privacy
partitioning and sound-proofing. This is estimated at €15,000
Page 6

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES 2020
Staff it with trained crisis counsellors €50,000
Mostly we will be able to access volunteer counsellors and therapists in the local area where the
counselling centre travels to, but in urgent cases or emergencies then we will be able to staff the
vehicle with trained crisis counsellors. Staffing will be based on 12 month contracts with two full
time counsellors at €50,000 per annum.
Be a rapid response unit to provide fast support to teenagers at high risk of suicide €10,000
The counselling resource centre is mobile and so will be able to go to schools and colleges as part of
our Schools Programme to provide immediate on-site support. However the centre can also be
moved to support schools or local communities where there is a teenager in crisis very quickly. We
estimate that the running costs of the counselling centre will be around 0.42c per kilometre. Based
on our average travel for school visits this would be in the region of 24,000 kilometres per year, so
around €10,000.
Other Sponsorship Opportunities
Schools Programme Literature €10,000
This is the literature given out in each school in our Programme to students and teachers. In 2020
we will be working with around 140 secondary schools across the country and reaching 16-18,000
students directly. We will also be providing around 140 Teachers’ packs for each school.
Materials can be branded with sponsor’s logo and include a foreword or support letter. The materials
are given directly to students in the age range 16-21 being transition, 5 th and 6 th years as well as 1 st
and 2 nd year students in third level education.
20,000 Student Booklets
2,000 Teachers’ Handbooks
1,000 Teachers’ Resource Books
Schools & College Awareness Packs 2020 €9,800
Every August we send out Mental Health Awareness and Suicide Prevention packs to all 780
secondary schools and 130 third level colleges in the country for the start of the new academic year.
Materials can include a foreword or support letter. The
packaging, materials and posters can all be branded with
sponsor’s logo. The School and College Awareness packs are
dispatched in late August just before the new academic year.
Sponsors may wish to host the media launch.
780 School Information Packs
130 College Information Packs
40,000 Self-Harm & Suicide Booklets
5,000 Posters
SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES 2020
Students For Life Packs €22,000
Students against Suicide is our main third Level Campaign for 2018-19. Students against Suicide packs
will be sent to all 130 third level college Student Unions in the country. This campaign will have direct
access to approximately 150,000 students with very high social media interaction and conventional
media uptake.
All materials can be branded as well as the promotional materials for awareness events that we hold
on college and university campuses. Events
usually include giveaways such as stress balls,
wristbands, mouse mats etc. that can be
provided by sponsors for distribution.
130 Student Union Packs
100,000 Information Booklets
5,000 Posters
100,000 Leaflets
100,000 laminated cards
County based Information Campaigns
€8,000 per County
With appropriate sponsorship to cover printing costs the charity would be able to use its volunteer
network to distribute around 30,000 mental health awareness booklets to homes, business and
sports clubs in each county. This could be around 1,300,000 booklets printed and distributed
nationally during 2020.
All materials are printed on a county by county basis so can be branded with sponsor’s logos. This
may suit an organisation based in a particular county. Volunteer distributors wear high visibility
tabards for health & safety purposes. The tabards can provide a very visible brand platform.
30,000 information booklets distributed house to house on a county by county basis.
1.3 million Booklets distributed house to house nationally by local volunteers
Dublin Information Campaigns €20,000
With appropriate sponsorship to cover printing costs the charity would be able to use its volunteer
network in Dublin to distribute around 60,000 mental health awareness booklets to homes and sports
clubs in the Dublin Metropolitan Area.
All materials can be branded with sponsor’s logos. This may suit an organisation based in specifically
in Dublin. Volunteer distributors wear high visibility tabards for health & safety purposes. The
tabards can also provide a very visible brand platform.
60,000 information booklets distributed house to house by local volunteers.
SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES 2020
Mission Statement
"saving lives through education"
Our mission is focused on providing mental health awareness and suicide prevention programmes to
schools and colleges where our facilitators work directly with students to promote awareness,
provide skills and advice, and support teachers and staff as needed.
We provide a wide range of online resources including online training and youth self-harm and suicide
publications; we operate a FreeText service where people in need of crisis information can text our
information service free of charge.
Our Facilitators and volunteers also arrange and provide outreach events and awareness campaigns
around the country for parents, community organisations and voluntary groups. We also provide
services to youth organisations, youth diversion projects, clubs and sports organisations upon
request.
Why consider supporting youth suicide prevention?
During 2020 our facilitators will work, face to face, with over 12,500 secondary school students in
more than 70 schools around the country.
We are the only youth-orientated national suicide charity and we work just for young people up to
22 years of age. You can work with us to support our services and our young people by helping to
fund our dedicated Schools Facilitators who provide our Youth Mental Health Awareness and Suicide
Prevention programme for schools, colleges and other youth organisations.
If we can add Ireland’s first mobile youth crisis counselling centre to our services we will be able to
respond to crises in schools very quickly and provide immediate targeted mental health services.
As you can imagine providing suicide awareness and prevention information directly to young people
in a safe and supportive environment is critical to helping to reduce the frighteningly high rates of
youth suicide in Ireland. With your help we can increase the level of services that we are able to
provide and bring these vital services to more schools, colleges and youth organisations.
Through our awareness and prevention work all across the country we are able to provide resources
for young people, their friends, families, teachers, coaches and many more concerned people so that
they all have the vital information they need to detect the early signs of pre-suicidal behaviours and
help prevent more young deaths.
Schools Programme
YSPI developed the Four Steps to Help Programme for Schools with the assistance of Dr Keith Holmes,
a consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist, and Medical Director of St John of God’s Youth Mental
Health Services. We have spent the last two years completing the programme, which is now a
comprehensive mental health awareness and suicide prevention programme.
The programme includes:

A 24 page Student Booklet for each student attending a workshop
A Teachers’ Handbook which provides in depth information and risk assessments for teachers
and youth workers.
A set of 7 lesson plans which the schools can use to build on the programme workshops.
A Press and Media Pack which covers responsible reporting of suicide particularly youth
suicide which carries a higher risk of copycat suicides amongst peers.
A full script of the facilitators' prepared presentation with slides as reference
Access to local counselling resources
Autumn 2020
Access to educational assessments and psychometric evaluations
Autumn 2020
FreeText Crisis Information Service
Following feedback from the students themselves we set-up a FreeText Crisis Information Service in
2014. The FreeText service allows anyone, even if they have no credit, to text HELP to 50015 where
they will receive back a list of services that are available 24/7 and are also free to call. As of 31st
October 2018 we were receiving around 2,000 unique text requests per month on the FreeText
service.
New Developments for 2020
Our latest development of the programme is to create a studio quality video presentation of our
workshops which can be included into school packs for schools where they have an urgent
requirement for support, such as a suicide in the area affecting the students, where we simply don’t
have the resources to schedule a facilitator. We are working towards distributing over 300 of these
school packs this year although the pack costs are quite high.
Page 10

SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES 2020
Conclusion
We fully appreciate that times are still very tough economically for many, and especially for those of
you in the retail or service sectors. Our hope is, that through our Sponsorship Opportunities available
here, we are providing a value added marketing proposition where your organisation can be
associated with a very worthwhile cause, and promoted in a very positive way.
Even if these sponsorship opportunities are not what you are looking for in marketing terms, please
consider either an outright donation, or providing us with some of your products or services which
we can then use to fundraise through our volunteer network at events around the country.
The Trustees, staff and volunteers would be most grateful for any help and support you might be able
to offer us this year. There are so many worthwhile causes looking for support at the moment, it can
be very difficult to choose a particular charity over another, but we hope that you might choose Youth
Suicide Prevention Ireland.
For further information or to arrange a meeting to discuss sponsorship opportunities please contact
our administrator, Alan McKelvie, on 021 242 7174 or email alanm@yspi.ie.
Charity Information
Youth Suicide Prevention Ireland was founded in 2007 as there were no national charities focusing
specifically on the problems and issues of youth suicide and self-harm in Ireland.
We have never received a euro in state funding in all the time we have been working for the young
people of Ireland. All our funding comes from personal supporters and corporate sponsorship so we
understand the trust they put in us because we know if we don't live up to that trust there will be no
state agency there to bail us out. It costs us just 12c per €1 to run the charity so 88c or 88% of funds
we receive are available to fund lifesaving programmes like our Schools Programme and FreeText
Crisis service.
Our Board of Trustees are all volunteers and receive no salary or compensation of any kind for their
time and service. Our Trustees are entirely independent and they are not related to each other in any
way. Our Trustees do not have charity credit cards or any kind of direct access to charity funds but
they have total access 24/7 to the charity's financial records and books so they can assure themselves
that your donations are being spent properly.

Our Trustees, Chief Executive and administrators are not paid for their time or service.
The charity has no mortgages or major outstanding debts.
The charity always tries to keep cash reserves of 10% of annual income in case of emergencies.
The charity has only two staff, both are trained facilitators who provide the National School
Visits Programme around the country. They get paid around €25,000 per year each.
The charity also pays for a certified accountant to keep our accounts, and separate
independent auditors to check our accounts are complete and accurate.
Awareness Training Ireland
Awareness Training Ireland is the corporate training arm of Youth Suicide
Prevention Ireland. ATI has been at the cutting-edge of Mental Health
Awareness and Risk management training in schools and colleges for the
last 10 years. As a result our training is the perfect synergy of the practical
and the theoretical to help you achieve your real-world training goals. Our
training leads to an increase in staff well-being as well as improved risk
management with reduced risk liability.
With the increase in mental health related liability claims in the last three years, our focus is on
improving the understanding of Mental Health Risks to yourself, your employees and your company.
With our training we enable you to assess the risks arising from mental health issues, develop and
maintain appropriate policies, and provide effective prevention and intervention. Developing a
robust mental health strategy for your organisation can significantly reduce liability exposure and
reduce absenteeism and sick leave.
The same trained facilitators who work in schools and colleges around the country every week are
the facilitators for our courses. They bring a wealth of knowledge, experience and practical skills to
our courses. Our facilitators work as easily with corporate personnel as with teachers, parents and
youth workers.
What is mental health risk?
Awareness of mental health is not only good for your employee well-being but helps to manage and
mitigate liability from mental health risk.
Our experience is that many organisations have underestimated the importance of mental health,
not just in terms of staff welfare but also in terms of duty of care.
We put a particular focus on understanding the causes of mental health issues on a corporate and
personal level. We provide comprehensive training in assessing the risk factors involved in order that
those risk factors can be identified early, mitigated and preventative measures taken before a
concern becomes a crisis.
